One step at a time

The road to AFL football has been a rocky one for Sam Docherty. A dominant force for the Gippsland Power in his TAC Cup days, Docherty’s selection at pick 12 by the Lions in 2011 caught few by surprise. A dashing half-backman with a devastating right boot, his potential was unquestioned.

However an extended recovery from off-season hip surgery kept the young Lion out of action throughout the early stages of his maiden season, returning to full fitness late in the year to become a crucial cog in the Lions reserves’ 2012 premiership.

A fresh and above all fit Docherty returned in 2013 determined to make his mark on the AFL, and it took him only a handful of reserves games to earn a spot in the seniors. Months of hard work were rewarded as 19 year old Sam Docherty made his AFL debut in the round four match against North Melbourne.

“It was a bit of a blur,” Docherty recalled. “You can’t really plan for what it’s going to be like. It was pretty tough at first getting used to the intensity, but further through the game it got a bit easier.” His debut was worth the wait, as a 20 disposal match off half back gave a clear indication of Docherty’s talent.

A back injury suffered in the loss to Hawthorn has seen him return to the physio’s bench, but Docherty refuses to let another blow keep him down. “I just jammed up in a tackle last week, and it was a bit sore during the week but if I can get through training and some contact stuff then I should be right to play on the weekend,” Docherty said. You could forgive Docherty for feeling a little hard done by as he is sidelined by yet another injury, but his is a refreshingly positive outlook, and one that demonstrates his resilience when faced with adversity. “It’s frustrating, but it’s kind of good in a way to get a bit of a rest. It was good just to play a few games in a row.”

Big fan of the Doc, looking forward to him playing another extended run of games to finish out the year, with another preseason under his belt i think that he will be very hard to dislodge from the team.

I have heard that like karnesis & to a lesser degree polec, that the doc is out of contract & homesick ... is their any indication that he won't sign a new contract.

I heard from a reliable source that he has already enrolled his kids at a reputable Melbourne school.

I heard his dog has been linked to pet groomers in Fremantle. And he wants to move closer to his Grandma, who lives in <location offering the most money>.

Had a bit of a shocker against Port. Throughout the year I think he has been fairly solid. He looks comfortable executing Voss' quick handball out of traffic handball game plan, but has not had the elite kicking that his reputation suggested. Perhaps the former has affected the latter, because he seems to instinctively look for the one-two and then kicking becomes a bit of an afterthought. To my eye he needs to avoid rushing himself and just balance himself a bit better. All part of adjusting to the pace of the game at the top level I suppose. Unfortunately the few games he missed added a bit of rust, because he looked out of sorts.

I think that comes down to his inexperience. When he has been stringing games together he has been more composed than when he comes straight into the side. The more AFL games he plays the more comfortable he will get.

Is there any articles or media print about his elite kicking? All I remember about his kicking was that he could absolutely roost them and early vision of him reminded me of a Harry O'Brien type kicker, can kick the skin off of them but doesn't really pinpoint a long player à la Rich.

Looking back at the articles in the first few posts they do say kicking is his strength. They do also compare him to Adcock so it's a bit confusing.

I was under the impression prior to us drafting him that he was someone with an elite kick. Still waiting to see why he was a first round draft pick. Still very early days but I thought we would have seen a bit more by now.

I would like to see him put on a couple more kilos especially across the shoulders and arms. We do have a young team and there is a focus on the running game because of the introduction of the rotation cap but at times our players look like boys playing against men.
