THE simmering four-decade feud between Kevin Sheedy and Robert Walls has erupted again, with the Essendon coach yesterday lashing his former opponent and rival over his constant criticism of AFL coaches.

Sheedy said yesterday Walls lacked credibility after two of the clubs he coached went "out of existence" and claimed his two-year stretch at Richmond was a "waste" of time.

The Essendon coach's explosive outburst came after Walls spent a week casting a withering eye over the supposed failings of a raft of AFL coaches.

Walls questioned whether Essendon had a game plan under Sheedy, said Mark Thompson and Chris Connolly would likely be sacked if their sides did not finish in the top four, and accused Dean Laidley of lacking the tactical nous to coach the Kangaroos.

He also labelled Denis Pagan selfish for recruiting experienced players to win games and said Mick Malthouse should have achieved more given Collingwood's riches.

But it was his claim that Sheedy spent too much time playing an ambassadorial role and not enough coaching that saw the veteran coach hit him with both barrels.

"Clearly, in the end, two of his clubs (Fitzroy and Brisbane Bears) have gone broke and are out of existence," he writes in an open letter to Walls in today's Sunday Herald Sun.

"Possibly one of his weaknesses was that he only wanted to coach the team, not build the organisation. I don't think he sees that when he writes about other organisations.

"It's amazing that you can win a premiership and get into another Grand Final like he did at Carlton, and still be sacked two years after winning the flag. What does that say about him? What happened there?

"Robert's two years at Richmond were just a waste. I don't know whether he left Richmond with a future. So he has to be very careful when he starts telling coaches what and how and when they are going to coach.

"In the end, maybe Carlton and that one premiership saved him. Robert has become a big negative and I think people are getting sick of it."

Two of the game's dominant figures, Sheedy and Walls have been at loggerheads since they started playing for arch-rivals Richmond and Carlton, respectively, in 1967.

They also started as senior coaches in the same year, 1981, and their on-field battles turned into coaching box rivalry, with several heated incidents fanning the flames.

When Walls – just as rugged as Sheedy on the field – said in 2001 that Bulldog Tony Liberatore should retire amid allegations he punched Matthew Knights, Sheedy accused him of gross hypocrisy.

It started a public feud that continues today despite Walls once barracking for Essendon.

"Robert coached 39 games of football for Richmond, but someone like Kevin Morris or Tom Hafey would have been a better coach of the Tigers than him," Sheedy said.

"I have never done a drill like he did with Shane Strempel (at Brisbane) where the team belted the crap out of him with boxing gloves.

"I have never left a note on my president's car (Brisbane's Noel Gordon) telling him to get stuffed for parking in my car park."

Since his last club job Walls has been on several coaching sub-committees and was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame last year.

Sheedy said Walls needed to be more constructive in his criticism.

"He won his first premiership after seven seasons, and then was sacked. Twenty years later he is still bitter about it," Sheedy said.

"At least Tim Watson sugar-coats his hand-grenades from the cubby house.

"Robert doesn't pull his punches. And when you do that, sooner or later people will start punching back. Kick-to-kick can be off the field too, Robert."

Bravo Kevin. :thumbsu:

About time someone with credibility called out this fool.

Sheedy, is 100% correct. Walls is a bitter football moron. First time ever I've agreed with Sheedy outright. lol.
Let's hope the football world (and CH. 10) take some notice!

I could not agree more with Sheedy. Walls never shuts up when commentating Essendon games about how they have underachieved while Sheedy has been coaching. I do not think that anyone could challenge the fact that Walls was a good player and a pretty coach, but as Sheedy argues, he needs to put aside grudges and be more constructive in his criticisms. Walls would do well to remember that Carlton has not exactly performed that well over the past decade.

You've gotta love Sheeds.

He tells it like it is, and commands respect.

Robert Walls, on the other hand, is nothing but a gutless sniper, and commands nothing but disdain.

Well done Kevin.:thumbsu:

Bravo JD, doesn't involve the Blues ;) . Only messing with ya.

Great article by Sheeds, Walls seems to be completely losing the plot, the footy was so much better last night not having to listen to him crap on. The end seems to be coming quickly for Walls, he has lost touch with the game and the fans.

What was that about Walls arguing that he had more coaching experience because he paid the best and fairest at one of the struggling clubs as they couldn't afford it? I had a quick flick through the paper this morning and caught that little bit.

What a load of crap!

Walls achieved something Sheedy never did in coaching a struggling club in the Brisbane Bears in a Rugby state to a near upset of Carlton in the 1995 Finals. The only club Sheedy has coached is an established power of the like of Essendon, Collingwood and Carlton where there has never been a shortage of talent and money. Michael Voss acknowledged that Walls help set up the Bears and put them on the path to becoming the Brisbane Lions.

I think Sheedy is still bitter that Carlton kicked a record score against Richmond and Walls kicked six goals.

No, you just dropped a better footballer in Derek Kickett to select a thug in Wallis and that thug knocked out one of Carlton's best players in the 1993 Grand Final. I think Sheedy should play the man not the ball and quit coaching to take up plumbing again. At least Walls walked away from coaching the Tigers when he was past it and not talking about flags when you're a rabble.

Sheedy, it's time you quit and and walked off into the sunset to take a few more wine tours.

