Should Carlton cast Gibbs as a tagger?

I know this is contentious but many great midfielders have started life as a tagger. It would take the pressure of the kid and it would teach him some of the finer points of the game. Clearly this is not his best position but may be would be a good introduction to senior afl footy. Any thoughts?

No i dont think so. I'd like to see Gibbs be given the oportunity to make some exciting inroads this year and given some freedom to explore his own game. This will include defensive and offensive play alike.

I think some players do benefit from being used in tagging roles (ala Walker) but unless they are struggling with their own game, it generally shouldnt be forced upon someone, especially someone with such exquisite talent.

Yeah but from the games that I have seen, he is not getting much of the ball. I agree that his tallent is emense, but I would like to see him taking a responsible roll. Gibbs is wonderful but I wonder if we expect too much. Let him run with a class midfielder and see if he can learn. He will still hurt teams with his disposal even if he is tagging.

Gibbs doesnt really need to learn. He already has senior experience at SANFL level, and I think it is a matter of time before that talent shines at AFL level.

what is going on......

the guy has been superb in his first games, are you serious ? Go back and watch the games specifically for Gibbs. The thing you will notice is how unbelievably effective the guy is with the ball, how much talent he has, and a general wow factor.

Also realise how easy it is to miss the guy, you don't realise who it was , he has that non-event about him, bentick like. You see someone do this brilliant dodge and kick and go who was that...rewind.....Gibbs....

Gibbs is not an athlete playing football who needs to be taught the game.
He also already has a defensive side to his game.

I really couldn't see the point. He has looked great when he has had the ball, he just hasn't done it as much as we would like
Let him flourish as the creator he will be for us in the future not stifle him with a taggers role

We have absolutely nothing to worry about with Bryce. He's played 3 games, and we saw glimpses of what he can do last week.

Dont think the idea is stupid. Even if he was given a tagging role this does not mean that he cannot play attacking footy. To my mind it is more a phychology thing to ease some mental pressure.

When Kouta was struggling back around 98 or 99 he was put to CHB and told to just nullify an opponent. This took pressure off him mentally and then he started to flourish from CHB in an attacking way and then went into the middle and dominated.

Gibbs may be going just fine however a tagging role may make him even better quicker.

Yeah but a lot of good midfieldes (including Buckly and Voss) started life as run-with players. They both played attacking football but pushed back as a run-wth when the ball was going the other way.

Let him play his own game, isn't the sort that needs to be tagging - already a smart footballer as it is and is just finding his feet at the moment, as you would expect from a 17 year old.
