If you havnt already had a look, get on the aflq website and read up the article on each club written by Terry Wilson. Certainly a step up in media coverage and written pretty well. From outside it looks very much like most clubs are being very coy about their chances, with the exception on Surfers and Grange!
Also thought it was pretty funny the little shot Marto took at Sandgate about one of their better players!

Didn't see it as Marto having a shot, more that Wilson picked up that Grange lost their ruckman to injury and Pettit might be available.... Would hope he comes back to Sandgate though. He is being a bit of a sook.

Palmy, Noosa, Magpies, Surfers, Grange, Mayne were all pretty confident about how they will go, especially Palm Beach who were suggesting that they have picked up plenty to add to a GF team. They would have to be flag favorites based on what is in those articles I reckon.

Yeah an awesome game by Mayne. Big improvement from last year.

Have set the season up well with a good start to get confidence after last year.

Gee tiger, bet you have a element of dissapointment seeing as thou you tipped against them

Congrats to the Mayne boys a great win and considering not many win against surfers at surfers, terrific. Well done and good start.

Hahaha small price to pay for a great win in regards to my tip.:D Think it was their 1st win at Surfers home ground.

Old cliche 1 week at a time but I hope this is a sign for good things to happen for Mayne this season:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Good news for the tigers. who plyed on fulton. good effort to keep him to one goal.
All other results pretty much as predicted.
Went and watched noosa vs sandgate yesterday and noosa were just a class above. Sandgate had nothing. If their winger (number 11) wasnt out there they would have been beaten by more. Noosa looked good without being exceptional. Backline was very impressive, danny O'brien played his first game for three years and was good and brewster kicked 8 goals 5 (not sure where the 7 on the website came from) and probably should have kicked 11. Next week noosa maroochy should be a ripper and also wilston vs mayne and pbc vs surfers.

What happened at Weyba rd? Keeping the hawks to less than 5 goals is a terrific effort, where they that bad ? No surprises to see brewster kicking 8. Didnt expect to see Grange do that much damage to burleigh either! I think most agreed that Burleigh would struggle but the signs are pretty good for the gorillas. Did anybody have Corrie in their goal kicking calculations? And is the hype around Surfers just that, or is Mayne really going to push the top sides?
Your thoughts please gents.

In regards to Mayne, I really hope they do, but too early to call it's only round 1. This weeks game against Grange will be a big test, fingers crossed1:thumbsu:

They were very ordinary but as I said noosas defence was extremely good. Time will tell with both surfers hype and Mayne quality

Lenny,

How did the maggies look? Obviously ran away easy winners in the end, was the score a real reflection of the game?

Yeah, pretty much. They are what they have been forever in this comp - well drilled, fit, and impossible to stop if they can get the ball in space

Corrie adds a new dimension though, he's far too good to be playing at this level

Sandgate were never in it, looked a shadow of their last 2 years, only number 11 and Forbesy showed any fight. Noosa far to physical which is no surprise. What i want to know is any team capable of penetrating their 18 man press, they are extremely disciplined at it, the footy stays in their half for long periods and eventually score goals. Sounds like mpies will be a slick outfit and could bring them unstuck. Without doubt PBC, Noosa, Grange and Mpies will play finals and with all the hype about Surfers would prob have said them to before yesty result, well done Mayne and have they thrown their hat in the ring for that final spot? It seems 6 side are fighting for one spot and looks like a couple of them wont challenge. As someone said in a earlier post, looks like top 5/6 pretty good and bottom 5 average.

Interesting, both Forbes and Trompf were in their teams best! who took the honors?

Forbes was terrific. Tromp was good around the ground. I dont think Forbes lost a tap all day. Hard to say who was better, Trompf obviously had a bit more support! Hawks ok in clearance stuff but disposal from there was horrible. Noosa far to classy and made them pay all day when they turned it over. The Noosa "press" was fantastic, they were the only side who played it properly last year, and they have just carried on this year. They have lost good players, but they play to a system which allows new guys to just slot in. Sandgate had 7x 19 yr old or younger players, and another 4 playing first game for the club. Fair to say taking on the premiers on flag unfurling day at Weyba was a pretty full on initiation to senior footy! I think they will improve as year goes on, some talented kids but lacking the class of the top sides it would seem. But take Dickfos, Walker, Fabian, Overington, Garton, Pettitt, Drew and co out of any side, you will be up against it. Hope they stick at it.

