Correct me if I'm wrong but was he taken in the 04 draft? If so players like Jackson and Pettifer have had longer to perform but kept on, Tambling has had the same time and hasn't really kicked on yet, and we have other players like JON who haven't shown alot either.

Note that Im not necessarily advocating that we needed to get rid of any or all of those players, just that for such a low pick Meyer deserved a bit more time to make an impact at AFL level, particularly for someone who had injury issues. If we were going to get rid of him in this time fair enough, but certainly Pettifer and Jackson haven't done anything to warrant being kept ahead of him in the draft, regardless of tricky salary cap issues like Pettifer might have with his injury.

yeah naaaa, thank god we dont do that anymore, or we havent the ****wit doing that anymore.
No!! we cut our losses and wish him well in his new club. ;)

It's not that I'm saying it was a mistake to delist him, just that if we are going to start getting rid of players who aren't performing yet for whatever reason he wasn't first in the line

when talking purely about list balance, re. age spread vs potential vs performance, in his age group he was. ;)

Personally I was surprised we got rid of him. He'd taken his time, but it seemed like he had finally gotten his body right and was starting to at least show something in the 2's, and then we cut him off.

I would've preferred we kept him to be honest, but I guess the position we are in - youn and on the improve - is one which creates a few difficulties, but difficulties you want to have. Similar to deciding who is going to fill the last couple of spots in the team each week, you're usually going to have to delist one or two players who are perhaps a bit unlucky.

So who else could we have delisted? Pettifer would be the one I'd say, but he's definitely not as bad as people make him out to be. You mentioned Jackson, but for mine he'd shown a fair bit more than Meyer. Aside from them, you've got your JON's, Collins', Graham's, but Meyer's either got a year or two on them, they fill a position we are light on, or both.

Contrary to Beaver's belief that we could've delisted 15 players last year, someone was going to be unlucky.

What is it with the continual bagging of jackson.

He is a walk up in our top 22.

If he contiunes his development at the same level as this year he will go close to top 10 in the B&F i reckon.

cant work out why people hate him so much. i have been a fan from day 1 and while he has taken some developing, he has really started to show something.

From the outside, I would have kept Meyer.

The only thing that would change my mind was his interraction with the group and his personality - I'm a big believer that team chemistry and using psychology to your advantage can pay large dividends.

jackson is required by the rfc, we dont have that many taggers that cat run with the bigger body mids. jackson, polo & johnson sugar should be gone soon & that only leaves 2.

the boys in the gun adter 2009 if they dont come on will be.
jon , gus , king , petts , collins , and sugar will retire.

Jackson will make the tagging role his own in 09.
As for Meyer, I was disappointed to see him go. He started playing some decent footy down at Coburg and he was playing as a small defender, a position where we are lacking some players. We can't look back and what he could've been, good luck to him at port.

i am not having second thoughts at all at the fact meyer has been de-listed by the tigers,
he was dead wood to the club. i dont believe he showed anything while playing seniors and only remembering him missing set shots at goal while 30m out on a slight angle.

i wish him all the best at P.A but i dont think for one moment that he will become anything more than a passenger at P.A.

not for one moment do i think he could be the next David Rodan for P.A so i have already moved on and cant wait for season 2009 to start even though i'm likely to be in Queensland the whole time and a long travel time away from watchin any games live.

hopefully i can get pay tv and watch some games

# any tigers supporters in Queensland able to tell my what tv coverage is like for the tigers and AFL in general being that it is in rugby league territory?

the other thing in all this is the musical chairs element- clubs are constantly juggling contracts and only so many players come out of contract in a given year. The choice is not which player(s) you delist its which uncontracted player(s) you delist

Hit the nail on the head Zipper. And would go along way in explaining the club delisting the Goo as well. I don't know the contract status of the players but most of the young guys are on 2 two contracts. Means the likes of petts, jon polo collins gus will be up at the end of 2009. Big season coming up for these guys as another 3-5 will go depending on retirements

As a small back Meyer didn't bring enough to the table and was unlikely to get a game next season as he would be behind a fit Raines and King.

Being torched so badly in the Coburg final loss probably didn't help his cause either. Probably viewed as a one trick pony, not good position to be in as fringe player.

Good luck at Port Danny.

JON is only on the list cos miller signed him half way through tis year and we couldn't just delist him
so i think u will find that come 09 if he doesn't perform he will be shown the door

as for meyer i would have kept him over raines.... ten bucks raines will go the gold coast

you shoot yourself in the foot with that dont you? can you see why Raines has currency, enough to keep him instead of Meyer?
Meyer got picked up in the dregs of the rookie draft, Raines most likely will get us a pick from the GC, if that is on the cards. ;)

i would much prefer raines to king, i feel these 2 players are fighting for the same position. raines was playing on much bigger players & gave us pretty good run out of the backline & has alot more upside than king.
unless king can go through the midfield (kerr style) he really isnt required
and is too small to play on a reasonable size foward.
they will all just take him back to the goal square & he becomes a liability.

Even if he does make a player at Port, you still did the right thing.

Four years on the list is enough chance for a player in the one place, and it just wasn't coming together.

In situtations like this, remember Hawthorn letting one G Ablett go for 50k. While he went on to become one of the legends of the game, Hawthorn won 5 flags in the interim.
