OK setting fire to the place aint gonna help, but I would like to see how the people who scream "send the ungratefull bastards home" would tolerate a week at Woomera Detention Centre, let alone months without going over the edge.

Not only are the problems there caused by the heat etc, they are also caused by boredom, there can't be much to do out there, even the locals wouldn't have much to do except head down to the local pub. The people in the detention centre don't even have that option.

The best facilites may have been provided, but there is a saying: "A golden cage is still a cage".

Sadly the only thing that will come out of the latest uprising is to give the racists ammunition against refugees who do not fit their image of what it is to be an Australian.

Yes Lil' Johnny you may say we choose who comes to this country, shame we can't choose who to throw out. I choose to throw out the racists, not the refugees.

I believe that between 40 to 50 of them have caused the riots. Those who have been involved in the riots can be sent back to where they came from on a boat and drown for all I care.

I say throw the lot out, it should be a priveldge to come to this country not a right. The people I feel sorry for are the people waiting on the immigration list to legally come in here, while these criminals are let in and given citzenship ahead of the people who wait legally to enter Australia?? Has anyone on her every worked in a detention centre. Wheher it be Woomera, Villawood, Port headland. I thought not. Unless you actually know what you are talking about, please don't judge what happens.
I have worked at Woomera, in the Mental health field.
I know exactly what happens .
1stly. It would appear that the detainees get frustrated with correct procedures.They plan these riots. They try to bribe staff.They are cashed up. The thing I find appaling is their willingness to put their children at risk, usung them as shields, to protect themselves.
People on this board should realise. That these detainees are not maltreated. They are housed in trailers as you call them, but really they are demountable rooms, which are fully insulated, fully lined, carpeted and airconditioned.They have 24 hour acces to free medical, dental, legal. They get fed an ethnic based diet. they have internet access and access to phones.
The problem seems to be their reluctance to accept, the following of procedures.
They have caused this situation themselves. They destroyed all their paperwork, eg birth certificates.So the processing of their claims takes longer.
The bottom line though is that they arrived in our country illegally.Thus they broke the law.
There are millions of Afghani people who are now sitting in refugee camps in Pakistan. Who are being processed by the correct UN authorities.They have all their paperwork. They are genuine. They are poor, they want to live in Australia to.But they didnt que jump. When they are processed, I say welcome guys.We hope you have a great life in Australia.
For those that have broke the law to enter Australia, then break the law by destroying property, assaulting people.I say, I can not sympathise with your plight. You are taking advantage of our country.
We do not want people living here who are criminals.Plain and simple.
Please guys, dont feel sorry for these people living conditions. In these detention camps they live 1000 times better than when they lived in their countries.
They live better than most of our aborigines, than some of our elderly.What about our street kids, who have been abused at home and now live in squallor.
Let the system work. Let these people be procesed to see whether they are genuine in their plight.

I admit that i have can only go on what i read in the paper and see on the news. But these people have noone to blame than themselves, if they want to do what they have to know is the wrong thing then they have to accept responability for there actions.

The main point is these people and didn't come here through the proper channels therefore the should wait like everyone else.
what makes them more important than those thousand upon thousands of refugees who have done the right thing waited followed all the rules, and yet would have to know have to wait on a group of cashed up people who p*ss and moan and whine because they have been caught out doing the wrong thing.

Any of the boat people who start or are involved in these riots are not the kind of people we want in Australia. These people are amazing they are fed clothed i am assuming have medical and dental and despite the bleating of the bleeding hearts brigade i am quite sure they would be well looked after.

Hell i am sure there are many families in the country and also homeless people who would love the conditions that these people have offered.

If you were unfortunate enough to be born and raised in a third world, war torn country ruled by dictators like Bin Laden, forced to live in appaling conditions with little or no chance of education, employment, or even living past the age of 40, what would you do?

If it were me I would be trying to escape that country any way possible. Now how would I leave. Would I wait in a refugee camp for years on end trying to avoid picking up any number of deadly diseases, waiting in the so-called queue, or would I beg, scrape and borrow money from friends and relatives to try and leave the country as quick as I could? Gee that's a tough question.

Benoit, here is your homework for the weekend. Answer me these 2 questions:

1 - Approximately, how many refugees are there currently in the world waiting in this so-called queue.

2 - On average, how many of these refugees come to Australia per year.
