Snapshot

Scott Clouston is a rookie list player with the Brisbane Lions after a meteoric rise in AFL football. Only two years in the game, he is a product of the AFL Queensland 'Rookie Search' program, having graduated from the University of Queensland Bulldogs second division U18 side in 2005 via Morningside (AFLQ) and the Queensland U18s in 2006 to the Lions in 2007. An athletic utility player, he can fill a key position role at either end of the ground or can play as a free-running wingman/half forward.

Background

Scott Clouston is a naturally gifted athlete. He represented Brisbane Grammar "firsts" in cricket, soccer, water polo and swimming. Yet two years after he left the presitigeous GPS school having never played a game of Australian football in his life he was rookie listed by the Brisbane Lions.

Clouston, the son of a former Queensland Country and Brisbane first-grade rugby player, is a product of AFL Queensland's 'Rookie Search Program' which offers elite athletes from other sports the opportunity to pursue a career in the national code of football.

He'd always liked AFL football but, with it on the banned list at the rugby/soccer-dominated BGS, it wasn't until he began a Commerce/Business Management degree at the University of Queensland in 2005 that he had his first taste of the game. But he learned quickly. He was a member of the UQ Bulldogs U18 division two premiership side in 2005 and won his team's Best First-Year Player Award.

An athletic utility player with the capacity to fill a key position role at either end of the ground or play as a free-running wingman/half forward, he was looking to fast-track his education and elevate his football profile so he transferred in 2006 to AFLQ State League club Morningside, coached by former St.Kilda, Fitzroy and South Melbourne AFL player John Blair.

And from there, in the next step of a remarkable journey to AFL ranks, he was chosen as a 19-year-old in the Queensland U18 side, coached by Brisbane Lions triple AFL premiership star Craig McRae.

Eligible to play below his age group under the Rookie Search program because of his inexperience, he grew in stature as the year went on. Although raw in a football sense he showed enormous athletic potential at the national U18 championships, where a star-studded Queensland side won the division two championship undefeated. Later, he earned his senior AFLQ debut and was invited to undergo State Screening as part of the AFL draft camp process.

Sadly, he was unable to undergo the exhaustive testing program that would have further demonstrated his athletic capabilities, having badly injured his ankle in the opening minutes of the AFLQ reserves grand final.

But McRae didn't need any further convincing. Even before the AFL draft he offered a huge recommendation of the ever-personable teenager. Said McRae: "I can see him on AFL rookie list and it would be really exciting to watch his development over the next couple of years because his progress this year was just exceptional. For a guy who had never played the game two years ago he's come on in leaps and bounds. His athleticism is fantastic and he's got a lot of untapped potential. He is tall and deceptively quick, and while he can play tall he's also capable of playing on much smaller opponents because of his athleticism. And he's got that ability to jump over a pack and take a 'hanger'. He's still learning but he's got a great work ethic, is a competitor, he wants to listen and learn, and has the potential to be very good."

The Brisbane Lions didn't need any convincing either. They took him as a Queensland priority selection in the 2006 AFL rookie draft to complete a big year for the Clouston family after 17-year-old sister Elle was chosen in the Queensland Youth Olympic Rowing Team.

Re: Scott Clouston

Scott Clouston, playing for the first time against his former side, presented well across half forward and showcased the athletic abilities that saw him drafted to the Lions in the rookie draft back in December.

Re: Scott Clouston

Have to say I'm really impressed with this kid.
Has great skills, hand and foot, presents well, and seems to have tremendous aerobic capacity.
I cannot believe he is only 2 years at the game.

A definite KPP of the future - looked real good at CHF in a few early games with his strong overhead marking, but has been thrown down back of late - probably part of his learning curve.

But his last qtr on Sunday, playing "sort of on a wing", showed me he can also play as a tall, athletic winger. Left his opponent (David Lillico - a credentialed State player who was one of Morningside best for the first 3 qtr's) in his wake as he covered nearly every inch of the Gabba.

I'm predicting a big future for this kid - we'll see if I'm right...........

Sounds like he can play a similar role to Adam Goodes?

Re: Scott Clouston

I was wondering about Mills or Hadley in that role for us...especially after the Sydney game

I think I might've confused you. I meant for Clouston to become an Adam Goodes-like player, not to run with him.

Despite his height, Hadley is more in & under than Goodes. Not as athletic either (not many blokes are).

Mills does have a big motor, but doesn't really have a burst of speed and currently his disposal is a bit iffy. His aim should be to develop into a key defender who focuses on spoiling, shadowing his opponent throughout and limiting the guy's influence. Mills tagged Goodes, not play a Goodes-type role. It is possible that he can become a more attacking weapon, but so far we haven't seen signs of it.

Clouston is that tall, athletic runner with good skills, and can play key position or flank/wing. Obviously he still has a long way to go, but there's quite a bit of potential there.

Re: Scott Clouston

Haven't seen Clouston move, but I was amazed by Tyler's raw pace in the NAB cup. Not sure if he has the turning circle and change or direction as a Goodes type, but I'd back him in a sprint every time.

Scotty really snuck into the place without getting a second glance. In the rookie draft Kiel and Dzfer had the reputations. There was hype over Tippet's testing results. Hamill was already well known, as was Corrie of course. Gavin Grose was mentioned often as a likely Brisbane rookie selection, ending up at Port.

