Round 17

Saturday 24 July 2010

Glenelg v North @ Gliderol Stadium- ABC-TV
Can you believe this!! No, not the Phil Davis selection controversy. Matt Wright has been named on the ball for tomorrow's clash with Glenelg. Let's hope he can spend a good portion of the game in the clearances with Archard and Allan. A 25-30 quality disposal game would be ideal. After making way for Nathan Bock, Round 16 NAB Rising Star winner, Phil Davis has been slotted in at Centre Half Forward for the Roosters. If he does stay there this will give him a great run up forward, adding to his resume of versatility.

Once again, James Sellar assumes his starting position on the interchange bench. He should ruck when Ackland rests or goes forward. I saw his game last week and he was impressive throughout. He took a few marks across half back, ran well through the middle of the ground, disposal was tidy and kicked two great goals. Ticking all the boxes at this stage.

West v Central @ City Mazda Stadium (Richmond)
Jason Porplyzia - called up to Crows
Chris Schmidt - called up to Crows

Jack Gunston maintains his position in the Centrals league team. Just doesn't seem to have the same vibe around him as he did 6-8 weeks ago. Let's hope he can notch a solid performance this week, take a week off and then power home for the stretch and feature prominently in Centrals' finals surge.

Split Round

Summary to follow next week:

South v Norwood @ Hickinbotham Oval (Noarlunga)
- McKernan, Cook, Young

Port v Sturt @ Alberton Oval
- Martin, Riley

Bye
Eagles (Knights, Burton, Thompson, Jacky)

Why haven't the Crows tried to get a Reserves game for some of the Eagles listed players this week? It's a possibility they may have an arrangement for the teams that are playing next week, but it is a concern that the four players listed above may not play any football for two consecutive weekends.

I read some where that they tried to get a game for Knights in some SANFL teams reserves side but I'm not sure about the others.

Davis seems less than interested./quote]

Or is that just his style of play. Some players look laid back but within are quite intense. Looking at Davis, he strikes me as that sort of player...cool and composed which may be mistaken for disinterested!

Just watching the North V Glenelg game. Davis seems less than interested. I hope the disappointment and somewhat unjustified dropping doesn't hammer the confidence he was building.
The good news is C Cornes is finished as a player. Couldn't happen to a nicer tool.

I agree with you I thought he look a bit disinterested today. I'm a big fan of Davis but today he was very ordinary. He was beaten majority of times in one on one contests with Kirkby and he had no offensive game what so ever today. If Kirkby kicked straight he couldve finished with about 5 goals. I dont think Phil got out of 1st gear today.

A lot of people criticise Walker for not working hard enough on the field but I think Davis needs to work a lot harder as well. He looks for that easy kick in the back pocket too much instead of trying to create play up the ground.

An indifferent game from Davis? Give me a player who excels at AFL level and is average in the SANFL any day. There are plenty of players who do it the other way round.

At least we won't hear Neil crap on with stuff like "he went back with a fantastic attitude" or "took it the right way." What a complete waste of time for all concerned. Davis playing SANFL is like asking Van Gogh to paint your garage.

Do you blame the kid? Most AFL players take 25-30 games (see Richard Douglas) before they feel comfortable and at ease with their place in the team. He has just come off win a national award in his profession only to be dropped for nothing. This will play a huge part on his physiological make up and for a very long time he will be looking over his shoulder expecting that phone call that he had been dropped.

It’s still disgraceful treatment of the kid.

yeah his career is over

FFS get a grip

if he is half as smart as we hear he is he will take it the right way and come back strongly

Average, he wasn't terrible though.

Cornes was hilarious at times. Sure he ran around and got plenty of cheap kicks in the backlines - but he's so slow these days it's unreal. Fumbles, falling over, caughty frequently. Not sure there's ever been a player go backwards so quickly.

Okay, that's over-dramatising. Soft as butter crows98, whoever you are. Man up.

You have no idea what his attitude was where as Neil see's him everyday...I know who I'd believe!

You still embarassing yourself on here...?

That load of tripe above is the funniest thing I've read on here in a while!

And just so you know, he hasn't won anything. He's been nominated for an award...

Well congratulations.

I’m guessing we’re not having dinner and a movie tonight? Oh right, i don’t know you and don’t care if i ever do. That’s the part that counts.

Enough of the crap, as i won’t give up and it will just end in the mods having to delete a truck load of posts so if it so terrible, if it’s so bad...tell my why?

Unless you’re an inhuman imbecile, play the ball and not the man. Tell me why it’s so bad, not that my posts are embarrassing as that part i don’t care about. Unless you’re only about making yourself feel better, tell me why he won’t lose confidence and why he won’t automatically lose that safety of team security and being part of the team.

He will have lost that and it will take him a long time to get it back.

Seriously that's a prima donna post crows98. I'm not happy with Davis's omission but those claims of yours there are as outlandish as you'll see on this site.

still another year on his contract too.

this is now the 3rd thread going about phil! I love the way he goes about it and he should be there over stevo but make no mistake if this gets him down then he has to quickly reset... Im sure he has been dropped before in junior ranks this is what happens in footabll clubs, he was unlucky but if he wants to be an AFL player for a long time then he needs to get a stronger competitive streak!

Btw just cause he didnt have a good day today doesn't mean its due to him being dropped, whos to say that he wouldn't of put in the same performance for us!

Ok, so the next time he plays a game for the crows, his first thought won’t be, have I done enough to keep my place in the side? Not, gee that was an awesome win tonight, everyone played well and I’m starting to belong. Hell no.

After getting dropped this week, his first thought will be – oh ****, i hope i don’t get dropped and that feeling will hang around for a long time. It’s human nature to have individual and selfish thought when your livelihood is on the line.

Team security can improve confidence, but at Phil's age and experience he doesn't deserve it yet, nor do his performances absolutely warrant it. He's been good and will be an exceptional footballer but he hasn't exactly been tearing teams apart.

All this should do is improve Phil's will and desire to get back into the team, and that should fuel even more improvement. If a player gets dropped from a side and doesn't work extra hard to get back in, then he has a serious problem.

Phil was average... He was so on his game last Friday night against Mooney but today he was often a metre behind Kirkby or making the wrong decision in the air. On the plus side his disposal was pretty spot on although the majority were handballs in defence.

He finished with 3 kicks, 10 handballs, 4 marks, 1 free for, 2 frees against and 2 tackles.

Matthew Wright was fairly good and ended the day with 23 disposals. He had 7 kicks, 16 handballs, 4 marks, 2 frees for, 1 free against and 1 tackle.
