Because the writers for those papers don't support WCE. They follow Freo or VFL clubs.
Exactly. The Eagles are a unique case in WA, beloved by their fans and hated by all others. Their owner (WAFC) arguably dislikes them as they greatly diminished the WAFL. The media seems to be filled with fans of other teams who have massive chips onto their shoulders. They don't really have any advocates.

Isn't the same media baron who supports war criminals and Basil a fan? That's what my purple mates tell me.

Yeah, because an 18 year old pick 3 would make all of the difference

Hell, we'd probably be vying for top 4.
What I do know is Harvey Langford would be giving us more then Bo Allan and that id rather have Liam Baker then the 2025 Hawthorn Death Ride thread :D

Matt Clarke got his ass spanked primarily is the problem. Bakers use or lack thereof (not a massive fan myself cos his ball use sucks) is very secondary to the actual issue. Matt Clarkes ineptitude

It's so short sighted - our problems have systemic root causes that show equalisation and the draft are broken.

We're not going to be the only club to fall into a hole like this.

St Kilda has been there for a while, North is arguably stuck there too. Probably us and Richmond are the ones that will get the problem noticed. Two big clubs, one Victorian. If we get stuck in long rebuilds that could really threaten the brand if the members drop off.

I think the AFL is going to hit a point of unsustainability in the next decade. They keep assuming that every new broadcast deal will get bigger and bigger, but the main customer (free to air TV) is declining year on year. At some point, they'll decide the cost isn't worth the ratings and then the AFL will have a big problem.

Imagine what happens if the next media agreement is for less money than the last one? Players won't want to take a pay cut, they'd rather see less teams and less pieces you need to cut the pie up for.

The three reasons commonly given by the vAFL media-mafia seem to be ‘rich’ or ‘incompetent’ or ‘recent flag’.

The first is easily tossed to one side.

As to ‘competency’ I’ve never seen it defined. If competency is the issue, then that line of attack must mean North were competent when they got multiple picks. If so, why are they so continually hopeless?

So is competency list management? Is it coaching? It can’t be finance related (because remember we’re too ‘rich’ to get assistance). Come on ‘experts’ define competent.

Or. We see previous assistance justified by win-loss ratios - which should then see us qualify. Oh but hang on the Eagles recently won a flag. Yet no one ever suggests the poor win-loss assistance only applies if you haven’t won a flag or GF or whatever.

These are easy lines to throw out there but they don’t bear scrutiny. I’d like these ‘experts’ tackled about these simplistic throwaway lines.

To me, the elephant in the room is there’s underlying bias against us because we’re rich, we’re successful and we’re not Victorian. Simple.

Would also say Melbourne, Carlton, Essendon, Port may not be far from it.

Looking at list age-profiles, Collingwood and Geelong are only an injury crisis away.

However, the protective factors for the big vic clubs is their bility to attract quality trades & the longevity of seniors/veterans

No team/club would like to endure or seek the last four seasons we have had.

Assistance should be based on lack of success over a certain number of seasons (three?).
This is an objective criterion. Which team it is, where they come from, how much money they have, when they last won the premiership are all irrelevant.

Having more money is the greatest myth there is. How does that help when virtually every club has to spend nearly the same on salary cap, and coaching and other related activities.
How exactly does it help to have more money? That part at least has been equalised.

This is an interesting point that I think some in the biz already recognise.
I remember hearing Hutchinson mentioning that there is basically no more money in broadcast rights that the AFL can squeeze. And that they shouldn't expect the same amounts that come in as a given going forward.
They will need to find other sources of revenue, which with the money from the broadcast deals basically bankrolling the league, will be hard to account for.
Or they need to seriously strip back. See AFLW.

The forced entry of AFL into NRL heartland has been an utter disaster that's reduced the standard of footy across the whole league. It's already staring us in the face. What's more the player drain will only get worse with the introduction of Tassie, and when the damage to WA footy results in fewer players being developed here.

Just watched the round so far and when it came to our game, they mentioned how west coast are wanting priority picks but got rid of jai culley and it has come back to bite them 😄
After a huge 12 possession game against the worst team in the comp. 🤡 s

He had 3 touches at half time.
Put the down hill skates on big time after half time.

Good luck to him, but let's see he back it up against better teams for the remainder of the season

The thing that confuses me is the ‘you won a flag seven years ago’ argument, which seems to imply that we need to be patient before we’re successful again.

But priority picks aren’t there to kickstart teams to their next flag; they are there to ensure the league is competitive and compelling.

There’s been so much discourse this year about the lopsided nature of the league, and we’ve been a problem for years. I haven’t run the numbers but I bet a team or two will make the finals this year simply because they got a chance to beat up on us twice.

The AFL should (will) be thinking about the ‘product’ privately whilst making us earn it publicly. I’m confident they will give us picks to trade for mature bodies.

That team is probably Freo (making the 8).

Crows will lock in top 2 due to belting us twice.

Seeing as they are all in on the draft not being compromised, only complicated, it may be worthwhile leveraging that as a strategy for compensation.

Go through each of our last 3 drafts and put a points value on what father son/NGA selections have pushed out natural picks out to. So for example if we should have had pick 19 and put pick came at 30, how many of the silly trade value points was that worth? Tally that over the last 3 drafts and then us that number as the value of compensation that we are seeking.

This approach reframes the nature of the request from asking for free stuff to redressing issues caused by a failing system.

I witnessed Brander walk all over is in another GWS belting, he only played one or two games after that being dropped for a lack of toughness against real teams. We fielded a Colts team against melbourne effectively.
