Sam Naismith
An ACL rupture and a long list of complications wiped out Sam Naismith’s 2018 and 2019 seasons, fuelling the hunger of the chief Sydney Swans ruckman for a comeback 2020 campaign. The QBE Sydney Swans Academy product is an excellent tap ruckman who’s shown promising glimpses since being drafted in November 2012, particularly as Sydney powered towards the 2016 Grand Final. The New South Welshman had always worn the number 35 before switching to the number 10 for season 2020 in search of a fresh start.

Sam Naismith
DOB: 16 July 1992
DEBUT: 2014
DRAFT: #Undefined, 2015 Rookie Elevation
RECRUITED FROM: North Shore (NSW)

Really can't se why he is still on our list.
OK so Darcy Cameron is the no 1 ruck at the Pies. Even they thought Grundy was the future.
30 games at 30. I get that ruckman take longer to mature but at 30 I'd expect at least 12 years' experience. 30 games = 1.5 years or for Naismith or better still 1 game of experience 30 times.
Gotta go IMO.

Why keep Nankervis or Cameron when you can have this guy lumbering around clunking 0.5 contested marks a game during the ~15% of the games he is actually fit to play?

Delist.

His movement in numbers on his back is higher than his disposal count in the last 5 years

Well that's 100% hindsight and hindsight only.

Nank left when he was 4th in line which includes Cray. Honestly I wish Swans fans would shut the **** up about Nank, he was extremely average during the Richmond dynasty years and has only recently started playing like a top 10 ruck. By the time we got good we had picked up Ruck Jesus. Also it was 6 years ago for **** sake

Cameron never really got a run with us before he left, but at the time there was no reason to expect Naismith would go full Alex Johnson in his recovery. He was also roughly 4th in line for both Key Forward and Ruckman going into 2019 so much like Melican now, it didn't really matter at the time that he left cos the depth was there. Another very important detail is that he didn't break out for Collingwood until this year when he was 29. Before this season he was still just a bang average ruck/forward who would've been delisted by us 3 seasons ago. That's not even mentioning that Hickey isn't good with a secondary ruck that isn't a primary KPF like Reid so Cameron would've been wasted like Ladhams has been this year.

Naismith's ruck craft has always been his main draw, not his ability around the ground. Take that guy out of stoppages and he's limited but there's definitely a lot of value to be had with that, look at Nic Nat's recent history for a prime example. Obviously the club thought so too as we basically waited 3 years before deciding we had to actually replace him instead of biding our time and getting Sinclair to fill in.

Seems like a great team man. But ultimately his injuries have ruined his career, although I suspect the game has moved on from his style of play as well. I wonder whether he will keep playing in the hope of getting picked up?

Did McAndrew show anything at all in the vfl?
I was disappointed with his general skill development and durability, having been injured for chunks of the season. Having said that, 2022 was his first full year so he needs to make some big strides in 2023. I understand he's a late convert but there comes a time where you need to show you are up to the standard, especially in terms of basic AFL skills (kicking, hand passing and marking) and fitness (durability and ability to run out a game as the main ruck).

Off to WAFL
The West Australian can reveal Naismith’s management has called several clubs in the WAFL on Monday as he looks to continue his career.
It is believed Naismith has a connection to WA through his partner Ally Barrass, the sister of West Coast defender Tom.
Naismith has expressed his desire to continue his career at the AFL level, with the ruckman fit to play again despite not suiting up at all in 2022.

Delisted Sydney ruckman Sam Naismith is hoping to receive an AFL lifeline in 2023.

While Naismith is hopeful, he understands he’ll have to wait until this month’s drafts are complete to learn if there’s any landing spot available for him.
“There’s been a bit of talk,” Naismith told SEN WA Breakfast.
“But at the end of the day, by the time I was cut by Sydney, clubs had pretty much organised their lists.
“They’re just looking to see what happens after the draft and then rookie draft and whatnot.

“Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to go from my position on the Swans’ list back onto their rookie list because I was inactive for a little while.”

Naismith says if he’s not immediately picked up, his plan is to return to state-league football and make his way back to the top level through the mid-season draft.
While Naismith hails from New South Wales, he has significant connections out west with his partner the sister of West Coast defender Tom Barrass.
When asked whether he’d consider an opportunity to join the Eagles’ WAFL program with hopes of joining the senior list mid-season, Naismith said he is “more than happy” to go down that path with any club.
“It’s good enough to talk about it that way,” Naismith said.

“If a club wants to do that, I’m more than happy to go down that path, but an opportunity has to be there.”

Naismith last played senior football in Round 4 of the 2020 season.
