shocking starts killing us

Massive issue going into this week.. Essendon could destroy us like last year if we come out with another one of these weak starts. Almost worth starting extra defensive, i'm sure they have had it drilled in them to come out harder but it's not happening. We're blowing our effort in the 3rd quarters to try and get back, when we should be using that patch to put a team away.

17.6 richmond to 16.13 bulldogs after quarter time.

well there you have it dont you. why give the game to them- what is in hardwicks head to do this? must be a reason why delidio is not going in the guts

why is our coaching staff not addressing this issue. most game we have started poorly. skill errors also costing us, back to the drawing board.
Do you honestly think Dimma is just ignoring it hoping it goes away? I think not. But, whatever he's doing, and whatever discussion sthey are having internally about it, certainly aren't working. Essentially cost us this game. We kicked 108 points to the Doggies 109 after 1/4 time.

Need to start well next week. Assuming Edwards misses, we might need to bring in an extra defensive mid. How long is White out for?
Dons will be missing Hurley and probably Watson and Hocking will be suspended.

How about we get rid of the banner dont play the theme song just let them run out they might think its the 3rd quarter

Essendon game was quite similar last year. they got 40 points on us, final margin was 45....or something like that.

Look at the bigger picture. We need to learn to not rely on Deledio in the middle soley. So we should take the pain until we learn to stand up without him there.

Questions need to be asked

Why after 8 rounds can he not fix our slow starts? Do the coaching staff have an answer at all?

Why after all the talk about finding good decision makers, does he continue to play 2 dumb footballers in Rance and McGuanne in the backline? We can only afford to have one.

Why is Angus Graham continuing to be played when he's virtually useless? Browne surely must get a run.

Why do you continue to reward so so efforts and not promote players from Coburg? Did Nason really deserve to be playing this week over Webberly?

Why do you play Houli when he doesn't tackle or provide adequate effort in contested situations? Send him to Coburg to learn how to tackle, make him tag a player.

Re: Questions need to be asked

Funny how everyone suddenly wants dramatic changes after a loss to a side that in all honesty is a better side then ours. Rance has been doing a good job in the weeks previously and I do agree Nason is not up to it. Disappointing start was the reason we lost the game and it is one thing that needs to be fixed as soon as possible.

last year we did okay in 1st quarters. we really need to start deledio in the middle and none of this tactical crap where the coaching staff thinks he'll get tagged and wont get any touches.

Maybe you haven't realized but our Defence is leaking goals enough with Deledio playing in there, taking him out will only make it worse.

Just need to hold out and wait for the kids to mature and become better defensively, until we do that Deledio will stay there to clean up the mess off others.

Deledio doesn't make one iota of difference to how well our backline defends, he's there for rebound. His opponent is invariably a tagger anyway, so it's not like he's even defending a forward.

So you're suggesting moving our second most experienced defender/rebounding defender out of defence and brining in another kid to make it even more weaker?

Yes I can see how that makes sense.

Mate every week we get smashed in the first quarter and Deledio moves in the middle and we get back into the contest. It doesn't take a rocket scientest to suggest we are a better side with him in the middle. This is one way we can help our starts.

The reason our backline leaks so much is because the other team is allowed to break easily from the midfield too often. Having Lids in there goes a long way to preventing that. I would call it going to the source of the problem, rather than addressing the symptoms.

I think the leaking goals issue is a direct result of the poor starts.

Not saying that Deledio starting in the middle would make a difference, but the starts are a real issue.the reason we are leaking ang getting involved in shootouts is due to being behind early. The only way back is to take risks and open the game up,therefore being extremely vulnerable the other way.

I suppose the positive out of it is that we were incapable of mounting a challenge of sorts in the past and certainly not capable of scoring 100+ on a weekly basis.

The fact that Freo kicked so inaccurately papered over the cracks. If we were to ever start well I would like to think that we wouldn't surrender goals as easily.

The way the dogs go about it is their achillies heel as they are a bit of a one trick pony and give an opportunity to get back which would be of concern if we were the same. How would we know we never get a bloody lead!

But if we don't improve our starts we will get some serious beltings from better sides who just strangle you once on top.

I missed part of the quarter due to the mess that is Metro and them wanting us to change at Flinders St so we can then wait for another train just to get to Southern Cross. BUT, any truth to the Richmond players going to the cheer squad (or similar) before the match for a bit of a rev up?

Yep, did it last week as well.

Aaaand.....that worked well:rolleyes:.

I don't know - I wrote about this issue on a couple of threads a few weeks ago (as we all did).
The interesting thing is our 3rd and 4th quarters have been quite good - so it's not a fitness problem.

I wonder if the coaching game plan is going in with a defensive mindset - 'let's see what the opposition do and work out how best to counter that'. And we do work out how to counter it. But maybe the game plan needs to be 'They have to stop us'.