Pineapple Hotel Cup Round 1 Review

by Terry Wilson
Gold Coast Bulletin

There was one close call in the opening round when Mayne, last year's wooden spooners, upset Surfers Paradise by 13.5 (83) to 11.13 (79) at Sir Bruce Small Park on Sunday.

A sealing goal by 2011 player-coach Luke Faulkner enabled Mayne to end a 16-match losing streak that dated back to 2010.

In slippery conditions, the Demons fell into bad habits and coach Beau Zorko was unimpressed by the display.

“We did not carry out instructions, we were very undisciplined the way we played and towards umpires adjudications,” Zorko said.

“That's it in a nutshell. We were our own worst enemies and it had nothing to do with the weather.

“Mayne played with a lot more structure and have some quality targets up forward.”

Ex-Broadbeach midfielder Taylor Rolfe, half-back Ryan Dienjes and half-forward Simon Fenton were the pick of the Demons.

Ferguson nominated Goondiwindi recruit Corbin Sellen as his best, jokingly suggesting the “Goondiwindi Grey”, famous racehorse Gunsynd, is back in action.

Super veteran Andrew Housego, heading into his umpteenth season with the yellow and black, stood out at centre half-back and full-back Matt Jones did a good job on Demon forward Korey Fulton.

A downer for Mayne was the second-quarter send-off of Queensland representative Caleb Brown. This meant the Tigers played for 15 minutes a man down on the field.

PALM Beach-Currumbin have some sobering news for rivals in the new SEQAFL Division 1 competition following a demolition of Gold Coast rivals Coolangatta on Saturday.

After the Lions smashed the Blues by 18.21 (129) to 5.3 (33) at Salk Oval on Friday night, coach Daryn Cresswell revealed yet another key signing for the club.

Cresswell said centre half-back Jake Smart is due to arrive on the Coast this week link with last year's runners-up after a summer in the Darwin competition when he made the team of the year.

As the scores suggested, PBC were way too good for the Blues, although they took some time to adapt to slippery early conditions under the lights.

“The way we play conditions didn't suit, but the second half was much better when we were more direct,” Cresswell said.

Beau Runnalls, the small forward behind the 4 arrival of Smart he played with the big man at Wanderers kicked five goals for the Lions, whose best were evergreen James Drake, Sydney recruit Mick Atkinson and wingman Jesse Derrick.

Burleigh have plenty of work to do if their 9.9 (63) to 25.15 (165) loss to Wilston-Grange at Bill Godfrey Oval is any guide.

Away from fine efforts from on-baller Josh Perring, wingman Hugh Priest and five goals from big Cam Rowlands, there was not much for coach Zane Doubleday to enthuse over.

“There was a 15 to 20 minute window of the second quarter when they blew us away,” Doubleday said.

“We matched it with them in the third quarter and the start of the fourth. Then the floodgates just opened.

“I was very disappointed with some of our players, including some experienced ones, who dropped their heads, became undisciplined and let their frustrations show.”

For the Grange, however, things are looking good following the club's off-season recruiting drive.

Ex-Aspley pair Steve Brittain (four goals) and his cousin Dan Brittain (four), Brodie Shade (five) and Dan Collins (four) were all among the majors in the 102-point landslide.

The PBC and Grange results were only two of four hugely uncompetitive matches played out on Saturday when premiers Noosa smashed Sandgate by 18.10 (118) to 4.5 (29) at Weyba Road and Western Magpies slaughtered Springwood by 25.19 (169) to 9.3 (57) at Chelmer.

Former Brisbane Lions Anthony Corrie kicked 10 goals for the Magpies, who had Dominic Beer and veteran Chris Mihalopoulos in their best.

Springwood had Mitchell Vasterink and Dylan Witney tried hard for the outclassed Pumas.

At Weyba Road, big Danny Brewster, last year's leading goalkicker, booted seven for the Tigers and irrepressible rover Caleb Isles starred on the ball in the triumph over their 2010 grand final rivals.

Defender Adam Bovalino and ruckman Peter Trompf did well while for the Hawks, Brendan Forbes and Boyd Fuller were best.
