But Whiteman's mid first class average of 35 is hardly an argument against him.

True, and as I stated in an earlier post Nevill is leading (discounting Wade) at ~37. No keeper is killing it with the bat but the one that does will get the nod ahead of superior glove-work.

Whiteman is a better bat than Nevill, and a better gloveman

Would be happy for either Nevill or Whiteman to take over from Haddin, good form between now and Haddin's depature and I think Whiteman would get the nod. He is one of the best young talents we have in my opinion, remember watching him keep in a Shield match when Hughes and Klinger had a partnership of what would've been close to 300 and he seemed to have a really good attitude and set the tone for other fielders, this should happen at FC level but still you would be surprised how often it doesn't. Pretty good keeping depth in general actually i'd say Hartley and Paine wouldn't disappoint either if selected.

Can't agree with that. If you said "has the potential" to be a better bat and a better gloveman than Nevill I'd agree but he isn't at the moment.

Isn't it great how the first thing people argue against a future keeper with is his batting stats.

There isn't exactly an easily definable statistic in keeping that says you are good or bad like their is batting. Catches mean nothing as all it means is your bowlers are proving you chances, doesn't say how many you drop.

He's definitely a better gloveman right now. I'd only have him behind Hartley as a gloveman. I also think he's a very good bat as well.

Disagree. It's much of a muchness arguing over an average comparison between 36 or 38.

Particularly as most people probably don't actually see any Shield cricket, and just go by stats, word of mouth and written reports.

I've seen Whiteman bat and keep but only on Shield streams and Sky. Good footwork, moves to position very well. You could see that in the BBL how he moves behind the stumps. He'll only improve.

He's got good footwork when batting too. I'm sure the previous selection board really fancied him as the next Aus keeper, don't know about this one though.

One of the big problems for me with expecting a keeper to bat long and average highly is the amount of time they are expected to concentrate during test matches. It has to be counter-productive to really top-quality keeping.

the other aspect is that the matches clash so i don't see how a big nsw or vic fan could claim to have a solid base to rate whiteman on
WA's 1st session is eastern state's 3rd session

Keeping an eye on scores to see who is batting/bowling a spell in other games really helps, but I don't always do it when I'm accessing Shield streams. I wish I'd seen Slapsy's monster chunk of that Vic innings.

He's a promising young keeper with alot of talent. He has had a few chances to make a hundred or two. Just hasn't taken his opportunity.
Highest score of 96. Has good temperament and good footwork.

Hopefully he can continue to develop :thumbsu:

A West Aussie former keeper at the helm - hopefully good news for Whiteman

He's made 50's with the team in dire straits, pretty sure there has been at least a few occasions he's had to bat with the tail and hit out