Sounds like a few people are starting to understand why the inspector got the nod.

Only time I've seen Clouston was in the intraclub where he played on Roofie for most/all of the game. It was a good contest, with two tall but very athletic players going at each other. Roofie did really well as a forward, but Scott matched his run for the whole night.

Re: Scott Clouston

Clouston apparently was close to best on ground last weekend, shutting Korey Fulton down. I haven't been keeping count but this seems to be a regular occurrence for him.

He seems a very likely type - I've not seen a lot of him on field but the reports suggest he is very mobile and athletic, particularly at KPP size. I hear he is held in high regard at the club and must have an immense amount of improvement in him. He's gone from being a fringe AFLQ reserve grader to being a force in the AFLQ seniors. I wonder if the club will look to promote him to the senior list at the end of the year, if only to keep him safe from being drafted by other clubs.

One of those players who's future is an interesting one for the club. We have quite a few players who are pushing for those last 10 spots on the list. It all depends on how the club chooses to move forward - how many to delist/trade, what types of players to trade/delist, etc

Re: Scott Clouston

Practically none of us had heard of Clouston when he was drafted last year. There was a report on him, including some words of endorsement from Craig McRae.

When I saw him at the intra-club opposed to Matt Tyler for the whole game, I thought he looked like a tall, athletic, quick and disciplined kind of player. Due to the shutdown nature of his job that night, I couldn't tell what his skills were like.

He was another latecomer to the sport (even being allowed to play in U18 Championships when he was 19 because of it), and it seems like he's improved in leaps and bounds in a short period of time.

With regards to next year, I feel that this will be a key consideration. When it comes to deciding who to keep on the list, I think for the "fringe" players, their upside is one of the main attributes looked at. Looks like Scott has this in his favour.

Re: Scott Clouston

Met Clouston at Club Champs dinner. Seems like a nice bloke/kid.

He also seemed absolutely blown away that we knew his name.

Good bloke... as all UQ students are. ;)

Re: Scott Clouston

End of Season Player Review

Clouston is an athletic tall who is new to the game and was picked up in the rookie draft. He had a consistent year playing as a key defender for Suncoast and seems to be picking up the game quite quickly.

Re: Scott Clouston

Not much is said about Clouston but I think he could be something very special very soon.

There has been a history of some very good rucks and key defenders coming from the rookie list. Rutten was a rookie.

If Merrett went down its either Mills or Clouston and it is worth noting that he held down the FB spot in the second half of last season for the Suncoast and regularly got mentions for the great job he did. He was a bit of a quiet performer last year and a guy who might surprise a lot of people if he got the chance.

I have heard Clouston has good running ability, but does he have the bulk to take on the gorilla forwards?

Agree absolutely with your assessment of Clouston- impressed me immediately with his balance and poise, excellent kick, good size and physique. Importantly, seems to have that extra time the special players have, and the precision in decision-making that really isn't teachable. Don't know whether he was selected as a potential keydefender, as he strikes me as perhaps being played out of position at fullback. Nevertheless to my mind he seems to be making an excellent fist of a key role.

Good in traffic- I think he will be a very valuable addition if not this year then soon, given the chance.

The only issue might be, with the depth of maturing talent working its way through our playing list is whether it will be the Lions who see this bloke achieve his promise (and that might go for a number of others as well).

Yeah Clouston has a lot of names to get past if he wants to be a key position player, and the 2007 draft didn't make things any easier. One suspects he may well have been on the Ebert bandwagon.:p

Met him at 2007 Club Champs dinner in October. Looked pretty solid to me.

Definitely not currently equipped to handle the Gherigs, Halls and Lynchs, should be okay with some more development under his belt.

Re: Scott Clouston

I thought it was interesting that in the final preseason game we went in with what looked like a full strength squad (of 29) and Clouston was included. Apart from Begley he was the only rookie. I don't think he ended up playing but it seems to suggest that the club likes his work. Begley will presumably be promoted in time for round 1, but Clouston may well be next in line.

I see Scott being the depth tall defender at the moment, and he can be called on to take the 2nd or 3rd tall forward if required.

At the moment he's behind Merrett, Patfull and Roe at least, while Mills and Collier could also get a go depending on team balance.

I would think that Joel Tippett will be elevated in Beau McDonald's place. Colm will be the nominated rookie, and the likes of Kiel and Clouston will come in if the club places players like Moody and Sheldon on the long term injury list.

Makeshift ruckman Scott Clouston made another outstanding contribution. While beaten at the bounces, Clouston worked himself particularly hard around the ground and kicked four quality goals all from long range. His fourth goal at the eight minute mark of the final term leveled the scores, but even he could not lift his side from that point.

Clouston is likely to miss the game (against Redland next Sunday) and represent Queensland instead, the only Lions rookie selected in the State squad.

Re: Scott Clouston

Clouston named on extended bench for possible MCG debut

Link

Rookie Clouston has been named on the extended interchange bench after being elevated to the senior list on Thursday morning in place of retired ruckman Beau McDonald.

The 193cm key position prospect has starred for the Suncoast Lions in recent weeks playing in a variety of roles up forward, down back and in the ruck.

21 year-old Clouston was a standout junior basketballer, soccer player, cricketer and swimmer before focussing his attention to football in his final school years.

Congrats Scotty. Back yourself son!
