SANFL Crows Player Reviews

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Given that the Crows site doesn't appear to put reviews of Crows in the SANFL up anymore and whenm they do it's a week late, surely we have posters who have witnessed SANFL games who can give us some reviews?

How did Watts go, Van Berlo, Maric in his first game....

Being an interstater it's like being in a vacume at present :(

I only saw North vs South, but from what I've heard...

Watts had a reasonable game. Took some nice marks and finished with 2 goals.

Knights played a great game, really showing his talent despite his tender age. Kicking was off (1.3) but was a huge positive.

Meesen played in the reserves, apparently played a solid game and managed to get in the best players.

Van Berlo played a good team game. Not a blinder, but got a bit of the ball and made the best players. His kicking was off as well though.

Scott Stevens did quite well, kicked 4 goals but I don't see him being picked nonetheless.

Nye played a super game. Got the ball plenty of times, used it as well as always and is in line for the League debut. Love watching this kid.

Hinge kicked a goal but didn't make the best players. I haven't seen him once this year, so some details on his last few games would be nice.

Gibbs kicked a goal but had a quiet game from all accounts. Nonetheless, he's doing pretty well given he's only 16.

Schuback didn't make the best players and only got a goal, and this is reserves I'm talking about. Plenty of question marks right now.

Maric apparently played well in the ruck, didn't see the game but I've heard good things. Struggled a bit up forward however (where the Crows want him to be - good decision IMO).

Hope I haven't missed anyone...

Just in case, Adam Fisher once again made the top 3 best players and picked up 25+ possessions. Reminds me a lot of Sam Mitchell.

John cahill spoke very well of scott stevens the other day. Dont reckon he is the future though, especially if he hasnt put weight on. Hes a bit like massie, in that NC doesnt rate him and he probably wont get the chance to show what hes got.

Jerome (along with others) on ATCF does a preview/review every week.

Noticed young Knights had a very good game & Nye was given best player for NA reserves.
So Jerome is not going to post on BF anymore :( - disaapointing

He appears to be very consistent ATM which is very encouraging in his second year.

For a kid with no PS to play as well as he has is very very encouraging

All are getting good wraps - some good talent coming through to replace Skippy and Shirley ;)

Think playing reserves for SANFL in his 3rd 0r 4th year? says it all - GONE!

Maric apparently played well in the ruck, didn't see the game but I've heard good things. Struggled a bit up forward however (where the Crows want him to be - good decision IMO).

Again good vibes coming out about the lad

Thanks for the feedback - really appreciated ;)

Now i didn't say that WW.
No but the fact he has been posting the SANFL league and reserves player placements on a Friday on BF and didn't this week - but did on ATCF - says what

Draw your own conclusions ;)

The fact Iam conversing with you shows how quiet this board is at present - like being in a jail cell and only having a mental patient to talk to :o :p

No-no no no.
That's no how you make porridge.

Watts had a reasonable game. Took some nice marks and finished with 2 goals.
Getting close to AFL selection. His ability to mark the ball and score goals better than most was fully evident in a near BOG performance.

Knights played a great game, really showing his talent despite his tender age. Kicking was off (1.3) but was a huge positive.
Knights too is on the verge of selection to the big stage. Almost BOG and had four scoring shots.

Meesen played in the reserves, apparently played a solid game and managed to get in the best players.
Injury has meant that Meesen played in reserves this week, but a near BOG performance will see a call up to main team next week. A repeat of this performance in the league side should put him in contention for a call up to the Crows.

Now go back and do it properly. :D

Sounds more accurate. Didn't get to see the Eagles vs Norwood game, but its good to see Watts did better than I heard.

Knights is indeed in contention for a Crows debut in the near future, especially if we begin to struggle. Two out of three 20+ possession games in the League at 19 years of age is a fine achievement and cannot be ignored. The Count would also be in contention - has been SUPER consistent.

Meesen, yes he is a little injured and did VERY well considering, but I wouldn't say he's in line for an AFL debut just yet.

What type of injury?

Add my little bit:

Scott Stevens - Played very well, as he has all year. Had an excellent first half with 3 goals and 4-5 strong contested marks in the second quarter. Slowed down after half time but ended with 4 goals and 9 marks and was one of the best players. Has been in excellent form this year....he deserves another go at AFL level. Hasnt put a foot wrong for the pies this year.

Maric - Very shaky in the first half. Got caught in dreamland 2-3 times in the first half thinking he had too much time to dispose of the ball so he was either holding the ball or scuffed some kicks. His ruckwork all match was excellent and he had some really inventive taps which found teammates. Jack and his teammates gave him some words of encouragement at 1/4 time and 3/4 time and said well done and keep working and in the second half his around the ground game improved a lot, taking some nice marks dropping across half back. Didnt spent any time up forward really.
Pretty good first game and a good base to work on.

From yesterdays game between Glenelg and Centrals

Josh Krueger - an ordinary game from krueger. He took 4 uncontested marks and most probably had about 7 possessions. Played full forward and centre half forward for the first two and bit quarters but didnt manage a score. He became frustrated and then was moved to centre half back for the remainder of the game.

John Hinge - I thought Hinge played a terrific game in the reserves. In my oppinnion he was one of Glenelgs best. I was surprised he wasnt in their best players. Played in the middle and had heaps of the ball.

Jacob Shuback - An excellent first half from him, he played in the midfield most of the game as well. He was a bit quieter in the second half but i thought in general he played well and like hinge I thought he was one of Glenelgs best. His disposal was very good.

