If I just read the wrap up right on the AFL website, Sam Sheldon just went to the bears.

This means that the son of one of our legends is going to be playing against us.

I couldnt find anything about Jake and Tomi. Are they still available now or did they get picked up by another club?

Jake and Tommi are still available for the rookie draft or PSD. I'd say Kenny as a Saints employee didn't feel any loyalty to the Blues and encouraged Sammy to take his chances where he found them.

The Lions had told Sammy he would be taken by them if everyone else passed on him.

Good luck to him-he was obviously rated higher by the Lions than he was by us. No big loss-remember the last F/S possibility we passed on? That didn't turn out well, did it? I have full confidence in the recruiting staff, and if they chose to overlook Sam, so be it-I'm very happy with our selections.

Tomi and Jake are still available. I doubt we will take either in the PSD, but one or both of them may find themselves being rookied.

good luck to sam

still a good decision by carlton, 15 other clubs did not pick sam in the 3rd round of the draft and all 16 passed on him in the 4th round as well

he may be a good player but with the info at hand and the circumstances it was a sound decision by carlton.

I agree... good luck to him.

I am just a little pissed that he didnt take the advice given to him about nominating next year when he would have had another year in the TAC and he would have been definitely picked up by the blues as a F/S pick

I dont think that Ken was being disloyal ODN, but he would have advised Sam to do what he thought best. I dont think that a father would really advise a son to do the wrong thing.

It all just seems very silly by Sam. There is NO way he will play seniors for Brisbane this year, so he will effectively start playing AFL from 2008 onwards, and even that isn't a guarrantee.

He was guarranteed a spot on our list for 2008 and beyond. It really was a silly choice, as he wouldn't have missed any chance of playing AFL if he opted to be taken by us next year.

Anyway, good luck to him. For all we know, he could turn out to be just like the last kid we chose to overlook that was taken by another club.

Why is it silly? He's even less of a chance of playing seniors in 2007 if he isn't on a list. Now he gets to train with an AFL club and progress his development a year earlier.

It just seems silly because he won't get to play AFL until 2008, when he was guarranteed the opportunity to do so by us.

I agree, the experience is invaluable, but I'm sure Sam would have been invited by the CFC to train and mingle around the club next year before his selection.

As I have said, all the best to him-I hope he suceeds, but it is just strange that he chose what he did. Good luck :thumbsu:

 He wouldn't have played until 2008 with your mob either.

Yes, but he would have been with his real family instead of the adopted family your team is going to try and make for him...

Bet he gets homesick in 2 years time :D

That's exactly my point!

At the end of the day, he was guarranteed a spot with us, but chose to try his luck.

Either way, he will play in 2008 at the earliest, so I don't know how much he would have gained.

OK. At least that is a valid reason. But the fact that he nominated for the draft instead of staying home with mum, tells me he is less likely to get homesick than others.

Not at all. It just shows he has confidence. We have no idea whether he adapts well, or if he becomes homesick. Only time will tell.

The Lions said that they would take him if no one else did, so he was assured of getting picked up. But I don't know if that was before or after he chose to nominate for the draft.

I think it was after. Therefore it was a pretty big gamble by Sam, especially seeing as though we had already notified him that he was guarranteed a spot on our list from 2008.

I think it was after.

I suspected you might say that:D

It's quite possible that the reason he nominated for the draft was because he knew someone would take him.

I'm pretty sure that the reason he nominated was that he wanted to get into it straight away. Clubs may have spoken to him, but I doubt he was assured he would be picked up by anyone.

 Your story changes pretty quickly.

Why? I'm just saying that I think he was told after he was nominated that he was being closely looked at. A few clubs were interested in him apparently, including Carlton, so that eliminates the possibility of nominating in order to get away from the Blues.

You have no way of knowing that. You're just saying that to suit your "he was silly" argument.

Anyway, the fact is he was drafted, so I find it hard to fathom your criticism of him to nominate. For all he knows the Blues may have changed their mind next year.

I'm not saying I know it-on the contrary, I have no idea. I'm not saying it just to suit my argument at all, but then again, neither of us know what really went on.

And just to make it clear, I am not criticising him at all. I wish him the best of luck at the Lions, and I would never do anything less. I am just saying that he took a big gamble. Luckily for him, it has so far paid off, and I hope for his sake that it continues this way.
