TALENTED young forward Shane Kersten has suffered a minor setback just three weeks out from Geelong’s opening NAB Challenge clash with Collingwood on February 12.
Kersten, 20, sprained his foot at Cats’ training on Saturday after stepping on a teammate’s foot, leaving him on crutches.
It has been scanned, however footy boss Neil Balme says it’s not serious.
“He should be back in training next week,” Balme told K-ROCk Football.com.au
“It looked a lot worse than what it was.”
The West Australian had a stop-start 2013 after hip and hamstring problems in 2013 foiled any chance of an AFL debut last year.
However he still managed to kicked 41 goals in 13 games in the VFL, after 38 in 17 the previous year.
He is also coming off knee surgery in October that delayed his start to pre-season.

Havent heard of a sprained foot at AFL level for ages.
Easy to get over though.

I did it all the time.
And no, it wasn't from putting my foot in my mouth.

ha ha. It was always from turning.

depends on the grade and if it is a recurrence....your ankle ligaments must be spaghetti like mine, can roll mine on the slightest misstep.

and stop being a bully your dirty ole bully.

Oh for ****s sake. Can this kid please get an even go at it.
His knee was from a knock. His ankle is from an accidental sprain.

What I would give for him to just be able to play...
Pissed off right now! !!!!

Better that it happens now than in June though Daz.
I'm up to my eyeballs in Grammys load in and finally get a break. I log in here in my phone to see the latest and Shane's ankle is the first thing I see.
Dark and stormy for sure. But yes, now is better than June.

I got a badly sprained foot last week, cleared up after 2 days, he'll be right
So why report it and quote Neil Balme? I cringe when Balme is mentioned in the same breath as a report of injury.

Balme gets a hard time here.. He can not be explicit with his injury details for obvious reasons- they might not know the true extent of the damage, and they might not know the best current treatment, and they might not want the whole world to know anyway. If it's serious surgery like Menzel had, or TH, or TV, we get told appropriately. When it's difficult stuff like tendons, vagueness reigns supreme, because nobody really can ever be black and white about prognosis.
I am in the field, and have never been upset about Balme's explanations. He knows he's not medical, and until they routinely interview the medical staff, we just have to accept the status quo. Being supporters gives us no extra privileges in that area.

As far as a sprained foot goes, the diversity of injury here is no exception- it can be really quick, like recovery in a week, or can be as bad as a partial dislocation (Lis- francs injury, for those keen to look it up- suffice it to say Varcoe sustained that type and eventually got over it, pre being drafted by us). We have to hope SK has the really quick recovery type, which is MOST LIKELY.
