G'dy Cats fans, first off, congrats on the cup. Sorry to post on your board, but after reading of Mumford training well up here, I was wondering if you could give me an honest opinion of him as a player. I haven't seen much of him so would be curious for your thoughts. Thanks and good luck for this year!

I just read on the Sydney board someone saying he was 140kg playing country football :D

It's like the way Billy recalls his goal against the doggies, the distance he kicked it increases each year that goes past LOL.

Anyway he is a good second effort ruckman who will contest hard at ground level and will rack up the tackles.

Tap work only average. He's a big unit so that is something that may improve on with experience.

People talk up his around the ground work, and some people claimed his as a FF option , but personally I thought he dropped as many puds as Blake. He has more intensity than Blake sure and he made more contests, however ultimately I don't think he was any more effective.

I wasn't as big a fan of him as others were though.

I pretty much agree. He will be better this year after the year he had in 09 at the Cats. Tap work is a big issue that will need lots of work but he is got time to improve he is only young.

Mummy is still really raw and green but has potential, hope for your sakes and Mummy's sakes he can achieve it at Sydney. At Geelong he was a rookie trying to break into a premiership ruck duo, at Sydney he will be the number 1 by the looks of it, which could cause him to drop his intensity and work ethic.

Mummy was by no means a complete ruckman, as mentioned before his tap work needs work but around the ground he is solid and is willing and able to influence a contest.

He's a good ruckman, and with Jolly migrating to Collingwood, he's better than what you had (ie, he's better than nothing).

But is a million dollar ruckman?

That is a completely different question altogether.

(And you will miss Jolly.)

$$ Chaser.

Will need to improve his ruckwork to move out of the average player circle.

Second efforts, tackles, intensity..sounds very Sydney..cheers..:)

Thats over 4 years. Ok he's raw, but the third or fourth years could end up a bargain for us..could...While it must be hard to lose a promising player, when your list is stacked, it's nice to share:)

Hmmm, $$ chaser is a little harsh isn't it? Young guy gets a long contract offered him, no brainer isn't it. What could your team offer in return? ( yes, another cup). But our contract will set him up for life while giving him playing time, job security, regular playing time, and no veteran rucks to stiff him out of finals play. Now, I know Ottens is good, but mummy got you to the finals, to be dropped for the finals must've stung a bit..

Here's hoping he plays 150 games for you guys so you can draft his boys - they could go #1, albeit undeserving.

Yeah I know, it was horrible.

here's hoping, we haven't had a good father son in a while..or ever actually, in my memory. We had NOG, close as we have had..

In addition to many things said, his quickness & agility is top notch for a big bloke. Some of my favourite Mumford moments were after a clearance when one of our midfielders is running with the ball Mumford will be running along side calling for the handpass.

His ruck work will get better, it was not really bad or anything. He never had the opportunity to share the ruck duties with Ottens instead played a bunch of games as a solo ruck while Blake was in the VFL. When Blake returned our clearance stats went up dramatically which highlighted his ruck work just wasn't that good. But he was a 2nd year rookie who played a handfull of games that impressed a heap of people. I already miss the giant sausage.

"Sausage" seems to be the theme. If and when he starts to kick it, can we start with the "Hot Dog" themes?

I'll be keen to see how Shane goes with the Swans. I rated him as a player (great work ethic around the ground), could hold a mark and a reasonable boot. With improving ruck work he could be a big player (pun intended) for you guys. And with the amount of stoppages Sydney likes, he'll get lots of practice!

(I'd like for A. Goodes to get into his ear - then watch him develop!)

he will force the price of sausages to increase

he will do ok, - very competitive

highly rated, better than blake

Well in terms of second efforts, no doubt, and round the ground influence, perhaps so, but he cant hold a candle to Blake in general ruck work or the ever important, but often overlooked, tap out skills. Our clearances when Blake returned increased dramatically, in number and quality. So while not the most lovable character in Geelong colours, Blake does have his value. I must admit, I would like to see him taking more marks around the ground this year though.

I dont blame Mumford one bit for taking the move to Sydney. He MAY have developed into a preferred option for us but clearly that couldnt be guaranteed by GFC while Sydney could offer him top ( ridiculous? ) money and senior football. For Mumford it was a no-brainer really.

I hope he goes well up there.

He''ll never be as good as Cox, Sandilands, Jolly or Ottens but I think he could be every bit as good as Ben Hudson. He'll certainly be better than Chambers for you:D

To be honest, I think Sydney got a good one in Mummy, his improvement at Geelong was great. I believe he was our next No 1 ruckman when ottens retires. I don't blame him for taking the Sydney offer, but I wish he had been patient at Geelong where he could have been mentored by Ottens, I believe he has the ability and potential to play 150 games of AFL. Good luck to him.

This time last year , he certainly had no guarantee beyond 12 months. Ottens being injured opened a spot for a ruckman , giving someone more game time than he would normally have got. He maximized this , performing better than our 3rd ranked ruckman , West. He played well enough to get a future in football , well done to him.

While Ottens and Blake are around at Geelong, the truth is he would have had to improve significantly to become a regular member of our side in the next 2 or 3 years. From that point of view he has made a smart financial decision , but I think he will struggle to be any better than a 2nd or 3rd stringer.

Disturbing thing is he could become ANOTHER player who has come through Geelong in this period who plays regular football albeit for another club.

We have been doing an amazing job recently!

When you consider that Mumford was a mature age recruit from a country league, it's hardly surprising that the technical side of his game was/is lacking. I never really considered that to be a genuine deficiency, and expect that he'll improve dramatically if Sydney teach him well.

Most importantly, he moves well for a big guy, is aggressive, and is quite effective with his hands and body positioning once the ball has hit the deck etc.

IMHO, could be one of the better ruckman in the league within a year or two.

Our clearances when Blake returned increased dramatically, in number and quality.

Don't attribute that change solely to Blake. While Blake was out one of our best clearance players, Corey, wasn't playing in the center nearly as much to help cover for defensive injuries. There were other changes as well such as Mumford being solo ruck vs. blake and mumford combo. Yes Blake is better at the tap work but I would have loved to see Mummy get the same cast around him at clearances that Blake got, only then could we know the real difference.

I think you pretty much can soley attribute it to Blake. Ablett, Bartel, Selwood, Ling, Chapman are no slouches even if Corey isn't in the middle. For all Blake's deficiencies one thing he does for us is get us first use.
