Why are we trying to turn him into a tagger , shouldnt he be playing as an offensive mid and we could use say Banfield as a defensive mid as he has the body and aggressive mind set
Rather even see Serong as HFW instead of Colyer (4 kicks v blues , he is always going to be a flop when real pressure comes on)
Also we have plenty of half backs so why not try Wilson on the wing where he can you his pace, carry and kicking as a weapon
Jlo needs to use the remaining games to mix it up and try and develop an attacking game style , no more 7 in defense and forwards not playing deep, Doggies game plan should be the blueprint

Play like the bulldogs...that's very Suma of you.

I think we're rated 17th in pressure acts, so the reality is we're a long way from the doggies style.

I don’t think we’re turning him into a tagger. I think he’s learning the tagging role to improve being a midfielder.
That's how I see it.

At the start of the season, in those quarters when our midfield looked like a sieve - it was Serong attacking the ball without awareness of his opponent and then not impacting the play while his opponent generated a clearance.

He wasn't accountable enough, not for us to be so beaten in the ruck.

When we started winning the ruck contest, that's when Serong should start hunting the clearance.

Serong is still learning the caper. Using him to play on the opposition best mid is a good way of fast tracking that. When he's ready, he'll be our Neale replacement.
I get that he is still learning, and I have no problem in coaches making players accountable. But at the moment it seems that the ask is to sacrifice his game as pretty much a pure tagger.

Yeah, it will only make him better. JL on the weekend said we have a long term plan and this would be part of it. I’d guess the plan for this year was to develop the players, play some finals for experience and begin our tilt for a flag next year.

It seems like a bit of a Josh Carr role. Tag a midfielder and work off and win your own possession, and they're both similar range draft picks, but I'm one who thinks its a step back.

Showed more star quality in the centre square finding the ball and being a clearance player. Seems so smart knowing which side of the contest to get the ball and how to position to be involved in those multiple clean chains of possessions out of the contest, and when it was his turn to deliver he had good decision making with his short or long kicks.

Serong is too good at winning his own ball to be used as a tagger.

If it's some sort of learning thing, fine. I'm no coach but I don't understand it.

His defensive run isn’t their yet. I feel like this is a tough learning year for him. He’s gone backwards a little IMO. His kicking to advantage and crisp handballs are a bit down. Hopefully another preseason and we release him to ply his craft without tagging.

So for instance Paddy Dow or Walsh are being taught the same way ? Come on let him just concerntrate on winning the football and then attacking like he did when he first started I dont buy into Jlo`s negative tactics Yes we need a tagger like Crowls and Banfield is best suited to that Weightman who was drafted in the same year for the Dogs seems to be going OK with out any of this so called learning

His form was waning at the time he was sent to tag. It was a way of giving him a focus to get that spark going again and to learn.

He's still developing. Different roles are likely to be beneficial. That said, it might be time to let him go onto something else.

Getting burnt by Walsh shows him the running capacity required and how far off he is. It's important not to get carried away with what young guys do well but expose them to and make them accountable for areas they're lagging behind in as well.
No better way to figure out what needs to improve than getting beat by the guy your asked to stop.

Different players have different running capacities, and I don't see those players as a match, but if Serong needs to improve it would have highlighted it for him.

So last week then?

Serong's had some very good games playing that defensive midfielder role. His work on Walsh on Saturday wasn't great, but given the jobs he's done on Parker, Dangerfield, Petracca and a few others I'm happy for him to stay in that role in the short term as his apprenticeship.

Plus if we tell Serong to play that ball-hunting role again I'm not sure it'll benefit our midfield in the short-term; Brayshaw, Cerra, Mundy and Fyfe are all too good to play that defensive role based on the logic to take Serong out of it and we'll be left with a midfield that isn't going to bring the defensive pressure we need.
