If we end up with pick 1, 2 (Allen compo), 10 (Hawks pick), 19 and 28 (Hawks pick), I dont think we should be getting any assistance apart from some extra rookie spots. I get that some of those picks will move but that's still enough draft capital to work with.
I think we need an AFL system change that long term will benifit the competition.

Yah except with academy picks those selections will become 1, 2, 17, 30+ and 40+...

Personally I love the idea of "locking" our picks to their positon so they can't move back. The other picks float around them.

Not aimed at you of course.

I have no issue with not getting assistance, seven years after a flag.

So when is it appropriate. 8 years after? 10? 20 years? Its just all rubbery what and when they feel like doing something.

The damage is already done. A priority pick should have been done 4 years ago, at the beginning of the rot, the old automatic: finished under 5 years in a season.

This is how we get teams that are long term basket cases and non stop turnover and any players of substance, bailing out.
They'll just keep saying its too soon until its someone else's turn to try for one.

Like that ESPN dickhead who even admitted 2 years ago he said in 2 years if we're still this bad we should get one. And now actually he's decided he's against the whole thing for some new reasons.

To answer this question you need to answer THIS question.

If we merged with another team, let's say for arguments sake north, that makes me vomit too but hypothetically speaking.

Which players or from our team would they bother taking?

These are ones in my opinion that would. I'm not including Allen who is gone or McGovern.
It was 15 players I think went from Fitzroy to the bears.

1. Waterman
2. Reid
3. Hewett
4. Ginbey
5. Maric
6. Edwards
7. Yeo (maybe)
8. Baker
9. Graham.
10. Hough.

Would you take a risk on the following

1. A reid
2. Shanahan
3. Chesser
4. Brock
5. Gross

So if that's it with the first 10, then yes.

We need urgent draft assistance.

We would keep way more than that.
Who do you think is on North's list? They're not that good lol

Looks like you're just picking guys in or in the mix for best 22 next week

Not unexpected, but it's started already.

Two headlines from The Age and Herald Sun (which I won't open).

West Coast’s ‘inappropriate’ draft assistance request:

Seven years after winning a flag, the Eagles have asked the AFL for draft help
Well ask them what’s the alternative as we could even get worse before we get better and as somebody else said that’s not a good look fir the AFL. . In any event it shouldn’t matter when we last won a flag as ever since we haven’t been much chop and I thought the criteria was a club had to be down the bottom section of the ladder for 2-3 years which I’m sure we pass that criteria lol.

After todays effort we should be asking for 4 priority picks to replace Duggan. Williams, Flynn and Owies.

While I 100% agree with this, this is also the Elephant in the room for the AFL.

We have let's say 30 guys on our list who are WAFL battlers at best.
The talent pool is spread far far to thin. There just isn't enough AFL quality players to field the number of teams and yet we want to add more. We need to find another 40 odd players.

So we either spread the quality players out, reducing the level of all teams, or we end up with teams like us. Full of spuds that aren't and never will be at the level required.

The whole system is cooked, and it sucks that we are being exposed to the worse of it

What i don't get is why there aren't alarm bells going off about how bad we are and some serious consideration of why that is. Especially in WA & especially in the media.

  • The draft is broken and we don't have the mechanism to get enough high end talent onto our list in our current situation
  • We are worse than NM, GC, & Bris were when they got their PP's
  • When NM, GC & Bris got their PP's they had lists already stacked with top 10 & first round picks - we don't, and we don't have the mechanism to rectify that.
  • Unlike other clubs who were able to rebuild around senior players, ours literally fell off a cliff. Why is it that? Travel is the obvious elephant in the room - but we can't talk about that or else no one will want to play for us.
  • Our WAFL situation is DIRE. Something needs to change so we can develop our kids & teach them how to win.
  • WA is producing poorer talent every year
  • Tasmania is coming in a couple of years

Not sure if it's pride or not wanting to be seen as a whinger, but why are WA newspapers happy to hose down conversations around PPs or seriously look into what's happened to cause this. Wild.

Totally.

There are way too many teams. Especially with the challenge of different sports taking the kids away from AFL.

What really needs to happen is the number of teams in Victoria isnredcied by 6 but we know it will never happen.

The US has a population of roughly 350 million people and the three main sporting codes have 30 - 32 teams in each league. We have a population of 25 million and are preparing to bring in a 19th team.

Because the writers for those papers don't support WCE. They follow Freo or VFL clubs.

Surprise, Surprise, now Barrett is arcing up against us getting a PP.
Did he use his media influence when NM were getting all their assistance 😅 i doubt it very much.

So we have 30 players who are wafl battlers? That would be our own fault for not being good enough to see talent , identify it or develop it properly… 100% our fault that we need to fix…. We also resign these plodders to deals year after year… hello Callum Jamieson.

We won't even get that.
I think we're getting something. The fact that we've come out in the media to say we're asking for a PP means we've probably already asked in private and it's been approved.
It coming out in the media now is to get people and the usual media morons used to the idea that we're getting assistance.

Still happening too, Hutchinson on a long term contract, after less than half a season of mediocre form? Dumb as f**k.
I'm still for assistance though, just about every other team has had a leg up in the last few years, why not us?
