Player Watch Sam McLarty (Delisted 2018)

Technically, hes contracted (until B sample comes through). We may not even have the cap room.

Maybe we redraft MclLarty as a rookie during the season after Murray finally gets the boot. It would be nice to think that we have promised him that (subject to some requirements)

This one has me scratching my head a little bit. I noted some months ago that his impaired hearing seemed to be an issue in communications between him and the bench, him and teammates etc., so part of me wonders if this is the heart of the problem.

Last year he played a solid season as a strong defender. He didn't show a lot of defensive intuition, but he was strong in the air and read the play very well. He also showed some decent dash. This year we put him through the ruck and up forward, and he looked somewhat lost. Now he's delisted with no hint of a rookie spot. Just not sure about this call at all.

Club should be transparent on this.

As a fan I'm gobsmacked to be honest.

Would love to hear an explanation as to why.

You dont cut 20 year old KPP's when we lack so much depth in this area and VFL watchers know he showed promise particularly in defence.

Everybody loves a feel good story. Sam making it would’ve been awesome.
But, being deaf, vision impaired, having fingers missing or being type 1 diabetic is too tough in an endurance sport which is 360^ (ie in rugby, the game is in front of you).
Sam may have been a good junior footballer because his physical attributes allowed it. In senior AFL, he fell back into the pack and his handicap probably held him back. Although he did wear his cochlear implant during the game, there would have had to have been some trepidation about getting his head smashed and the implant damaged.
IMO, I would stay clear of all players that are physically limited. I know Jaydn Stephenson flies in the face of that logic... but simple medication makes him pretty much normal (different to a bionic ear)... and it’s only one year into Stephendon’s career (let’s keep our fingers crossed).

Disappointing. What did we have to lose by giving him an extra year to prove himself?

I doubt it will be a decision that hurts us in the long term but being this ruthless in cutting 2nd year KPPs who have shown decent VFL firm seems shortsighted

Guess Kelly Coming in the Draft

Its none of your business.

I'm sure McLarty has had everything explained in his exit interview.

While I didn't rate McLarty has high as others (even as a defender) I still would have given him another year. It was surprising how little we played him deep at either end in 2018 and it always looked like he needed a bit more fitness and strength associated with more pre-seasons. After listening to his interview the club put out mid-year where he spoke about others debuting and wanting his turn it's disappointing that he won't get that chance with us.

I would be more wary of making blanket statements like that. Serves no purpose. As Stephenson shows, a judgement should be made on the merits of each case.

I saw plenty of games and didn't see anything.

It’s a curious decision, but one I am sure the club is convinced that he is not going to make it at AFL level. The club would have kept him on as a rookie if they believe there was a remote chance of him making at AFL level.

It’s a brutal reality but that’s how it goes sometimes. Maybe he goes back to VFL club and develops over the next 2-3 years. Plenty of players done this and got back onto an AFL list.

Good luck to him

I perfectly understood why he didn't debut in 2018, not least because he didn't seem especially fit (I noticed he was rotated quite a bit, or left deep forward). I think he was named as an emergency a few times, but he never seriously seemed on the verge of selection.

But yep, another pre-season and another season --and a more settled position-- might have revealed something different.

He can't hear.

He can't hear his teammates or the umpire with 1000 at Victoria Park, he'll be completely deaf with 90k at the MCG. Too big a liability.

Truly bizarre to spend such a high draft pick on him, big mistake.