Sheedy took over the coaching at a time Essendon was going through a Pathetic stage. He never had it handed to him on a silver platter.

Sounds like to me Walls is having a bit of a whinge at why he wasnt as succesful as Sheedy has been. All this stuff about not knowing what its like to coach a club with an owner who wants to shut you down every week or having 90% of your players who are homesick is just a cop out.
Walls knew the situation the club was in when he took on the job and when he didnt have the success he uses these petty excuses as reasons for lack of success. The guy is an absolute tool of the highest order.I hope ch10 get rid of him as his negativity and views have become a joke

For someone who has been around footy for such a long long time, Robert walls is a football moron! The man is a football fossil, and channel 10 need to put him back on the senior's pension list, completely lost touch with reality. His rambling's are no longer wanted and i've said it before, i'll be watching games his commentating on with the volume down!

Never thought i'd say it being a Hawks man but... Good on ya Sheedy!

Kickett was out of form, lacking match fitness and was lacking the right attitude, Sheeds if given the opportunity would make the same decision again, he picked a team to win a GF

I worked at a function earlier this week where he made comments just like the ones in the article. Sounded like he was enjoying bagging Walls. Particularly the training incident. Salmon was laughing

What has Carlton's last decade have to do with the argument at hand? For the record he's also criticized Pagan despite being a blues supporter.

This embarrassing "four-decade feud" is reaching biblical proportions.

Hang on! You obviously weren't around in the 70's when Essendon was a rabble. When Sheedy took over in 1981, Essendon had not won a flag since 1965 and hadn't made the finals since 1973.

Essendon then, under Sheedy, made a Grand Final in only his 3rd season at the club. After that disappointment, we the preceded to go back-to-back in ''84/'85. Sheedy is only now experiencing his equal worst period as Essendon coach ('87/'88 we didn't make the finals). Under Sheedy, Essendon has never missed the finals for three consecutive years. Thats an amazing record.

In the early 80's, Essendon were Calton's and Collingwood's poor 3rd cousin ... Sheedy is partly responsible for Essendon being a modern-day power.

"At least Tim Watson sugar-coats his hand-grenades from the cubby house.

Not exactly sure what the cubby house is but that's funny.

There is something sad about Walls. He probably should have exited public life when his wife was diagnosed with cancer. He has a heavy heart and it doesn't always come out right.

Oh and re: Walls. Thank you SEN. No longer will i have to listen to his drivel on 3AW. The sooner The Bearded Clam is removed from the airwaves the better we will all be.

Kickett had played every game for the year, so he was hardly lacking match fitness.
Kickett is still bitter to this day, shows his attitude was right on the money - then and now.
Form is temporary.

Form is temporary.

Kickett had spent much of the previous 4-5 games on the bench, he was lacking match fitness.

Just because Kickett is bitter doesn't mean his attitude was spot on or it was the wrong decision, Kickett thinks he deserved to play, Sheedy thought otherwise.

Dropping Ron Andrews is a decision he regrets, gave the Hawks a huge confidence boost for the '83 GF

I've lifted this post from the "Robert Walls is a twat thread" on Bay 13 as it's probably more relevant here.

Since The Age are lifting content from BF, they might want to reprint this great post from Barrabus.

Robert Walls is in a rich vein of form this week, displaying much of that original thought that we all know and love.

March 6, Sheedy behind the eight ball in his 27th season, goes on about how this could be sheedy's last seaason, quotes his recent winning percentages.

March 7, Thompson's career on the line if Cats miss top four, goes on about how this could me Thompson's last season. Says that based on his below 50% winning rate, he's lucky to be coaching.

March 8, Now, for something different? No. Laidley a step behind the game's thinkers, goes on about how this could be Dean Laidley's last season, and goes on about his 46% winning rate. I think I'm seeing a pattern.

march 9, Time is now for the Dockers and Connolly, goes on about his 56% winning rate, says despite this, if they don't finish top 4, it might be the end of him.

So. Congratulations to Robert Walls, for publishing pretty much the same article, 4 days in a row. And, yes, he is a twat.

Walls' commentary ceased being constructive years ago and he has not found anything positive to add to general footballing views and the community in years. Sheedy has delivered a timely bump that hopefully can awaken the greater opposition to Walls in the non-parochial footballing public who appreciate commentary that either adds value or entertainment to our game. We all have our favourite commentators but I cannot believe that there is much support for the snipping style he is unable to shrug. Read his article on laidley to exemplfy this. It went beyond informed opinion to being in the nasty realm for no real gain.

Good on you Sheeds

The Sheedy/Walls argument has its roots in their playing days for sure but incidents since add fuel to the fire. One forgotten matter l believe was in Walls prediction for the 2000 Grand Final shown as part of the Channel 10 news on the Friday night before the game. After a dominating season with only one loss Walls went through both the Essendon and Melbourne teams line by line and in almost every position described how the Melbourne player would win the contest. It was like every Melbourne player was going to play at the top of his form and the Essendon player just wouldn't be able to cope. I was staggered. It looked to me liked biased reporting of the highest order with no consideration on how Essendon could win. I am still waiting for Channel 10/Walls to admit that what was shown was the second of two previews Walls had done earlier in the week predicting how each team would win. Some boffin at Channel 10 had simply put on the wrong tape! Surely Walls couldn't tip Melbourne to win so convincingly after the season Essendon had?
