KEVIN Sheedy has given the strongest indication yet in the current contractual negotiations that he wants to continue coaching at Essendon.

As his former club Richmond lurches from crisis to crisis, Sheedy yesterday all but ruled out a return to Punt Rd to replace the ailing Danny Frawley.

Speculation about the future of Frawley, and the insistence from Tigers supporters that the club go after its famous former son, has once again dragged the Sheedy-Richmond fairytale into the headlines.

But Sheedy, who was sacked by the Tigers this round 25 years ago, yesterday indicated his sojourn at Windy Hill would likely stretch beyond the magical quarter of a century.

Asked yesterday if he needed the challenge of a new club at 56, he said: "The challenge is winning five premierships. It always has been."

A fifth flag would propel Sheedy past contemporaries David Parkin, Allan Jeans, Tom Hafey, Ron Barassi and Leigh Matthews.

Sheedy yesterday admitted the Tigers had not approached him to coach in 2005.

"I do not know Clinton Casey, and I can easily talk to anyone, but I don't know them," he said.

Undoubtedly a target – perhaps the target – for Richmond's headhunters, president Casey and football director Greg Miller, Sheedy let it be known that the Tigers should seek a younger coach.

"Richmond will know what to do," he said.

"And the best thing to do in life is support your club."

Sheedy has been offered a two-year deal by the Bombers, but he is yet to agree to it.

He hasn't even discussed the contract offer with his long-time manager Brian Ward because of various personal reasons.

"We will sit down and chat soon," Sheedy said.

"I will make a decision somewhere in the next month or two."

Asked why it would take him so long to decide, Sheedy said: "There are other things to think about, and I want to make sure in my mind and my family's mind.

"If you really want to know, I haven't even sat down and spoken to my wife about it and my kids."

Sheedy told the Herald Sun in March that he had to decide if he was the right person to coach Essendon beyond this year.

On the field, Sheedy yesterday was satisfied after his Bombers, led by James Hird, beat off several Collingwood surges to run out winners by 33 points.

Hird won his third Anzac Day Medal for his best-on-ground effort.

The win leaves the Bombers at 3-2 after five rounds, and they play the dangerous Sydney at the MCG on Saturday.

"We've been behind them in the last year and a bit, so hopefully we can put up our hand and perform near our capabilities," Sheedy said.

Essendon will have midfielders Mark and Jason Johnson available for selection, as well as Damian Cupido, who played in the VFL on Friday night, Mark McVeigh and Marc Bullen.

"Three will come back, but not all of them will be in the side," he said.