Jonathan Griffen - a very quiet game by Griffen. He started at full forward and then rotated between ruck and the bench for the remainder of the game. He had a good patch in the third quarter but apart from that didnt get much of the ball. One thing i did notice was his skills. He has a beautiful kick on him and kicks it a mile. He is definately worth perservering with.

Rowan Andrews- very quiet game. I would be amazed if he is on our list at the end of the year.

Matthew Bode - was okay, nothing special though. Still had 20 odd possessions but wasnt dominant.

* Bryce Gibbs - another good game from Gibbs. Played on the wing and half forward. His first quarter was excellent, he kicked a goal and was getting plenty of the ball. He was a bit quieter after quarter time but once again i thought he played well. An extremely composed player.

I havent left I just havent gotten around to posting here yet. here is my review of yesterdays game at the Bay.

Bays V Centrals

It has to be said that in the both the ressies and seniors tha bays had it all over the dogs. yes the Dogs have had a few byes and have some players out injured, and the Bays flooded a fair bit but full marks to Glenelg.

Thy outworked the CDFC all day. they moved the ball quickly and ran hard from defence straight down the ground in both games.

Snout hitting the post was funny and it was good to be with the Louts.

Player reviews...

RESERVES
Krueger. Absolute Crap. Started at FF and took a mark in the first quarter and then hardly got near it. He was moving alright but well held. He didnt take too many marks or kick a goal. He had to run up to the wing to get a touch before he was moved to defence and did nothing. Bays fans inform me that last year he had a crap game and then lifted to play a number of good games. Lets hope he can lift next week. Jimmy Fantasia wouldnt have been thrilled with what he saw.

Schuback. Tigers named him as the fourth best player for the 2's. Started at half forward and moved into the middle and kicked two goals and gave the centrals boys a bit of stick. Got some good touches.

John Hinge. Tigers named him the best player in the 2's . Started on ball and then played at half back for 3/4ers. had a stack of the ball and provided plenty of run. Neat kick.Kicked the first goal for the match and took a some tough mark in the second. good game.

Griffen. Played between full forward and ruck. Had an ordinary day. his possies around the ground were'nt good and he could not get near it up forward. bays defenders were always in front. CDFC was keen for him to play well at FF in the second term and he failed. Came up against Herbert in the ruck and easily outjumped and out tapped him. His tap work was excellent. His form in the ressies as been solid, the senior ruckman had a shocker today...a call up to the one's may not be far off despite an average showing today.

SENIORS

Gibbs. Quite good, fantatstic long kick, kicked a geat goal. Hard at it player with a good build.

Bode.Solid effort. Plenty of run, terrible kick. He stopped kicking and just gave out handballs for most of the match.

Andrews. Played on and off the bench and coach Simmons said at the presentations that he was very happy with RA's work in the ruck today.

Coach Simmons is a clown. he starts his speech in the GFC clubrooms tonight saying "we cant get too carried away".

Near the end he metions the GFC function on tonight - The Miss Tiger awards. Players dressing up as shelias. he then states that the Miss Tiger Award has been won by Central District Football Club.

Some of the Louts thought it was an ordinary comment and quietly said he was being a bad sport (correct), some other Tigers cheered which was handy as he probably couldnt hear me telling him to go and get ********ed.

Good to hear that Maric, Nye, Stevens and Knights played well. Meeson was mentioned in in todays players in Norwood's best.

I saw Knights play and I liked what I saw. 30 possies in his 3rd game. Was excellent, and he continues to find the ball at will. He is just one of those players who always positions himself in the right area to get the ball either by link or from a spillage. Very Mattner like as well but more polished. Really really excited about this kid.

Everytime I see Nye in the paper he is the best for Nth ressies. SURELY he will get a league game this week after they swing the axe.

Gibbs got a bit of the ball and kicked a goal, 17 touches according to paper which is awesome for a 16yo. Has been consistent and will still have another year to cement himself at SANFL level in 2006. Hope he carves it in 2006 and has us drooling all the more. Blokes like himself and Gibbs are our future. Throw in a few more good draft picks, Nye and we should be looking good.

His stats don't look all that great. 5 kicks, 2 handballs, 4 marks. But he did score with every kick (2.3) so I guess it could have been a good game had he kicked more accurately.

Bode played well for Glenelg got lots of ball not to far away from Crows team and saw Hinge play reserves hard to judge form in the reserves but is going to be a big unit

Jerome, can you give some more info on Krueger after seeing him. Is he physically filled out pretty well or is he a beam pole ? Does he actually move ok and LOOK like a footballer ? What is the story with him ?

Can someone tell me why Watts didn't get more of the ball ? Did he not move to the correct positions to demand the ball ? Just trying to assess whether he had limited opportunities for few stats, whether he lacks the nous to be a key forward or perhaps he was benched for a lot of the day?

Any info would be good !

I've been to most of the glenelg games this year and seen Krueger play. The last two weeks he has moved around really well and looked reasonable fit. He seems to be physically okay but he has definately lacked match play. The last two weeks he has struggled to find the ball which resulted in last week him getting frustrated and ending up at centre half back. He still is crashing packs when he goes for marks but unfortunately not taking many marks himself. Personally i would like to seem him have a run in the ruck where he would have more freedom to roam around the ground. He just needs to play consecutive games and hopefully the confidence will return.

I think Crowman has summed it up pretty well. I thought he moved very well and he's got a solid build but his timing was shocking. He just could'nt get to the ball, he always seemed to get to the marking contests a few seconds late in a Rhett Biglands sort of way.
