What a great opportunity Melbourne has in securing Sheedy next year.
If it's a straight swap, Daniher for Sheedy, we can pick up a coach who could give us some immediate benefits and help set ourselves up for the next 10 -15years.
The immediate benefit is the change of coach in itself. Look at what happened in Daniher's first year when he took over from Balme - we made the prelim. final in '98.
Then there is the man Sheedy himself. What a marketable commodity. Much more so than Daniher has ever been for the club. Take the opportunity to grow our membership and sponsorships. And if we have some good performances straight off the bat under Sheedy, the growth could be significant.
Sheedy has a contract with Channel 7 (I think I'm right on this), so the club would get the benefit of his exposure on the major footy channel. Let's use him to our advantage.
He is a seasoned campaigner who isn't afraid to get the right support people around him in the footy dept.
The AFL would love us to get a proven name rather than an untried as it proves we are still persuing stability, which we have had to do as part of getting the $$ from the CBF.
And here's the best part. We give Sheedy a 3 year contract, which gives us 3years to put into place a strategy to find Sheedy's successor to take us past 2010 and beyond. And if Sheedy's doing the job, renew his contract, if not, we've had 3 years to plan for his replacement.
By then we would have our new facility at Olympic Park, some sustained on-field success, 35,000 membership base, heavy duty corporate sponsorship, and the club postioning itself to stay competitive and relevant well into the future.
