Should Malthouse lead you into the future?

Nothing to do with form. I am thinking tactical nous, player development and motivational abilities. Interested to hear what every group of fans has to say about their future under their current coach.

When is the use by date? It will be interesting to see if voting is based purely on form this season or whether there are dissenters in every clubs ranks who can see something most of us can't.

Malthouse is an expert at player development. West Coast in the 90's did not really have that many "superstars" - maybe Lewis, Matera and Jako and a couple others. Their strength was how good ordinary footballers were able to maximise their abilities - eg Waterman, Worsfold, Sumich, Heady etc etc. Ben Johnson in 2002 is a classic example of a Malthouse prototype - some strengths, plenty of weaknesses, a strong defensive ethic, and the ability to play above oneself for a prolonged period of time.

He is a long term coach and does not have a set expiry date. How the likes of Cole, McGough, Shaw, Walker and Richards etc develop will determine MM's longevity.

And a flag would help too!!

Assuming we didn't overperform last year (which I was starting to believe until we got over the Crows last week), and we'll have many years of success, Mick will be around for a long time. He's already shown how good he is at building up a team, and it would be good to have him around for the next 'cycle' (if there ever is one). I rate Mick as one of the best coaches in the league (Matthews being the other, but I can't see him coaching Collingwood again) and I can't see any of the younger coaches being near his quality. Laidley has the potential though.

I hope he's around for a long time, not just because he's a top coach, but because there is not much in terms of a replacement.

I'm a huge wrap for MM's player development strategies. They are individualised and seem to work very well. He has histiry to point to as well. I was not for his Mr. Grumpy act that I thought he'd bring with him but IMO Ed has tought the old dog a few new tricks. As imortant as anything, the players love him AND have enormous respect for him. Battle half won.

If I had 1 criticism it would be that he hasn't corrected the obvious ruck flaw and persist with Aa ruckman who just can't ruck. Oh perhaps also that he has a few favorites but all coaches do. Only Mathews is really heartless.

Sign him for 5 years I say.

**** Yes, hes a great coach. Its the players that battled today. Too many skill errors.

A six goal jump is purely a coaching issue. MM at times lacks the "how do I fix this quick?". Dean come back.

MarkT, the ruck again today cost us. This an MM "strategy", which he should hang for sooner or later.

As for their being nobody else around. Truly a moot point. Do you continue to pay somebody $800K+ a year for ordinary W/L records, and some unconscionable recruiting decisions, is a more pertinent point. BTW, LM, Sheeds, MM, Pagan etc were all first year coaches. There are others.
