As some might know I've been slowly working on building my own datebase for shield matches in my spare time. It's still very much WIP.

As we know selectors generally don't like to pick a player based on just one good season and you need to put a few good seasons together to get up the pecking order.
That's why I think the three season average is useful because it indicates the record over a decent period of consecutive seasons that are recent enough to still be relevant.
You can also compare the result of an individual season against the three season average and see if it's a massive outlier compared to his previous record.

Some players of course still have records that are massively distorted by a single season. If we take out the 2013/14 season for Cameron Bancroft, which I think we're entitled to do since it was his debut season and he has greatly improved since we see that his average jumps by nearly 10 and he no longer has so many ducks.

I've gone for every player who has scored over 500 Shield Runs in this period plus a few other notable players for comparisons sake.

As one can expect it's dominated by the players who are regular shield players.
Bancroft, Handscomb and Head are the three youngsters on this list and unsurprisingly they are three of the highest rated young batsmen in the country.

Ferguson was probably pushing for selection before his injury.

And for the averages

To be negative it really is remarkable how poor Finch has been in the longer format despite being a fixture in our limited over sides. Even in short form cricket you would think with the exposure to international bowlers he would have a better record than that. Clearly one of the best shorter form batsman in the country but would have thought that some of his confidence would have been transferable.

On the positive never realised Nevill's batting was impressive stats wise. I know it has been boosted by a couple of huge scores, but averaging anything over and around 50 is outstanding.

To be fair to Finch he's barely played over the last two seasons because of the World Cup and the tour of NZ.

He was already a semi-regular international player by 2013/14 but I'd image that he'd do better now for the reasons you outline. That said there are many batsmen you'd have in front of him when it comes to test prospects

The top 10 runscorers is just about as depressing as the top 10 wicket takers and batting wise there is not the same injury excuse as with the bowlers. Really need a few young talents to start to step it up a notch.

Bancroft, Handscomb and Head?
