Oh I think most of us are - in principle - anti-PP/assistance.

But "equalisation" has failed. The draft is compromised, free agency doesn't help those at the bottom get better, & some clubs get academy perks that others don't.

I am VERY much against them, but I agree, I just didn't see why we should be expected to compete against teams given every handout and advantage the AFL can dream up.

It is kinda fun pissing off 17 other fan bases gotta admit.

I am fine with it as a Carlton supporter myself (slightly miffed we have to pay a lot more for Cody Walker than what Brisbane did for The Ashcroft boys and Jaspa Fletcher though)

Your assistance 'package' is more than rreasonable in context of the sugar treats the QLD clubs have gotten in their academies and in Lions case F/S, over the 3/4 years.

Sadly your end of first round pick this season is almost going to be in the 30s, so it's not the massive leg up many would assume it would be (in a fairly shallow draft)

Might be worthwhile trading for a future first from a club that needs points next yeat imo

Any idea what players are falling around that pick?
At GC’s pick or the end of first?

At GC’s pick I would be expecting a few of the following will be around: Sharp, Cumming, Robey, Schubert, Lindsay, Farrow. Draper compo could be band 1 which would see the pick end up as pick 8 in the open pool and push out probably to pick 12 on the day. Regardless I have no qualms somebody good for us will be available.

End of first feels like it will drop off quite a bit and as a pick on draft day may blow out to 30. Somebody like barker would be the best we could hope for. I’m not overly interested in that range personally - we don’t have the list spots and need to go for proper elite talent.

I've always contended that our club could do with extra list spots as travelling emergency players dilute our wafl side . 2 extra NGA spots so better chance that they develop . 2 extra spots for delisted playes or a late speculative pick also helps our depth and wafl side and increases chance of finding a diamond in the rough . I like the 4 rookie spots , thats 4 less ammos in the wafl side .

Absolutely this.

It's partly our own making, partly horrible timing with soft cap shit coming in just as we were properly building our WAFL side, partly poor luck and partly the exact situation you're talking about - a more travelling list means less players getting games in the 2s to develop, therefore a less complete 2s side, roll on effect etc etc.

But yeah that's the biggest thing IMO, whilst I'd take an ND pick the extra list spots/options are the most relevant, and whilst some might disagree I feel Freo should get a half version of this also given the travel stuff. Know they've got a better deal with Peel but that's their win - I think WA teams in general should have extra spots at the bottom of the list to account for regularly travelling emergencies/issues around that.

Being able to build from the bottom (for us, the Northern states clubs, whoever) seems like such a more palatable equalisation measure in general than compromising the top end. If Brisbane/GC/Sydney/GWS had unearthed awesome talent to build their sides through players the rest of the league had passed up on (and it was just a flowon effect from them having stronger lists overall) then great, wouldn't really complain about that.

It's the access to the top end of the draft (where things should be most equalised) that's annoying. And yeah while I'd take an end of R1 pick it'd be in the context of other teams getting legs up - in general I'd honestly be against it.

It wont blow out to 30.

Mid 20s.

Players ranked around that pick include Rodreguez, Baker, Matt Leray, Onley and Nairn.

In the 30s we are looking at Curtin, Taj Murrey, Swaddling.

I wouldnt be packaging 3 picks to land a late top 10 pick.

If the leaks are correct and we are getting an end of 1st PP we should use it. And our 2nd. It a bonus if we arent forced to trade the pick as it devalues it.

Use players leaving and future picks to upgrade and the Hawks 2nd pick 33.

If we get a end of 1st that basically returns the pick value of the past three seasons the Eagles have lost where our pick 19 or 20 has slid out to 30 due to the AFL assisting other teams including grand finalists.

Plus 4 rookie spots.

Its the bare minimum the AFL should be doing for the team finishing last with 1 win.

Brisbane is getting a bigger leg up this draft and trade period under the current AFL policies. Suns getting two top 5 kids cheap

Agreed , and players like Barrass , O Allen and ( Chesser l am saying just for the laughs ) leave for brighter pastures and bigger money , i dont mind the bottom side getting an extra end of round plus extra rookie spots to help comlensate the free agency exodus of lowest club . This being a permanent aid thing I wouldnt object to. .

No official announcement yet?
That's not how the AFL work. They leak through the press (happened a bit a week or so ago and then much more directly yesterday), wait to assess blow-back and then make it formal. I'm not hearing much blow-back from yesterday, so I expect what they reported to be made official later today:
-4 rookie spots for NGA/FS (not sure if we can pre-list)
-end of R1 PP (not required to be traded)

We can already pre-list NGA players if they aren't selected in the National Draft.

The ability to pre-list before the National Draft seems unlikely and I can't find any mention of it outside of this board.
Gold Coast were initially allowed to prelist academy players as part of their package.

This was removed after the first or second year, as they were able to prelist players who were viewed as first round prospects.

Gold Coast then had to match bids on National Draft bids, but retained their extra rookie list spots for undrafted academy kids and for delisted players, which were paid outside the salary cap.

Will the end of first round pick be tied to our finishing position, which would put it before any band 2 compensation picks, or will it be after those which would give us 2 picks in a row.

When norf received the same priority pick all band 2 compos came before the PP

As reported yesterday, West Coast has received an end-of-first-round draft pick and four extra rookie list spots from the AFL as its assistance package. The four rookie list spots can be kept for 2026, 2027 and 2028. The first round pick doesn't have to be traded.

Mustn't have been much blowback from clubs then, after the shitstorm when they announced North's package.

cheers, got to be happy with that.
The 4 rookie spots for 3 years is a good get, no mention of NGA pre-listing which is interesting?

Huh? This is better than North’s package? Didn’t they have to trade all their picks?
The reaction to North's package. Remember, they dropped the bomb the afternoon of the Brownlow and the clubs all cracked the shits over it.

They basically gave the clubs 24hr notice for ours and we haven't heard anything.
