Are Collingwood looking to Shannon Cox to play a "Luke Hodge" type of role... and if so... can he pull it off?

I have been very impressed with him and he never gets caught always looks like his in trouble but gets out of it when Shaw comes back i think Cox will be even better and Clarke could move onto the wing

Don't think he has the hardness or bravery of Luke Hodge. But I think he has been a handy addition. As long as he can beat his and keep setting up play from the back he will stay in the team.

Would be top 3 in the team for skills and his awareness has just improved massive amount i never thought he could make it but his about 22 and still more improvement left in him

I think he'll be great linking up with Heater's penetrating kick when he returns. This will allow Harry to play more of a defensive roll on small to medium forwards and allow Toovey to be released to the VFL never to be seen again.

Cox in combo with Heater makes more sense because Heater gets it some way off the boot. Put Anthony down back as well when Rus comes in so we have two good kicks out of defence to Daisy and Clarke on the wings.

There's no way I can agree with putting Anthony down back at this stage. He was only permanent forward on Saturday that looked likely. He can take a contested mark and kicks for goal beautifully - why would we risk losing that?

Why would you take Anthony out for a bloke we dont even know will make it back into the team

Anthony is kicking goals could you imagine how good he will be when he is finnally the 3rd tall behind Rocca and Cloke which thats how i see him playing his career as the perfect 3rd tall

I really wish people would get over this Rusling love crush people make out his a walk up start no where near it

I didn't think he'd make it.

Now I feel he is very important going forward.

Things change quickly.

This is why we shouldn't write of young players.

Coxy displays genuine flair and poise in his rebound from defence. He has a Pendles-like quality to avoid being caught with the ball and sems to have extra time to hit a target.

Nowhere near as hard as Hodge, but he shows plenty of promise as a creative rebounding defender.

Cox always had ability though, we knew that. It's just that his application and conditioning was questionable. I'm not surprised that he has started to show the makings of a successful footballer but equally would not have been surprised if he drifted off at the end of this year never to be seen again.

No doubt we are looking at to develop in this role.

However, if he is named, then we cannot also name Goldsack, Brown, Presti, Harry and Maxwell.

That is 6 talls down back. Where is the run???
Well harry, cox provide most

maxwell provides some and goldsack in form provides drive

The actual issue is who takes the small forwards that kill us

Brown & Presti are the two talls. Maxwell can play third tall if needed as can Goldsack and Harry.
In fact I don't know how much we'll see Maxwell down back this season. I think he's going to be playing a role similar to Max Rooke's, where he can play anywhere on the ground and will give us hardness in that position. If we need him to go down back he can, but I don't think he'll spend that much time down there.
Cox is not overly tall and doesn't really play as a tall defender. His one on one defensive skills aren't great. He does attack the ball hard and takes opposition players on. This is not a skill that Brown and Presti possess and Goldsack and Harry have certainly not mastered it yet.
There's definitely a place for Cox in the team I feel. If anyone is to drop out at this stage it has to be Goldsack.

OBrien Presti Maxwell/Goldsack

Shaw Brown Cox

Really depends what role Maxwell plays but i would like to just see him sit in a back pocket and defend then we wouldnt need Goldsack and could have another Midfielder in our team

The ideal back 6 against a traditional 2/3 tall forward line probably would be:

B: Maxwell, Presti, O'Brien
HB: H.Shaw, Brown, Cox

Maxwell to play on the 3rd tall or a smaller player. O'Brien to shutdown most dangerous small whilst providing a bit of rebound.

Brown and Presti on the CHF/FF

H.Shaw and Cox rebound (with H.Shaw possibly being more defensive).

Against a forward line with no real forwards one of Presti/Brown will have to be moved out of there for Goldsack/Toovey. Goldsack is the most versatile in terms of the fact he can do all the roles of the back 6 (but doesn't excel in anyone area) although he's not quite as tight on smalls as Toovey.

We incorrectly judged that Adelaide would stack their forward line with 3 talls (Walker, Stevens and a resting ruckman Tipett or Maric). With no Burton and all their small forwards becoming mids it also left Goldsack/Maxwell without proper match ups and O'Brien was out of sorts.

We are basing this off 1 game? His skills are nowhere near the top three players in the side.

I was impressed with his game last weekend but it could just be a flash in the pan for all we know.

I know because I said if Rus came back into the team send Anthony down back - iron logic, can't top it.

Anthony can bag seven and then 0 then 2. He takes a good grab and his kicking at goal is obviously the competitions best, but in terms of the whole forward structure the Rus provides something very exceptional in his leads and usually puts light between his opponent and himself, whereas Anthony always looks like he's wearing a flesh suit. I don't doubt his conversion, but his capacity to win the contested situation / marks as often as I think Rusling will be able to.

Good kicking out of the back line is at a premium considering we get some much of our drive from there - weekly abbeherations excepted.

If Rus doesn't work, sure, ping Anthony back in there.

Cox's skills are very very neat but I wouldn't call them sensational. He is also prone to a few errors by being lazy and just not assessing the situation (for example a kick around his shoulder to a teammate he may see as alone is kicked too high and it's easy for an opponent to pick it off). Where he is very skillful is his ability to hit the target underpressure and when in awkward situations (for example he can hit a teammate on the chest when tracking back).

Who knows.
One thing I know, he is not and will not ever be in our best 22.

I think that statement answers the last question.

glad your not in charge
would you be happy with the status quo
just making the finals, being competitive, f##k that
we need to improve and cox definitely has upside
I think he actually has the potential to take his game to a new level, top 5-10 at the club, if he could make the switch to the midfield in the next 12 months he could be a real attacking weapon for us

Can't agree with that! So far this year (NAB cup & round 1) he's been in our top 3-4 players. As it stands, it's his spot now until he loses it. Definitely best 22.

Strikes me as one of those players that needs to be playing senior football to really find commitment in himself to keep his diet right, up his fitness and what not.

Looks as though he becomes disheartened easily if lagging in the 2's.

Anyhow I'm glad he is starting to show something, because it looked as though last year he was going to be another one of those players who had all the talent but would make a quick exit from the game.

Cox is playing well atm and is reliable down back. Would be good to see both him and Shaw rebounding off half back. The backline should line-up as follows

Harry O Presti Maxwell
Cox Brown Shaw
(With Goldsack on the bench.)
My only worry is we've got no one to play on the small forwards. Toovey is terrible and not up to it.
