Was clearly his intention. But it's very rare to see it paid. I found it amusing that when it happened up the other end it was allowed.

Jee, tonight brought back memories of 2004. It really did. Undersized backman being easily shoved around bigger opponents. No forward structure after 1/4 time, every 3rd kick going straight to a St.Kilda player.

Inconsistency just gives ya the shits doesn't it. Millionaires one week.............:thumbsd:

When Burton pushed him out of bounds you mean?

Maric > Griffin.

I'm not sure what you're on Jenny, but can I have some?

Ivan Maric was absolutely superb for a young ruckman. 9 Possesion, neat skills, a couple of nice grabs, 4 tackles and 15 hitouts.

Not sure what more he has to do.

I didn't say he wasn't good, just said I am still not sure he's as good as we've had from Griffin. I am sure we'll see more of him though. LOVED that mark! :thumbsu:

Oh for god sake, port beat brissy up there with a ridiculously lopsided free kick count. The umpires didnt make us lose this game, the fact we can't hit a target did....

Would you admit that we have a free kick problem though? Tonight will only serve to put us even further infront for most frees against.

Agree - Maric was very composed....Griff will be a star but he still has alot of work in front of him

His production is far exceeding that of Griffin.

Bad result but brilliant game from Knights - on way up to being a very good player. He was really outstanding when other highly rated youngsters like Reilly and Douglas went missing. Thought Maric was good in ruck as well, easily relegates Griffin to the emergency list at this point. Cheers

Oh and Rutten was being KILLED by Gehrig anyway, which was really disappointing. Rutten was phenomenal for the first 7-8 rounds, what’s happened since then? Just seems to be really struggling when opponents lead hard from the square.

Player reviews:

Bock: Looked extremely dangerous early, but as is the case most weeks he struggled with injury.

Burton: Kicked 2 goals but my word he is ridiculously out of touch. Poor game.

Doughty: 25 possessions, maybe 5 were effective.

Douglas: Purple patch in 2nd term, otherwise barely sighted. Was impressed with his work without the ball though, tackling, blocking ect.

Edwards: Started hot then tagged out of it by Baker.

Goodwin: Great as usual around the packs, was being held onto all night by L.Fisher.

Hudson: Brilliant effort and some of his taps were marvelous.

Johncock: Did some great work in heavy traffic, but his disposal was iffy tonight.

Knights: Great first half but had a few poor kicks after the main break though.

Maric: Very impressive. 9 possessions, 4 marks, 15 hit-outs. Very promising future.

Massie: Poor match-up for Massie and Craig was too slow to react. Not his fault.

McGregor: Played out of position and was awful.

McLeod: Superb run from defence, probably our best despite a few clangers.

Reilly: Best user of the ball in our team, ran hard and provided great rebound.

Ricciuto: Body’s had it but his last quarter was a great captain’s quarter.

Rutten: Really struggled before going off injured.

Shirley: Tagged Dal Santo I believe, did a good job if that’s the case, wish he tagged Havey or Hayes though.

Stevens: Not good, not bad, somewhere in between.

Thompson: Gave everything he had; 24 possessions and 7 tackles. Another very solid game.

Torney: Struggled a bit after last week.

van Berlo: Lowest possession count of the year but his usage was first class and did a few clever things in heavy traffic.

Welsh: Disappeared every now and then but kicked 3 goals and had a few assists. Decent game.

I am not sure who I was angrier at... our players, their players or the damned inconsistant umpiring

We started shakily, but by the end of the first quarter, looked like the team that flattened Hawthorn last week. At quarter time we apparently swapped our players for a bunch of look a likes . What the bloody hell are we doing MENTALLY with our players???? We cannot afford to go missing mentally like we are every other week. These boys need to be read the riot act because, although I know they try... they are either thinking they are better than they are (and turn off the heat), or thinking they arent. Either way it's not good enough. Lucky to make the 8 now. Top 4 spot is all but gone. :(

I thought Scott Welsh played an awesome game tonight - kicked a couple and assisted in at least three others with his defensive pressure. McLeod, Goodwin and Edwards were brilliant in the first quarter - but after amassing the possessions they did last week probably ran out of fuel by the 2nd. I thought Thommo and Radar had possibly the worst games Ive seen - the clanger count was massive. Massie tried his best but was given a bath by Riewoldt. Rutten was beaten long before he was injured (as he always is by a leading forward). We desperately missed Bassett tonight. Douglas did a few good things but certainly not the spectacular. Knights was brilliant for most of the game (went quiet when everyone else did in the second) - but he's going to be a star that lad. Roo.... my god his body must be a mess. Kicked two crucial goals... but cannot chase if his life depended on it. That is not a good scenario :( VB was serviceable (much better than last week, but not up to his best). Maric's mark was brilliant and I saw a couple of hit-outs, but again, I don't know if he is better than Griffin. Huddo tries hard but geez he's struggling. Anyone notice he rarely kicks the ball?
Jen, Ill wait for WWs Good Bad or Ugly but I feel you have missed the mark ona few here

Yes you are right Douglas wasnt spectacular...but what impressed me was his poise and how purposeful he was in his disposals and attack on the ball.

