We are going to have some serious forward stocks in a few years if everything goes to plan...

One of these days we're going to develop an A-class ruckman as well. It may not be in my lifetime, but one of these days... :D

You don't rate Max.

Is that a question a statement? I put him in esteemed company as Campbell, Rehn, Everitt, Dear, Lawrence, etc, etc.

I'm looking for a ruckman who could challenge Don Scott for the ruck position for the best Hawthorn team ever (Paul Salmon is excluded as he has Bombers blood in him, thus he can't make MY cut). I'm yet to see us produce an A-class ruckman apart from Scott and even then he wasn't exactly known for his talent. I daresay if you rate Max that highly, you have rose-coloured glasses on, my friend.

Lawrence was looking really good for a year or so there.

Lawrence was looking really good for a year or so there.

Yep, I thought that even as I wrote it. :) But then I figured Nick Holland looked great as a forward for an even longer period and didn't make my short list for forwards either, so...

We might not have produced many top line ruckman at our club but we sure do well at developing key forwards. I assure you the league is envious of our record in that part of the ground! I don't think we haven't produced ruckmen for lack of trying, its just a quirk of history. Are there any clubs who routinely produce top line ruckman? The players you refer to are not all that common.

Is there a dislike button? If so, please don't wear it out.

I think Max is already a better ruck than Scott was. He's better in virtually every area you want a ruck to be. He still has time and 'potential' to rediscover some of his pre-injury attributes too.

The only thing Scott had over Max IMO was his iron-will, determination and a hint of thuggery - things which elevated him from a good-average player to how many Hawks of that time remember him. Scott was a leader amongst men, got in and did the dirty work, but got there through desire. I liken him more to Rob Campbell, a player who elevated himself out of sheer desire. (Campbell was a poor ruckman who became competent, Scott was an average ruckman, who became very good)

So are you suggesting Max Bailey should replace Don Scott in the Hawthorn Team of the Century? That's certainly the angle I'm working from when I say no. Max still has the potential to become an all-time great, but it's up to him to show the courage and consistency to be the best he can be. At this stage of his career, I can't rate him as great. That may change by the time he retires... it's all up to the big guy.

It was a question.

I guess it depends on the parameters of the A Class.
If you grade a 32 game ruckman compared to a 302 game ruckman, he will not match up.

but as a ruckman I feel Max is A Class. As were Campbell, Rehn, Everitt, Dear, Lawrence
All about perception.

Exciting news, and I'm looking forward to seeing the kid play. Anyone with that size and athleticism can pose a threat. It's good to hear Wright saying he can kick too, which I was worried about. But in the modern game, learning to play in your team's structures is critical - let's hope after he comes over full time he can make some progress there.

Admitedly, we don;t use top 10 -15 picks on ruckmen, like a lot of other clubs.

As a club, I just don't feel we really value them.

With most rucks (unless they are an absolute stand out) you tie up a development spot on your list for 5 several years potentially. Perhaps that is the logic and why we have traded for established ruck in recent times? I still hope we get to see the very best of Max. It is obvious the club really rated him and still do.

Anyone know when Shem is playing next for box hill or oakleigh chargers?

Has been named to play this Saturday for Oakleigh Chargers.

That video mentions he'll also play for the BH dev team. I'm guessing that'll be next week after their bye this weekend.
