Tidy with gloves, young, a cool temperament, and consistent with the bat.

Really excited for him - is he a chance to replace Haddin ahead of Paine?

The best thing about Whiteman is that he has, like you say, a cool temperament. Makes runs when required. I definitely see him as the next long term Test keeper.

Long term is the key word there.

Lets give him another few years in Shield before considering him. Haddin should have another 2 summers left in him so hopefully that gives Whiteman some development time.

Cant see Haddin sticking around for two more years - wasn't he on the verge at the end of the Ashes? Playing in all 3 formats is a tough ask for him too.

I feel there needs to be a Phil Hughes like investment in Whiteman - put it all on red

Yeah cause that worked out so well last time.

Just because you are performing at Shield doesn't mean you are going to in international cricket. He hasn't even scored a FC hundred FFS and averages 35. He had a decent year last season but lets not get ahead of ourselves.

He's a wicketkeeper.

35 is perfectly acceptable for a keeper.

Gilly's FC average was less when he first played for Australia, and he was older - get him in there as early as possible I say

I hope you're not using Phil Hughes as an example of CA showing confidence in talented young cricketer and persisting with him during form lapses.

That's what I said - put it on red and hope it comes off. Didn't work with Hughes, has worked with others (eg: Warner playing for Aus with next to no first class matches to his name, Maxwell) - lets see what happens

Except they dumped Hughes as soon as they could

never seen him but going on stats he needs to score more runs. Ave of 35 in first class with ZERO centuries is not good enough. Average of 23 in one dayers so you cant even ease him into ODI's as his form isnt good enough.

Only 22 years old so nothing wrong with playing him in domestic cricket for another 2-3 years and see how he develops.

Edit: also saw that he was born in england, so needs to ave 50 before we let one of their own in our aussie test team.

If Haddin was to retire from tests within the next 18 months then I'd bring in Hartley for a short while before Whiteman. Anything longer than Whiteman is the direct replacement.

They'll never pick Hartley and a lot can happen in 18+ months but that would be my development plan for the keeper role if I had sole direction of the test team.

Grew up in Bunbury. He's as Australian as Symonds.

People quoting his average and centuries as reasons why not to probably haven't seen him much, if at all. He's comfortably the best keeper/bat talent in the country, no real weaknesses as a bat (except his conversion rate, which will come in time) and is probably the second best gloveman in the country behind Hartley. He'll be a ****ing gun at test level.

Which would be why people are saying wait a couple of years to see if this does improve. Play him in next 12 months and more than likely wont handle the pressure.

So who else do we pick?

Haddin will last out until the 2015 Ashes.

If Whiteman continues his progress next shield season then we should bring him in- even if he is only 23. There is no point picking an inferior candidate (or an exactly the same candidate) just because Whiteman is 23.

His performances thus mean that since Hartley isn't in contention, Whiteman should already be the back up.

Nowhere hopefully. Absolute ******** and overrated hack

What wrong with Paine? Did he go through your little sister or something?

So he stuck it up to fat man Maguire - give the man a fu*king gold medal I say.

I thought he hung around like a bad smell for way too long
wasn't it something like 3 tests after he got his 2 hundreds against the saffas he was dropped?

in saying that, it was brutally obvious he had been worked out

Pretty sure his inept technique got bastings from the likes of Harmlesson and Chris Martin before they realised the situation was more hopeless than Gallipoli

Other than the fact that he publically accused a club of cheating with no evidence? Maybe the fact that from what I've heard around the state scene (I know two players who are currently contracted with a state) he's a bit of a selfish prick.
