Paes is a pure technician. The clutch volley at his feet at break point was a thing of beauty. I'm not sure the great volleyers are coming though. It's a pity cause that match was great.

I know it goes against my argument in the OP, but I'd guess the top 100 are making good money, but it's probably only the top 50 who are doing very well.

When you consider most wouldn't have clear employment paths set up for them (outside coaching etc) there would only be a very small number making a far better than average income.

Tennis is regarded as an elitist sport in many countries, and although it may not be here at a social level, it is at a professional level. Maybe TA has started funding people a bit more I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if half of the reason why we've had few GS champs post 1980 is due to a lot of the kids with talent not necessarily having parents with money. A woman my mum knew through work had a son who was quite good and she was telling my mum that it was quite costly, especially because she wasn't that keen on sending her son off by himself. These people were loaded as well. This was probably in the early 00's or late 90's.

I think Andrea Petkovic has mentioned in the past that if she wasn't at a certain ranking by the time she was about 22 or something she was going to give it away. She by the sounds of things has uni and stuff that she can fall back on, and it seems many players don't finish school and have nothing to fall back on. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to be in such a situation where you have to battle it out at challengers and earn a pittence. I think the likes of Petkovic and Ebden, who actually have something to fall back on have made the right choice. Tennis is only a short term career, i.e. you can't just ditch where many get there income from.
