I can think of a few:

1. Election of John Howard to a 4th consecutive term of office.

2. The voters of Australia electing to give the government a Senate majority in a stunning mandate for reform.

3. The triumphant re-election of George W. Bush with a comprehensive mandate and a resounding seal of approval of his first term.

4. The appointment of a new Iraqi government.

5. The death of Yasser Arafat.

6. A record 27 year low unemployment rate of 5.2%.

7. Civil war in the ALP upon their shattering defeat.

1. Depends on how you define highlight, after this term a lot of people may end up a whole lot worse, and the world may be unsafer. However, money in the bank will be safe, so it all depends on what you value.

2. See #1, if he uses this like I expect him to use it, all we're going to see is the tyranny of the majority at the expense of minority interests getting screwed.

3. Definite lowlight, the fact that his administration wanted Downer to head the IAEA says a lot really. The only real indication that can be drawn from the election result is that the Religious Right rule the US.

4. That's great, has all of Baghdad got running water and electricity yet? How about the 100,000 who wont get to vote?

5. Agreed, hopefully a moderate leader with the will to reign in the extremists will be elected to the Presidency.

6. I've already had my two cents on ALL measurements of U/E levels in this country, I wont go into it again. What about the CAD blowout, high debt levels etc?

7. So you think that a One-Party-Controls all situation is a good thing I take it?

1. Yeh congrats to Howard...shows that the one who lies loudest and longest wins.

2. Mandate? Is that like manboobs? ( following my instinct as noted by my membership of the rabid right) oh and doesnt it mean Howard has a mandate from those who voted for him?

3.Was it a seal of approval or a laughing seal at John ''why the long face'' Kerry?

4.Whats the name of this new government? Who is Prime Minister? When was the vote? If you answer George Bush to all 3 then thats ok.

5.Yes about the one thing that has the potential to bring positive change.

6.Refer to point 1. Statistics ,statistics and dammed lies.

7.Nice turn of phrase ''civil war'' maybe if Latham didnt listen to his advisors and kept on swinging Howard may be collecting a pension

Tim56: In defeat malice in victory revenge. There seems to be a hell of a lot of triumphalism going around.

A few local ones I can think of:

Best humour/joke: George Brandis, "The Rodent" vs "Lying Rodent"

Best stuff-up: line ball between Mark Latham, Tassie Forest Policy and Mark Latham, launch of Tax & Family Policy and those pesky tables

Best corporate behaviour: James Hardie, honourable mention to Telstra for predatory pricing

Best effort by Govt: Sydney's City Rail, honorable mention to Energex of Qld

Best "I've got a deal for you": Federal National Party

Best gymnast (somersault category): Peter Costello, commentary on the economy during the election, and after

Best family values: Ross Cameron

Best imitation of the Hindenberg's last flight: Mark Latham, honourable mention to the Democrats

That was the funniest and saddest at the same time. Hopefully he gets united with an ice pick like his "buddy" Trotsky sooner rather than later.

That's what I thought as well, you've jumped ahead a year Tim.
And in the true conservative spirit, Tim56 will now deny that he ever made a mistake in the year, but was simply poorly advised by his calendar dept. who informed him that it was currently 2005. He will of course hang his dept. head out in the breeze to swing for a while, but will refuse to sack him as they are a talented bunch in the calendar dept. and good time and date advisors don't come along every day.
