Hey guys, on the Melbourne board we were discussing young ruckmen we might be able to gamble on with some later picks in this years drraft.

Who are the best (young) non-AFL alligned ruckmen going around in the SANFL at the moment?

Depends on what you want.

Jonathan Giles is probably the best and is abour 24 now. Used to be on Powers list when they had a heep of ruckman. He played for Centrals but was always No 3 Ruckman. Go delisted by Port way too soon and then moved to Sturt where he has dominated this year

Dan Gorringe from Norwood. Only 18. think he will go to Gold Coast.

Big jimmy Mieklejohn from Port Magpies.

Johnathon Griffin has been really good in the SANFL this year for Centrals, he might be worth a shot, but I think he wants to go west.

Brady Dawe is an athletic moblie ruck man who has can take marks around the ground and is a good kick.

What if Giles doesn't want to move to the Gold Coast, and would rather stay home in Adelaide?

I assume he can decline the GC's offer but if nominates for the National Draft I guess he opens himself up for a possible move to Melbourne or Perth.

I wonder - if he only nominated for the PSD, maybe talks a bit in the press about how he'd love to stay living in SA...

I hear that Ryan Willits is a fantastic ruckman.

In all seriousness, the best two stats wise this year were probably Jonathon Giles and Adam Cockshell. Trevor Cranston is usually around the top, but I'm fairly sure he's mid to late 20's in age now.

Not sure to be honest.

Judging by Rendell's comments that he is by far the best ruckman outside of AFL and would walk into MANY AFL sides suggests that DC would have a genuine crack. Especially since they need some ready made ruckmen before thier kids develop.

I don't think PSD would be an option to be honest. I think he will sign with GC. The only way we might be able to get him is if we trade with GC but I am not sure if that is even allowed to be honest.

Rendell was a fine ruckman himself, knows a good ruck when he sees one. Then again he could have a bias towards them because Giles aint the best player in the SANFL. Best ruckman yes but only in 2010 - his breakout year:

But as far as SANFL ruckman go there are a few good ones:

Giles - Great 2010, dominated hitouts and around the ground with possession, and kicked goals. A great all round performance, he stepped up and played like an AFL ruck.

Parry - I have always rated him, he beats blokes 5-10cm taller than him all the time despite being 194cm, he is a very very strong man with a big leap. If he was 200cm he'd be on an AFL list. Agressive, enforces himself on the contest, midfielders feed off him taps, really has a presence. Many worse rucks have had a shot at AFL such as Cain Ackland. He molests Ackland. But I think Parry will be easily overlooked as blokes like Sandilands would just reach over him and win it easily. Giles though had his measure in their contests this year but only just.

Cockshell - Hasn't done a lot till this year, did well for South, strong sort around 200cm was on Port's list briefly. Don't think he is AFL material, gets lots of hitouts but not a lot else.

Cranston - Solid ruckman, beats the weaker ones but loses to the best. But definitely your typical good state league ruck who does enough but wouldn't be AFL material.

Mieklejohn - Has turned into a big beastly ruck 198cm but must surely be a good 110kg. He is huge and very strong, not a bad leap and good tapping. Gets a fair amount of the footy. Whilst he isn't a top shelf ruck he's certainly better than some of the second stringers running around in the AFL atm such as Skipper/Hale etc.

Dawe - Still young, gets beaten almost every week but is definitely improving, there is something there I think for the future.

McKenzie - Far too old and more of a backyard bully but is a bloody good ruckman. Wouldn't have the fitness for AFL.

After reading this article about Andrew Krakouer becoming a West Coast Eagle as soon as the trade week got me thinking about Giles.

If Matthew Rendell really thinks that Giles is as good as he is making him out to be, why wouldn't it be worth it from our part to try and work a trade with GC on this one?!

If as Rendell says Giles is the best player in SANFL and by far and away the best ruckman out side of AFL who would walk into a lot of AFL sides, why would we not explore the possibility of GC signing him up and then trading him to us?! Its definetly worth a shot IMHO and might be worth it more than going after someone like Jacobs.

Trev will be 31 in April next year.

It'll become clearer as the trade week gets going I guess. These blokes with their ducks and drakes...

A couple of questions might need to be answered first...

Who is the better player (both now and projected): Jacobs or Giles. How much better?

What would GC be prepared to take in a trade for Giles? I seem to recall reading somewhere that they're not going to be going past the 3rd round in this draft, so there's no point in offering them a 4th round selection. Then again, if we can get him for a 3rd round selection that's still cheaper than Jacobs.

Umm, the whole reason we are going for Jacobs is because Carlton have too many rucks and so he will not get a game.
GC need a ready-to-go ruck, why would they trade a free one away?

That's the reason why Jacobs is interested in leaving Carlton.. it doesn't mean that Carlton are going to let him go cheaply.

GC have plenty of ruck options already on their list and may well be adding Gorringe and/or Lycett in the draft this year. They may well be open to the idea of trading Giles.. you never know until you ask.

Who is this Sutherland bloke The Bulldogs have conjured for their final series? 201 cm, 21 years old, 104kgs... is he any good? Apparently he played in a Riverland GF last week

Was playing Glenelg 2's, left to chase coin in the country. Centrals lost Milne? I think to injury and needed a back up to buckets. From all accounts their ressy ruckmen werent ready for league and called on "Pumpa" Sutherland. Is a serviceable ruckmen but an odd unit.

He's a good backup to MacKenzie. Not AFL standard. Kicked 5 goals for Werribie I think it was. Has played on and off throughout the year, but I doubt he could do anything at AFL level. Disposal looks poor from what I've seen, and lumbers around the ground. Probably better for a Bulldogs fan to elaborate though.

You would suspect they want a senior body to protect their young ruck stocks for a few years. Giles is only 22 and is a bit of an unknown in that he hasnt played at the top level yet.

If they can get their hands on someone else youde think theyd go for it - but if not, I reckon theyd want to keep Giles for themselves.

Will be an intersting one for sure.
