Belated friendly advice for chicken owners in summer (been meaning to tell MP_ specifically for a while and keep forgetting):
  • The first REALLY hot string of days is when hens are at their most stressed. Like us, they get more used to summer as it goes on.
  • When it's constantly above 35, add a second bowl (or additional bowls depending on population) with water. Something shaped like a dog bowl is perfect. This will become their bird bath as chickens, like other birds, wet their feet and wings when it's hot to cool down. As such, keep an eye if you only use water bowls as they will fill with more sand than normal on the hot days as they will be used frequently as baths.
  • Mark any eggs collected on the really hot days with a pencil. When you go to use them in cooking, crack them into a bowl separately first as they can go off in the heat (you'll know by look and smell). Hens will lay much less in extreme heat.
  • Any eggs not laid in their hutch/coop needs to go to the bin sadly. In this heat and with insects so prominent in summer, it is no good for mammals (sorry doggos).
MP sorry if this you've had chickens before and this is repetitive drivel. You've possibly already had some strings of hot days so I'm the worst Sandra Sully imitator.

Don't apologise, it's great advice. We've only recently got chickens again after a hiatus of seven years. We've picked up plenty of tips in our chicken-less time.

Thanks for this, the chookies have been off the lay recently and it did co incide with the warm weather. I’ve now put a clam shell bath in their area , they also have a misting system in the coop , plus numerous water containers.

We’ve only been getting four eggs a day instead of five, turns out one of the chooks has a hiding place

So as some people may be aware I have a sentinel flock of chickens, they are provided by the government and are blood tested every week for mosquito borne diseases. Well one of my girls tested positive for the rare Murray valley encephalitis ☹️ which means she’s kicked out of the flock and needs to be rehoused. So I bought another coop and moved her to the other side of my house 😀👍

Don’t be sad Wosh , the chickens get no symptoms to these viruses, they just build up antibodies, this makes them the perfect animal to find out about these types of viruses as they aren’t affected. I’ve been learning to take their blood too

Will she have friends tho? Or is she like a leper now?

I’m actually only removing her when the vet comes, the other day she escaped to go back with them. But I need a second coop because I get new chickens in a few months and I will rehome all the old girls to the new coop. I’ll be the chicken man of mannum

I can’t give - 1 votes to the Phoenix ever again now 🤗

What is it with cats and laptops
I know I have no idea why he keeps doing it. I was trying to edit my photos and he's just sitting there to be annoying.

My friend has a broken laptop she sets up when she wants to use her laptop and her cat always sits on the decoy one

I might have to find my late mums laptop and let the cat sit on that.

My girlfriend wants to get a labrador puppy, not sure how the cat is going to handle the dog. I have in the past wanted to get another cat, and call it Holmes, as my current cats name is Watson. But I don't think Watson would handle another cat.

Our oldest child has claimed our 6 month olds couch that was an early Easter present. Don’t think we will be getting it back