Welsh was lively but maybe my definition of awesome is different to yours. Was good not awesome

Huddo struggled??? I had him as BOG in the 1st half. And VB was strong in the 1st half

Maric is still learning the game and will only get better.

Im actually proud of the game from the boys. I thought we were gone and buried with the injuries we copped, but we fought it out and in the end were unlucky not to take the points. A lesser club would have gone belly up.

so what did you think of the 2nd qtr when our midfield got pantsed before the injuries ?

Griffin and Maric are different types, both have shown a bit and Maric was very good tonight but has to perform for a little while longer to catch up with Griffin, who on the other hand simply needs a rest. The guy is lankier than me and playing AFL.

I missed your opinion on Radar Jenny. I couldn't agree with you less.

He was great. Certainly one of the very few that actually used the ball well tonight.

Relax big fella, im just not letting my rage get the better of me when i post after a loss. Ive seen many a post that people would regret reading again in these after match threads.

We lost control in the second quarter, theres no doubt about it, but its rare to dominate a game from start to finish. We were still very much in the game, and if wed not lost truck, we might have snuck it. Credit to Saints at the same time, they played well after quarter time. Im still proud of the boys, because i think it says alot about the character of the team that they didnt drop their heads and get blown away like alot of other teams would have.

I would admit our players have an issue at the moment with giving away free kicks. Which happens when you are second at the ball and continually put yourself, and others under pressure with poor disposal. Yes we have ALWAYS had a problem with being on the receiving end of poor umpiring the entire time i have watched our boys which is since 1991 this has been the case. But to throw up poor umpiring as a reason we lost tonight is ridiculous. Why does a free kick count have to be equal?

Our disposal, being hit hard by injury and losing another part of our spine and a couple of walking wounded was why we lost... Oh not to mention just enjoying a 4 goal lead at quarter time.

One thing i cannot question tonight is the boys heart, endevour or courage that was there 100%

We didn't lose as a result of the umpires, in reality we put in a pretty admirable effort considering the strength and height of the saints forward line and how depleted our tall backs were with bassett and rutten. However, its hard to comprehend the logic in the maguire decision. A ball that maguire could easily have attempted to mark was deliberately punched across the line with two fists. Deliberate out of the bounds every day of the week. The umpires make close defeats like that so much harder to take!

lol what is it with u crow and port clowns that complain about the umpires all the time geez never heard anything when u were winning premierships,as i always say bad umpiring happens across the board every side cops it at different times but it evens out so stop crying and maybe u should think u turned the ball over tonight to easy and were lucky that it was only 2 pts :D

We're close to a top 4 team, and we get the least frees in the comp.

It's a bit unusual.

I guess I’m the only one who sees it this way but I wouldn’t have paid that deliberate against MaGuire at the end. Of course we all know what his intent was but he’s a defender and he’s diving to spoil the ball, let them defend!!! Correct decision.

I was going mad at the umps all night but I had no problem with this decision.

Its consistency though. If you are going to ping Massie because he didnt realise he had more time than he had, you need to do the same thing there.

Agreed

Get over it

Why then does it have to be equal after 16 years?

I had a few ticks against Douglas, and was quite happy with what I saw. It wasn't the spectacular 30+ possession and 7 goals everyone's been raving about in the SANFL though. ;) My statement about Welsh is this. Everyone (including me) bags him for getting his goals when the pressure is off. Well tonight he got them when we needed them AND he assisted in at least three others. He is our leading goal kicker, we couldn't ask for more from him than his performance tonight. I love Huddo to bits and as I said he played his heart out (as he always does) but I was getting a little frustrated that his first reaction when he gets the ball is to handball particularly when there's not always someone around to receive it. I'd like to see him kick it occasionally.

Thommo was a funny one - he had a lot of the ball (mostly in the first quarter) but he made some uncharacteristic clangers tonight I thought and his disposal was not as clean as we expect from him. Radar hardly got the ball - or if he did, I didn't see it! (Mind you I was yelling at the TV a fair bit :o).

In response to Drummond:

* I thought Dogga worked very hard and was happy with his game.
* I thought Stiffy had a quiet game by his normal standards. Would have liked to have seen him moved up forward.
* Absolutely disagree with your thoughts on Radar.
Agreed with most of the others.
