Have just noticed that Setanta has been dropped. I find this very dissapointing. I thought the rest of this season was for developing a team for the future and seeing who can play. He is tall exceptionally fast [ caught Ablett in a foot race and worried him out of the contest] and shows a touch of flair at times. He also has good closing speed in marking contests and spoils well.

On the down side he is still lacking heaps of confidence and after dropping a mark at the end of quarter one seemed to lose much of his run. After this he seemed more intent on just watching his opponent and not being positive in attacks on and for the ball.

My belief is that he is one of our few tall defence prospects. Why not encourage him with a promise of 4 full games at least and focas on really teaching him how to play. He has already proved that he can play at VFL level why not use the next month to give him a higher education?

Just no good enough I'm afraid:(
I hope he can prove me wrong and turn things around but the experiment seems to have failed! Will probably be delisted at seasons end to make room for a Jackson etc from the rookie list:thumbsu:

Experiment failed?

I think a lot of Carlton fans believe that he was stiff to be dropped at the first place.

Certainly won't be delisted.

He'd be on a 2 year contract after being elevated to the senior list last year so would have at least another year to prove himself.

just visiting.......

it seems like pagan has decided to play ohalepin as a 3rd tall defender. if that is the case then it is obvious that he wouldn't play against the bulldogs who only have one tall forward.

i think it is just a match up thing. if i were you guys i would want to persist with him. he has the potential to be a running 3rd tall defender. which is a good thing to have.

Agreed keano, we are too top heavy for the Dogs and we need more run. One of Kennedy and Setanta had to go. We are obviously hoping to stretch the Dogs up forward though.

Just heard on SEN that Setanta is in the seniors tomorrow replacing Russell.

weird replacing a small midfielder type with o'hailpin.
the blues will be far too top heavy tomorrow.

The other 2 emergencies were Prendergast & Bryan, so the options were limited. O'Hailpin would be more mobile than those 2.

marginally.
probably the least worst option tho.

You're obviously a glass half empty person. I am more of a glass half full type and therefore prefer to say that Setanta was the better option of the 3.

i would have gone Bryan.
O'Hailpin isn't ready for AFL level. might never be either.

We would definitely be top heavy if we went with Bryan instead of O'Hailpin. O'Hailpin has a far greater aerobic capacity than Bryan, which will be important against the fittest and best running side in the competition.

I went to the 'ants game today, just got back, AND i overheard Barry Mitchell at the end of the game. Russell has had the flu since thursday nite, and wont be in any physical condition to play, hence, Setanta in. IMO he should have NEVER been dropped.

Did O'Hailpin play today?

Mitchell said that on SEN when interviewed. Setenta in, Russell out crook.

Bullants won 8.6.54 to 2.9.21. Bryan kicked 4, fair effort in absolutely awful conditions. The rookies Flint (tremendous) and Jackson did very well as did Anthony Raso. Teague got 30+ possessions.

I am very glad that Setanta is baqck in. Lets hope he gets a decent run and that it is in the back half. He has a genuine enthusiasm to play imo and this combined with his athletic ability and height puts him ahead of many of the other fringe players at the club.

We desperatly need at least 2 of Bower, Hartlett and Setanta to become stable defenders. I firmly believe Setanta has the ability and needs confidence to fulfill his potential. Dragging and dropping him won't help. Supporting him with constructive direction will.

He really needs to learn from some experience and perhaps some beatings without fearing being delisted or dropped. Hawthorn did this with their young defender whose name escapes me earlier in the season. He had many bags kicked on him but still got about 6-8 full games at FB.

Lets take a risk with Setanta and see how he progresses. What have we got to lose at this point?

I agree, well put.A few people are saying he wont make it and should be de-listed.I think its far too early to make this call.Weve carried some no hopers for years so whats the rush to let him go so soon. Its not like weve got an abundance of tall defenders.
