It seems to mostly mean a suit and tie nowadays though.

Haha I attended a family function a few months ago that was "semi formal" and everyone was in a full suit, I then had another function a few weeks back (same family, same dress code) and everyone had gone the pants, nice shirt, no tie option (what I wore the first time)
