Setanta - What happened?

So I was away for the last 3 months of the season, when I left Setanta was on the way to a 50 goal season and was doing well up forward.

What happened?

Looked injured about the middle of the season, and subsequently played completely without confidence - probably when he should have been rested.

Looked like he'd rediscovered his early season form during the VFL final against Port Melbourne, so hopefully he carries that into next year.
 
Let's say that O'hAilpin can put together a good pre-season, doesn't have any injury concerns and starts playing the type of footy he was threatening to do early this year; do we have a place for him, Hendo and Waite up forward?

Does Waite go down back, to HFF or the wing?

Would Hendo be sent to the VFL or CHB?

Or do we think Ratten has completely ear-marked him for KPD and is content with Henderson and Waite as our KF's?

I am pretty sure the once in a lifetime trip wont happen again next year. Perhaps it was the fact that I went away that Setanta lost confidence....

I will make sure I stay until our GF win next year when Setanta dominates all year.
 
Toadman, I doubt a fully fit setanta next year will make the cut in the first 22...

His time is ticking..
 
Realized that Lachie will be 500x better than him, pissed off down to the pub and subsequently lost all knowledge that marking required two hands and not a fist.

was brought back after a bit out and Carlton got jack of his poor chasing and refusal to use his body and bring the ball groung. Pretty much put up the white flag against the bulldogs and didn't work hard, chase, do any defencive stuff and played like a sissy with no body work at all. That was if for him.

He was a positive in a restructured forward line early in the year when his repeat efforts and ground-level ball were outstanding. His form did taper with injury and a bit of confidence, so he just needs to recapture that early-season ability to compete.

...which I think he did by the end of the VFL season. People have been writing him off for years, and he's still here. I'm sure he'll make a good contribution next year.
 
He could be very handy with the new interchange rules if one of our rucks go down...would have him playing 2nd ruck/predominately forward over Hammer at the moment
 
Interestingly the club has flagged a return to defence for Carlos. In my mind he has shown he can play defence and he can play forward, he just needs to have the right match-up down back and he needs to keep his intensity up. I don't know to what extent injury played a role in his lack of intensity late last season but it was evident (quite contrary to his usual fire and passion) that he wasn't switched on. But with the sub rule leading to the likelihood of resting rucks forward and/or having a really tall forward to relief ruck it seems to me Carlos to defence makes sense - we simply have no-one else near his height with any defence experience.
 
A change of structure also hurt his confidence. We pushed all the fwds up the ground and kicked over their heads for the little guys to run at the open goal for a few games until everyone else worked it out. By then, he had lost confidence and looked like he didn't know if he should lead into space or keep his man pinned in the square.
Mixing brain farts with flashes of brilliance probably cost him once Waite and Hendo settled in.

This to me was the main reason why Carlos lost his spot, Waite and Henderson improved as the year went on as Carlos' form dipped.


It's hard to force your way back into a side then your form is dropping while the form of the guys you are competing with improves .........
 
Lachie will play all 24 (27?) games next season and do a great job. I'm calling at least 35 goals.

It's hard to see Setanta fitting in, especially if we pick up one or two KPP in this years draft.

The Waite/Henderson combo appears to working well, and you wouldn't want to disrupt that. He does provide a big body that could play on the bigger bodied forwards (Brown, Dawes, etc, etc) which we have had so much trouble with in recent years.

Needs to have a big pre-season.
