I love the RUS but I guess we will have to face facts, he is just to injury prone.

He was looking good at the end of 2007, but just couldn't get back on the oval since.
Even if he does play next year, unless he takes the world by fire, Nathan Buckley won't consider keeping him on the list. Poor Kid great potential, just couldn't stay injury free.

The problem Rusling seems to have now is that it's not only his shoulders letting him down.

At different times this year he had the shoulder go on him again, he did a serious hip injury, he had a fractured cheekbone and then just when it seemed he was back he got the flu, pulling out of the VFL final within hours of the match.

As stated before, he is just so injury prone that it is sad.:(

Player reviews: 2. Sean Rusling

During the off-season, Collingwoodfc.com.au will publish a review on each player (in numerical order) which will take a look at their 2009 season, including highlights, statistics and a comment from an assistant coach. Click HERE to view the 2009 player review page.

2009 season
It was a groundhog year for the injury-plagued utility, only managing seven VFL matches this season. After recovering from his third shoulder reconstruction, the 22-year-old made a return through the VFL in Round Six, impressing coaches with a role down back, before a sickening collision in the final minutes saw him miss two weeks with a fractured cheekbone. Two consecutive appearances in the VFL were followed by another stint on the sidelines (seven weeks) with a hip flexor injury.

Rusling, who was drafted as a forward, could play a role down in defence next season after spending the majority of his time there in the VFL this year.

2009 Highlights
Round Six v Coburg Tigers: In his first match of the year, Rusling looked at home in defence, picking up 15 possessions and four marks. In limited game time the young Magpie proved why the coaching staff have kept their faith in him. His tenacity for the disputed ball combined with his quality of usage only adds further excitement to the potential of this prospective star.

Gavin Brown (VFL head coach) says: He was unfortunately injured at times in between the seven games he played. The pleasing thing was he got through the season and played the last few games. He will have his first full preseason since he has been here. His shoulders are fine. He predominantly played down back this year and I would think he will start there again next year and see how he progresses.

I've pretty much given up on him making it AFL level.

Watching him in the VFL this year after so many injuries he plays like a robot avoiding any big collisions.

I will be very surprised if he gets anywhere near back to his late '07 form.

He's probably on a 1yr contract and I've heard first hand that if he gets any kind of shoulder injury then he is throwing the towell in and going back to SA. That's why when he came back last year he didn't tape his shoulders, he said what's a little bit of tape going to do?, if they go then that's it.

Why do Robots avoid big collisions..? Is this some kind of Orwell-style futuristic prediction?

Why would they be looking to make him into a defensive player given our noted lack of Key Forward stocks?

That first bit is funny, its like saying, that young cricketer, he's a gun, he could potentially be better than Paul Nobes!

Then the video. Oh my sides. I counted the one mark replayed 5 times from different angles. I could do exactly the same with a Courtney Johns tribute video and get 5 minutes out of it.

Johns never played in, let alone performed in, a prelim final in front of 98,000 people.

Rusling has loads of potential, but I fear he'll never recover mentally from what he's been through.

Rusling needs to do what Goose Maguire has done at St Kilda play in the VFL and try and get some games under his belt. After he has played 10 in a row. Then see if he can have a go AFL.

But you cannot be a gun player playing 18 games in 5 years. He has shown glimpses and could be anything but he needs to do his preseason. Play in the VFL and get his own confidence in playing again before even worrying about AFL.

We do not need to do a JMAC with him after he runs around in the VFL for two weeks promote him

fair point

when he was playing a few seasons back... there were lots of criticisms about his ability to pick up the ball below his knees... but that seems to be forgotten now...
we also need to remember that he needs LOTS of space to work with...

Rusling's image on this board is now = ultra-fast, straight kicking forward with strong hands who is impossible to stop on the lead

Doesnt anyone remember Daniel Chick owning him in the overtime final in 2007 and in early 2008 McPharlin stopping him for the year?

chick chopped the arms every contest, wouldnt get away with that now

But yes rus has issues, but he is also a fast straight leading player that generally has strong hands

Hopefully he can stay injury free and be used up forward

Chick also held on to the back of Ruz's guernsey all night preventing him breaking on the lead, umpires were disgraceful that night.

There is another article on the official site stating he will start 2010 as a defender because they thought he has played well down back??? all supporters report's beg to differ.

So what your saying is that unless he dominates every opponent, he has no place in the team. His only problem is he can't remain injury free. He is by no means even close to a superstar like everyone is trying to make us believe, but he can play the game, unfortunately we will never get to see how good this kid could have been.

He is certainly one of those players who to the believers seems to just get better and better the longer he stays out of the game.

I have real doubts that he has any kind of potential as a defender. Simply because he runs in striaght lines only. So any foward with the ability to turn at pace is going to trouble him. As for a runner out of defence I haven't ever seen him kick the ball at full pace, I do doubt he has great evasive ability due to the lack of mobility.

Rusling is quick but I don't think he would create the amount of contests and spilliages that Anthony did this year. I think Anthony whilst not having the dynamic "weapon" of Rusling is better in most areas of foward play making him a more solid, reliable and valuable option as a foward to the team ( even if he does lack the glamour individually)

Whilst Anthony is a more versatile foward he is still primarily a leading FF type. He may be able to play a third tall role but where does that leave Medhurst for example? I think the reason Rusling is being tried down back more then anything is to see if he has that potential because there is a real chance that he won't break into our foward line.

True Dat, Opti.

Just hope the fans dont expect too much from him after inflating his contributions in games past. The backlash could be brutal.

Chick was fighting for his place that night - absolutely blanketed him! Recent events suggests Chick's moved on to less fruitful endeavours. What a dumb career choice.

Only 'roids I've experienced are Polaroids. I got mine whilst ice fishing in the Polar regions. Very unpleasant goings on - what with oinment and all that. Nuff said. :o

eh NO!!!!

PIES 4 LIFE when I write something you're unable to reliably interpret (see italicized portion of your response) please ask for clarification. I'll welcome it and elaborate on any unclear issues.

Atributing your inaccurate extrapolation tp my message then answering your own words makes no sense to me.

Many will agree Ruz isnt the inflated superstar some think he is and will earn his spot like everyone else in the team. Rus will show his stuff in the off season and I'll be cheering his efforts and will be elated and disappointed with his successes and his failures respectively.

I think there are just some kids out there who are genetically injury prone, and then there are some who go an entire career with only a minor hammy strain to their name. I'd love to be able to say that I think Rus has got his injuries out of the way, but I'd be amazed if he ever plays more than 14 or so games in a season - at VFL or AFL level.

Sounds like he will become a Defender but I don't know why

just because players get played in defence, doesnt mean that they're going to end up there all the time. They were looking to give him a change of scenery because he was getting injured all the time. I think Gavin Brown made that comment when he came back to the vfl.

His history as an athlete gets me thinking about how a lot of track and field people seem to get injured at the drop of a hat. I wonder if he should have stuck with just running.

Without Bryan and Rocca and Thoolen, there is a big whole in the VFL forward line.
Reckon he will Play there as he is a Forward and I would like to see him go Through a Year without getting hurt to see what he can do
