Johnstone to lead sponsor-seeking Saints
FORMER Port Melbourne VFL player Gary Johnstone will skipper SFL reigning premier St Kilda City this season.

Johnstone is captain of a squad that remains strong despite the departures of Mark Tasiyan, Steve Arvinitis, Danny Jacobs, Tom Farrelly and Chris Brannan.

Jay Bruno is back from VFL club Sandringham, and recruits include Mt Gravatt pair Gareth Dosser and Rowan Tilley, and Nicholas O’Brien from South Yarra, as well as coach Michael Stinear from De La Salle. Premiership players Myles Quinn, Ezra Poyas, Jack Grundy, John Stinear, Dylan Reiseger and Nick Porter are back seeking a second straight flag.

The Saints have spent much of the off-season rebuilding their administration under new president and former premiership captain Shaun Cotter.

Much has been achieved but the club is looking for a major sponsor.
‘‘Competing in division one of the Southern Football League is expensive — league fees alone cost around $30,000,’’ Cotter said.

‘‘ When combined with player uniforms, medical equipment, coaching staff and player incentives it starts to take on the budget of a small business.

‘‘Our ability to compete at the highest level is in part dictated by the generosity of of members, supporters and residents and businesses within the St Kilda community.

‘‘We’re looking for $10,000 from our major sponsor, which can be paid by instalments during the football season. In return we can provide the sponsor business with some fantastic exposure in the local community.’’

Details from sponsorship coordinator Ryan Webb on 0419 397 989 or email ryan@ stkildacity. com

The Saints will unfurl their flag at the first home match on April 16, against Clayton.

Is it correct that Parkdale beat Cheltenham by about 15 goals in the seniors and about 20 goals in the ressies? Now I know this a just practice match but it must be a concern to lose by that much to a D1 (4th division) VAFA club in both 1s and 2s. Also no Colts this year. What’s going on at the Rosella’s?

It was 8-9 goals in seniors with 15 players out (Parky were missing a few too I know). Parky also are hardly a D1 standard side with their inclusions, as Mordi can attest to.

Yep, Ressies was 20 goals but we basically fielded out clubbies side from last year. No big deal.

This year was always going to be difficult for Colts as it has been a gap age right through the Chelt Panthers (as is next year). We have 6-7 Colts eligible players, but have all indicated they wish to play senior football. Three will be in our senior side Round 1 I'd suggest.

We are going to be very young in both seniors and reserves but its a young mans game and we got found out too often last year for being old and lacking leg speed.

It's hilarious! I drifted on there a while ago to add an SFL followers perspective and the response was gold. It is going to take a while for them to come to terms with the fact that when all the dust settled and the independant board that was voted in sat back and looked at it objectively, the SFL had more to offer than the VAFA. It's a big :thumbsu: for the progress being made by the SFL.
Now that Doveton are sorted, any chance that the SFL can release the MSJFL draw? Ist round April 10.

Cheers. Seems the result I was given was embellished somewhat. Shame about the Colts. I know Cheltenham were a driving force in getting it up and running in the first place and have been a strong supporter of the concept.

dont think chelsea will be that high, haven't they lost a few good players?? I wouldnt say chelsea choked like st pauls did on some occasions. Stkilda have been the best side over the last 5 years. I'd suggest saints again this year but maybe it might be a close year..

they lost 1 game in the home and away after losing grand final the year before....city were getting overlooked people were saying stpauls and chelsea were gonna play off

Macleod beat Chelsea Heights by 7 points. Was level with two minutes to go but Macleod kicked a point and then a goal after the siren, which was beneficial to the overall result as the Macleod goal umpire paid full points on a ball that missed by over a meter half way through the last quarter. Perhaps the NFL let old men with life member badges goal umpire in their league - glad the SFL don't - was embarrassing to see it paid and I was just sitting with a mate behind the goals - awful.

Forgive me as I don't know too many names of players as I go up and watch my local mob on occasions when they play at home. I understand Beasy, Ogier and Roberts have moved on to other clubs or out to pasture so obviously CH were without them. No Smith or Fitcher up forward. Walsh played two-three quarters in the seconds, Flack played a quarter and a bit. Thwaites is rehabbing a knee, and I am aware three or four others were out. Again, sorry but don't know all their names.

CH's footy was played as if their key forwards were out there and they had no key forwards on the field, just #11, who isn't a key forward in reality. So balls to a leading target or deep to full forward were often swallowed by the Macleod defense.

Macleod were the better team on the day, a very even team but didn't look like they were missing anyone - certainly there wasn't much in their seconds that would threaten many in their ones, but plenty of improvement to come from CH I would imagine.

It's a practice match...despite the any goal umpiring decisions, ins & outs, etc etc....
As long as you get a good competitive hitout, try out some new plays and don't get any injuries, both teams will benefit.

Good luck for the season

Just calling it as I saw it - your man with the flags made a monumental error, practice game or no.

But you are correct, practice games are just that - no points, just an opportunity to get miles into the legs. I think too much is made of trial form. The only form worth paying attention to happens between the first and last rounds.

I ventured out to Narre Warren to watch the Fev show against Noble Park.
The standard of footy was fantastic and the crowd of at least 2000 was thoroughly entertained. I know that the crowd was bigger due to Fev but these 2 clubs have seriously big supporter bases. Noble Park arent far behind VFL standard.

I am old enough to remember playing against Narre, in fact it was only about 5 years ago that Dingley beat Narre in a practice match.

Noble Park won by about 5 goals in the end but they were pushed all the way. It occurred to me how far advanced these 2 teams are than what The Dingoes are. St.Kilda City of last year as good as they were wouldnt get within 10 goals of Narre Warren. The SFL has a long way to go before we can be measured against the MPNFL and the EFL.

Fair crowd for a practice match!

I ventured down myself as my nephews were playing in the ressies for Narre.(The two's was a pretty decent standard also.)

In the seniors Narre seemed to have a much smaller and younger side than Noble Park (Fev aside).Noble seemed to be able to bring on big blokes at will on and off the bench and also had a pretty decent ruckman in the two's who looked far too good to be playing 2nd's.

Good standard senior side and good job by Narre to hang in there with Noble Park. The only disappointing thing for me was a few of the Noble Park players trying to antagonise Fev from the very start of the match and continuing it throughout the game.

Made themselves look a bit stupid IMO.It was a practice match after all.Why would you bother! Good job by Fev to keep his cool for the large part of the game.Surprised he didn't lose it way earlier.

As far as SFL goes it is a work in progress. The most crucial thing IMO is getting the administration right which I believe they have done. The thing that will kick the comp off futhere towards other leagues is establishing a strong Colts competition and providing a pathway right through for junior players.

You'll find that comps like Eastern and MPNFL are a bit futher adavnced in this regards however SFL is on the right track.

How did no.43 go for Naree in the ruck?

Ginger haired fella? Looks the goods IMO.

Looked promising considering what he was up against. Noble Park seemed to have quite a few ruck options.

How old is he? He looked like a pretty young fella as did quite a few of the Narre players.
