Toby Greene's homelife was s**t. I know people who knew him growing up and the stories I've heard are pretty staggering. The poor bastard's home life bordered on third world sometimes.

Lachie Whitfield systematically getting out of a drug test is different. Trent Dumont was a pissed ****head. Ben Cousins is a minor tragedy but a story that shows the bad side of privilege.

Everyone is the result of what they've seen and who brought them up. It isn't that hard to understand. You have to look at why Shane Yarran is angry. Do you seriously not think Aboriginal men are no more troubled than white kids? Seriously, the cultures are so different you cannot even compare the generational confusion and outsidership of Indigenous people to that of white people. Fact is, more of them struggle in our world and the reasons for that, when you trace it back, are basically to do with the white invasion. Whether or not you were involved is irrelevant; we are Australians and we have to take pride in the culture who owned this place long before any pom came here. It is our responsibility to help try and cure the s**t that goes down.

Somehow, the cycle of incarceration doesn't really seem to be working. Hasn't worked in the last 50 years, and it still won't. This idea that jail will pull their head in is pretty limited. You have to look at differently – seriously.

Being aboriginal shouldn't be an excuse for bad behaviour but that also doesn't mean you can't be understanding of the extra difficulties many of them have and continue to face in society. Some people need extra support - we don't get to choose who our biological parents are or where we are born. Providing aboriginal people with specialised support isn't the problem (and certainly not a form of discrimination or racism), providing the wrong type of support is the reason the cycles continue.

I didn't write the dictionary, but, in the English language, calling for an entire race of people to be treated differently to others is labelled "racism". Whether you think treating that entire race differently is beneficial to that race or that the action rights a series of wrongs or that the other groups caused the racism first or whatever the case you paint might be, it is by definition racist.

Treating socially disadvantaged people differently isn't racist but that is not what was said.
