ROUND 5 2009:

Saturday 25th April
Centrals v Glenelg - Adelaide Oval (ABC TV)

• Omitted Brad Symes will most likely take to the field for the Dogs in the ANZAC Day clash. In the reserves Ricky Henderson will look to build on his strong performance from last week. James Sellar is named on an extended interchange for the Glenelg seniors while rookie Brian Donnelly will line-up in the seconds.

Eagles v South – Woodville

• For the Panthers Shaun McKernan has been named at CHF but will probably spend most of his time in the ruck. And possibly providing a hint of the Crows final team, Myke Cook has been named on the back flank. Jarrhan Jacky hasn’t been named in the Eagles squad so he is expected to play for the Crows, he could be replaced in the Eagles team by fellow Crow Robert Shirley.

Sturt v North - House Brothers

• Tony Armstrong has been named on the back flank for North Adelaide and Phil Davis has been named on an extended bench. One player needs to drop out so lets just hope it’s not Davis. Greg Gallman has been named at FB in the reserves. For Sturt Brodie Martin will line-up on the wing and Tom Lee will again play in the reserves.

Sunday 26th April
West v Norwood - City Mazda (ABC TV)

• Will Young has been named in a squad of 24 for Norwood’s league side and is all but guaranteed of making his league debut as he has been named in the back pocket! :thumbsu: It's a sign of how far he has come in the space of a few months and he has jumped ahead of Aaron Kite who is named in the reserves. For West Chris Schmidt has been named in the midfield but will most likely line-up in defence once again. Ruckman Brad Moran HAS been named in the ruck for West so that all but rules him out of playing for Adelaide.

BYE – Port

Wow, congratulations to Will Young at what appears to be a likely league debut! Another 70-something pick doing well for Norwood, you must be pleased after Kite and Walker last year ;)
Last week was the first time I had seen him for over a month and I was staggered at the improvements he has made to his game. He looks to be playing with a lot of confidence and as a result he’s backing himself. He’s getting to a lot of contests, he’s helping out teammates, he’s prepared to take them on and go for a run. I was just so impressed by what I saw last week and it’s really encouraging that his form is being recognised with a league debut. He’s a good fit at Norwood because if there’s one thing we lack it is key, tall defenders. I think he’ll play a lot of football deep in defence this year and long term he’s a good FB proposition IMO. Even though he's quick he tends to let his opponent get away a bit but one on one he is extremely difficult to beat. He'll get a lot of chances with the Legs this year because of our shortage of height in defence.

Although out of every positive there is a negative, and in this case it’s Aaron Kite. It must be pretty disheartening for the young man to be stuck in the reserves while a new draftee comes in and plays in a position which was his for most of 2008. Kite’s progress has halted while Young’s stocks soar. He'd be pleased for his mate but bitterly disappointed it’s not him playing in the seniors on Sunday.

Well done Will Young on your promotion, lets hope Henderson, Kite, Donnelly and Lee follow suit soon.

If Henderson keeps up his performances his form is going to be hard to ignore. He looks an exciting prospect indeed. Gotta love Basketball converts.

haha, I went from footy to basketball (bloody hell, wrong again).

It's quite a change in tems of banter etc, after this guy fouled me I got a tech for rubing his head.....whoops. Have to be a lot more discrete in basketball, as there's plenty of stray elbows when you run around. When in footy you just push etc.

With franchises collapsing left, right and centre perhaps we could enter a team in the NBL?

Central v Glenelg reserves played tonight.

According to a gun poster at SAFooty, "Crows Irish recruit Brian Donnelly was a strong target for the visitors playing deep in attack". He kicked 2.1 (and was adjudged 3rd best) whereas Ricky Henderson kicked 1.2. :thumbsu:

I've been playing basketball since I was 11 I think. It's great fun but as you'd expect from a non-contact sport (sorta, it's pretty rough) it can be a bit soft. Always fun coming up against football players though, they fire up so much when they get fouled hehe.

Yeah we have a few decent players now. Probably need a 7" center and we'd be right. Jacky & Henderson as Guards and Tippett & Maric as forwards :)

 Impressive versatility from a bloke whose just started playing the game:thumbsu:

You ****ing beauty.

North were 6 goals to 1 in the first half and then Sturt kicked 6 to 1 in the second half but when the siren went we were 3 points up!

Davis was much, much better today. Gutsy stuff. Had a huge hand in the late goal we kicked in the first when he smothered a kick and with nobody in the 50 punted the ball forward where Wade Thompson ran on to it, passed to Allers and bam goal. Also took some strong marks in tough conditions.

And the Central District train shows no sign of stopping. :thumbsu:

A great 84 point win in trying conditions at Adelaide Oval. It was f**king freezing!

On a side note, if there is a BYE for PAMFC, is Maric allowed to play for the reserves of another SANFL side? I remember that used to be the case not sure if it is now though?

Only caught the highlights of the Centrals game, but it looked like Matthew Westhoff had a blinder on Sellar. :(

Shirley was pretty good for the Eags, as you'd expect. Never flinched and handled the ball well in tough conditions.

First time I'd seen McKernan and he is pretty impressive. Played mainly in ruck - he moves well around the ground. Definitely a modern type ruckman as opposed to the dinosaur type ruckman. Has an excellent leap. Will be interesting to see where they develop him. Will perhaps play a Tippett type role eventually?

I didn't see the last quarter but saw the first 3 and unfortunately I'd have to agree with you.

The first quarter was quiet from both players but the numerous forward entries for Central eventually showed up Sellar.

I really, really want Sellar to succeed and he is still young and learning various positions such as defence but his display today left a lot to be desired.

The problem is not once he gains possession. He has very good skills and adequate movement with the ball. As a rebounding player on the counter-attack he is fine.

In fact, he often tries to cover space too often to the degree he gives his opponent too much latitiude. Westhoff was far too agile for him and gained free space way too easily. Was also able to turn Sellar inside-out too easy as well in showing Jimmy has a large turning circle. Overall Sellar doesn't use his now developed frame. For a big man he plays like he is 10kg lighter than he is. Finally, his overall intensity and desperation still needs to lift a few notches.

How can i explain it? Do you remember playing junior cricket and there was a skied catch opportunity. The poor useless kid closest to the ball could easily make the ground but seemed to put in the 'short steps' in order to not hurt their hands or inevitably suffer the embarrassment of a dropped catch. Then, once they couldn't reach the ball, the last couple strides were big desperate lunges and of course they just didn't quite get there:rolleyes: Some of Sellar's defensive efforts look like he could have made the ground or done the job if only he gave 100% from the start of the contest:mad:

I still believe Sellar has potential IF ONLY he would show 100% intensity 100% of the time. (Cue Moran discussion also). If he doesn't 2010 will be his last year.

Thanks for the updates RL and glengowan. :thumbsu: Really pleased to hear Davis had a good game!

I could kick a bag on Sellar, or hold him possessionless up forward, his only hope of making it is as a ruckman.

He is still very dominate in contests. But I still have doubts about him on the lead. Lucky for him today he only had Sturt's backup ruckman. So he wasnt being beaten for pace.

Very good game today except for 2 inneffective kicks at the Northern End.
