Norm Smith Medallist
Just under $900K per year is pretty good. He can be prone to injury but at his best that's probably a bargain. His non-fuss four-year contract extension with Carlton today speaks volumes.

All good, I was thinking more of the fact he seems to play hurt at time, not that he missed games.Pardon the intrusion, but are you confusing him w/ someone else?
He's played 61 consecutive games since debuting.
$825k according to the Herald Sun which is a bargain.

Seriously, $825k pa is a bargain for that kid. Should have been on $1m pa. Easily your best player by a mile.
JDG shouldn't be asking for any more than $600k pa in comparison.
Isn't he captain now? Or at least shared captaincy?Agree it's a good move on our behalf - it will take him to free agency but I'm tipping he'll be captain by then (2026) so will be less inclined to move*
*although it's happened before.
Cripps, with Weitering and Walsh as deputies.Isn't he captain now? Or at least shared captaincy?
Just quietly the no fuss approach of our re-signee did too! He’s not the next in line, IMO, but if we have someone like Adams or Crisp next year then I can definitely see IQ as captain by 2025-26. Who knows though given we’re supposedly so strong in the leadership sense that we’ve gone with a 34yo in 2022…His non-fuss four-year contract extension with Carlton today speaks volumes.

I don’t believe Pendlebury’s age proves we have a leadership issue. You don’t have to be Captain to show leadership.Just quietly the no fuss approach of our re-signee did too! Moore, Howe, Crisp, Maynard, Adams, Steele and Grundy all show leadership qualities.
Our young players have plenty of people to learn from.
95 percent agree with that, with the proviso that no decision has been predetermined about 2024. Although it seems unlikely he will play on after his two year contract, that decision will be made at the time based on his form fitness and willingness to continue.I suspect that with Pendles signing for the 2 years that this will see his playing days out and that he held on to the captaincy for this year more for stability than anything else, with all the other change that is going on.
I suspect that he will step down from the captaincy for next season, but obviously will still be about to assist with the transition to the new captain.
I have no problem with it.
I just think that he is very keen to move in to coaching.95 percent agree with that, with the proviso that no decision has been predetermined about 2024. I have always been divided on Pendles leadership qualities, his skills and ability to inspire have to be unquestioned.I see it too. Kid has real leadership qualities. I see him as the most likely candidate at this early stage from that generation.
I just think that he is very keen to move in to coaching.
Of course, if we improve through the roof in season 2023 and look a genuine threat for the following year then anything could happen.
I have always been divided on Pendles leadership qualities, his skills and ability to inspire have to be unquestioned.
But every time I remember one particular piece of play from the '90 grand final I'm reminded what Pendles lacks - or at least doesn't openly display.
It was late in the game and the druggies we even still trying to somehow get back in the game and a Collingwood player - seeing a druggie charging at the ball free on the ground - threw himself directly behind the ball and put his head down, deliberately letting the druggie plow into him rather than giving him a run at the ball.
Tony Shaw was still laying on the ground after his own efforts, though clearly exhausted pushed himself up and clenched his hand to his team mate in approval. The desire and refusal to yield an inch radiated from every inch of Tony's body and every player on the ground was very aware of it.
THAT is leadership.
Pendles will get to 400, and win another flag.I think two years will see him out, but the other possibility other than us being good to have him stay is that we're struggling with a heap of kids in the team and they persuade Pendles to stay on in a bit of a Hodge at Brisbane role.
Only if we win one within 2 years which is extremely unlikely.Pendles will get to 400, and win another flag.
