The hunt for the notorious Richmond spitter has gone nationwide. The AFL yesterday confirmed it had received information that the unidentified man who spat at Tigers players after the team's 75-point loss to Adelaide had travelled to Melbourne for Friday night's game at Telstra Dome and stayed at an inner-city hotel.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said the AFL had not given up its search for the spitter, who could be from Queensland.

"We'll do whatever we can to try to locate the person and work with the police and probably work with our media partners to see if they can help in Queensland, if that's where he's from," Demetriou said. "But this person, wherever he's from, I'd still encourage to come forward."

A spokesman last night confirmed police were following an interstate lead.

The AFL announced this week it was considering putting a protective cover over the players' races at Telstra Dome to protect players from irate supporters.

Demetriou said measures used by other codes, including inflatable devices to separate players and officials from fans, were being considered.

"I hope we don't have to go to those measures," he said.

A Richmond supporter, a 25-year-old man, has been charged on summons for offensive behaviour after another spitting incident on Friday night.

At least they are doing what they have to do.

Spitting should not be allowed. It is just so gross.
