GEELONG has entertained sending its suspended star Joel Selwood to train in the high altitude of Arizona during his enforced rest period and will almost certainly settle on a mid-season sabbatical for the player in coming days.

Although Geelong cancelled those flight plans on Monday, football boss Neil Balme confirmed last night that Selwood could still travel overseas later this week and will almost certainly spend at least a week away from the club - potentially in Queensland - with a member of the Cats' fitness and conditioning staff. Balme also confirmed the club could travel to Arizona at the end of this season.

No need to send him to Arizona. I reckon that's a bit of a wank.

Besides, he's not carrying any injury ( that we know of ), so just give him a training program and let him be for the next 3 weeks.

He's a superstar, and will come back firing!

What's amazing about the options being mooted is that this once broke & basically destitute organisation now has the financial grunt to complement its will to contemplate such alternatives.

And I love that they're investigating ways to intensify even Selwood's legendary fire in the belly.

The irony is that Joel would have gained more from the 4 weeks in Arizona than the dubious benefits the Collingwood players would maybe have achieved in their midseason sojourn. Takes a month for the body to compensate for the relative lack of O2 with increased RBC production, which you'd think is the only benefit of altitude training - assuming no scraped knees.

I think the 4 weeks off is going to be enough to get the fire in the belly going!!
I fear we may see another brownlow winner top the leaderboard that is ineligable this year - oh well, he can just focus on the norm smith then.....:D

Exactly my thoughts. And isn't Sel doing the rounds of available medals & trying to get at least one of all of them? :D

(You quote me, then I get the pleasure of quoting you. ;) )

wtf? Is that just like copying collingwood. The cats don't really need to do that.

The Collingwood fitness guys, especially Buttifant, are evangelical when it comes to altitude training. I dont doubt that there are benefits but it is easy to overstate them, and when you become evangelical, you can let belief get in the way of better judgement. The collingwood mid-season trip was farcical, although the minister of information at collingwood would have you believe it was a great success.

The benefits that Selwood would have potentially received from this trip were very marginal when compared to the cost, and by cost I mean the long plane trip, the disruption to routine, the need to adjust to a different timezone, jet lag, potential dietary issues and the difficulty you can face in being so separated from home base.

Selwood a brownlow medal:eek:

wouldn't he ask "what the hell is that?", I doubt he's even interested in that type of crap....he's a true champion, the type of player that's only in it to win premierships and it's also his greatest asset as a player. Gary junior had an eye on those awards but I get the feeling, it's not on his mind at all

Altitude training definitely works, but only from a prolonged period of time. 2 weeks is definitely farcical and IMO was a smokescreen. For what though, who knows. ASADA (or WADA, whichever agency it was) certainly had their suspicions.

The club was close and had plane tickets booked but I have heard that Joel doesn't want to go so it has been cancelled

What's the bet that he'll be in the coaches' box again this Sunday? The man is an absolute star because he just doesn't see himself as such, only as a team man for the club he has supported since he was knee high to a grasshopper (like a certain C. Ling).

What mugs where drafted ahead of him back in the 2006 post-season? :D

Just been shown on the Ch10 news here in Perth Selwood in a Bulldogs jumper training with them along with Varcoe down at Fremantle oval this evening.
Uh?

don't know if a contracted player are eligible to train with another club wearing their jumper?

In a bizarre mid-season player welfare move the champion Cats midfielder has headed west with 2009 premiership teammate Travis Varcoe ahead of a blockbuster clash with West Coast in a little more than a week.

Selwood and Varcoe will train at leading WAFL club South Fremantle. Varcoe, 23, is a hot tip to be rested from the Cats Round 15 clash with Essendon at the MCG on Saturday night.

isn't that article old and it was decided that the answer was "no"

Just can't believe Joel Corey to be the only bloke who maintains a 100% attendance.
Last season almost made me believe that his peak time was over due to the troublesome knee.
