Player Watch Sam Swadling

The club has needed a young player with a high possession rate has been needed for sometime. Combined with the other traits is brilliant. A good half in his first game is another bonus. Going to be a good watch.
Seems a natural midfielder from day 1 (compared to tweeners like Allan or converted flankers like HDM).

Swadling probably goes past Allen on a wing. Ed’s job is to prove he can replace one of the mids through the middle of the ground.

I reckon Swadling needs a block of 6-8 weeks to adjust to VFL level and how we want to play. He still gets caught too often but I like his ability to accumulate and think with some time he’ll sort that out.

Big future for us I reckon.

Agreed. Ed to move into the middle

I like Swadling but gone past ED, please, on the wing or not. Gone past Ned, yeah probably!

Swadling like Saxena, McCarthy, Prindeble are just young men with zero strength or ability to impact the contest....Saxena ran up to Alir and he swatted him off like a fly....

All have potential, swaddling is a ball magnet, it's going to be great to watch him develop but it will take time.

How is it outrageous to suggest he's gone past a fellow VFL player but not someone who is a fixture in our AFL team?

Well Swaddling already is able to kick with more consistency on his none preferred leg than Ned will every be able to on his preferred kicking leg.

I think if we get towards the end of the season and were out of finals contention, we play swadling along with the others to hopefully get a few more senior games into each of them. (Hayes, West, Cochran etc). But otherwise can't see swadders debuting this year. Looks promising though

Now that it is a final 10 not 8 I can't see us being out of finals contention.

Carlton on the other hand...Lol

There are a few other things that Ned does that you consistently refuse to acknowledge

Swadling played well on Friday, but wasnt good or prolific enough to be considered for senior selection.

Needs a block of 8 to 10 games in the VFL. Can't see a debut in the first half of the year.
Weve got very little depth. A couple of good games and a couple of injuries and any of them are a chance.

I personally think he will come in to take sidebottom's spot when ever steele is ready for a break during the season.

Not to mention that Allan is a worse kick than Long and without any of the positive ball winning and competitive traits that Long has. I think it was JOELY that touched on it following the GWS community match that Allan loves a moonball.

FWIW I’m someone that would like to see us move past Long by this time next year so I’m all for Swadling getting opportunities ahead of those two if the club feel it’s warranted.

His size, his ability to use both sides and the way he runs effortlessly shows that his ceiling could be very high.

He could grow into the big brutish midielder with class that we so desperately need.
doesn't look it to me, looks more outside accumulator

I’m not comparing them in the sense that I think Swadling can be this good, but in terms of the player I’d like to see him be as an accumulator I’d think more the McCluggage/ Sidebottom as opposed to developing as a big inside type. Steele’s a great runner over distance, but isn’t blessed with power in the contest and I’d say the same for McCluggage both though are great in traffic because they know their escape routes and are clean.

The key for me though is nailing a wing/ HB/ HF role in 26/27 in order to get the 20-30 games under his belt before we need midfield reinforcements. We never introduce kids as midfielders, not even Nick did it, so he needs to be able to pay his dues in a secondary role before coming in.

Like how he goes about it and Gets lot of the Ball

Just has to work on Consistency of his Disposal as he can use Ball Well but also has some Shockers as well
