Just wondering on people's thoughts on this?

In Cog's initial years everyone assumed he's be made captain eventually.

He is clearly well like amongst the playing group, and is probably our hardest and most inspirational player. And looking at the way he sang the song in his comeback match he bleeds for the yellow and black.

Now I have nothing against Newman at all, but I think that if we appoint a new coach next year, we should look into this seriously. I think Coughlan is the right guy with the right attitude to inspire and influence the younger guys on our list as we develop and move forward.

My $0.02

If Coggs gets through the rest of this year he will be locked into our midfield rotation and a shoe-in for starting in the centre square every game in 2010.

As hard as it might be to move Newman on so quickly Coggs is clearly an outstanding leader on the field and would certainly be captain now had injury not intervened.

Yes I would 100% support his appointment next year if this were to gain momentum...

What's Newy done wrong, exactly?

There are plenty of better places to point the finger than at the bloke who's been skipper for a few months.

Doesn't need to be captain to be a leader.

agree 100%

Let cogs just concentrate on playing footy,i dont think his motivation to get back would of been to captain the tigs, so lets just let him settle in and string a few games under his belt and let that be his main focus.
his presence in the side is inspirational enough, ,if kane was still the captain and we were looking at new appointments towards the end of the year id certaintly back coughlan, but i dont think their is much to be gained from ousting newman at the end of the season as you suggest

What a stupid suggestion.
The bloke has been out of the game for 2.5 years.
Before even thinking about captaincy he needs to only get back to the player that he was, and he still has a fair way to go

Cotchin to be our next captain.
The tigers have to bite the bullet and appoint him in two years. Therefore Newman needs to fullfil captaincy next year as well.
Dont be fooled by Cotchin's age, he is good enough and he smacks of leadership.
Let him concentrate on playing this year and next - then give it to him.
I personally believe a captain needs to be a midfielder or person that can go in the mid and influence a game, or when the chips are down and a fully fit coughlan would be ideal but it would be unfair on him to ask him to do it. Let him concentrate on playing each week and getting his body right.
Captains like Lloyd, Glass IMO dont work as they cant go in the mid.
Cotchin will be our and potentially is our best mid.

It's not that stupid when you're trying to change a club's culture...

It is stupid to give somebody so much more pressure to have to deal with when he is trying to rebuild his career.
Just because he looked certain to be captain before he was ruined by injury doe not mean as soon as he is back it is an option again.
Things have changed, and as somebody said, Newman is just warming the seat for Cotchin. Cogs can still be a leader around the club without having the burden of captaining the side

Sorry, but no he should not be. Newman has done nothing wrong so far and Cogs is only just finding his feet again, it would be silly to bring him in as captain

Newman has done nothing wrong so far...

Yeah, he's just bounced back and forth between anonymous and pathetic so far this year, really deserves to wear the no.17.

We free him up to play on nobody week after week because he's a very poor defender, then he rewards us with absolute nothing 15 possession games like his one on the weekend and his 'effort' against Melbourne.

He escapes criticism time after time while kids and honest goers get slaughtered here for much better efforts - it's very, very wrong.

He's never EVER worked hard enough (which is why he's still a cheap stat rebounder and not a midfielder) and he's the very first player I'd be looking to trade come next season - though I suspect we'll find that any recruiter with a clue will give him a very wide berth or offer us bugger all.

Captain's shouldn't be hit and miss downhill skiiers who too often have very little impact on a game.

Seeya later Chris, thanks for pretending to try. :thumbsd:

Chris Newman is still the right man for the job. Can't pass judgement at him so soon seeing as he's had nothing to work with.

Cogs has got much more important things to worry about.

In an article a week or so ago Nathan Brown said he was probably the quietest bloke at the club and could easily go a week without speaking a word. I know that's an exaggeration but I'm not sure I'd want such an introverted bloke as captain of the football club.

Doesn't need to be captain to be a leader.

Exactly right, I remember when Deledio played some good games in a row last year and out of nowhere people start making threads like "Make Lids Captain Now!"
Firstly, like you said Knighter, Cogs doesn't need to be captain to be a leader, so why add that pressure to him so fast into his return.
Secondly, what the hell's wrong with Newy? give the bloke a chance!
