How often did our players defensively give a 5-10m headstart to their direct opponent? Obviously what we do at Subiaco Oval isnt effective on the wide expanses of the MCG. Simply playing man-on-man would be better than our current setup. Everyone knows Rioli kills us yet he and Mitchell find far too much space on the MCG both times.

We just cant zone against the Hawks at the G. We get carved up every single ****ing time. Needs to develop a better plan or we will never get a flag with this group while Hawthorn stands in the way.

I don't think it's just the Hawks, it's the MCG (and a few other "away" grounds) in general :(
But yes, we aren't going to win a flag with this group :'(

I'm not so sure. We just have a shit load of developing to do still. Both coaches and players. But I think this is the worst game Simmo has had for us simply because he didn't learn anything from the GF and didn't change things up during the whole game.

Jesus some of you people give up so easily. Same shit was being said back in 2002-04
We do have a lot of developing to do ...but where is the improvement going to come from?
Our time is now, with Kennedy/LeCras/Priddis still playing good footy and Nicnat/Gaff/Shuey/Emac etc entering their prime
Pity the Hawks just won't go away :/
2015 was fine. losing the GF aside- we far exceeded my very low expectations
But this year- nothing other than a premiership is going to be good enough. And I know I'm going to end up disappointed

Put his on your wall Simmo

At 3/4 time the team board was held up and Gibson was the name not manned up on in the forward line. Everyone in my lounge room looked at each other like WTF is Simpson thinking letting him run free all day?

Simpson needs to acknowledge that his game plan against the Hawks doesn't work and find an alternative ASAP.

I have been a huge Simpson fan from inception and it pains me to say that Clarkson has his measure by some way , but more depressing was that our game plan and structures today showed that we learnt zilch from the GF "pants job" last September.

I will back him in as he is just one of 16 other coaches that are trying to pick the Hawks game plan apart.

That said today was very disappointing and very frustrating to watch.......in six months our coaches have learnt diddly squat.

Game plan. call it what you like but our attack on the player, ball and contest was as soft as butter. Guys wandering [ yes..as in slow walking ] around within five metres of the ball but not getting involved.Simmo please explain what a tackle is,and having grasped that, explain an obviously alien concept called a second effort.Soft soft soft.talk about show an average list too much respect!! Cringworthy!!

Totally agree. I havent yelled at my television in a very long time, but the lack of intensity at the ball carrier and our apparent lack of interest today had me mad. They did not look interested at all today and it was embarrassing. Too many guys just casually strolling around while a Hawks player runs past them to either get the ball first or run past when they already had it.

Geelong seemed to do ok and I hazard a guess that WB will do the same next week.

I just don't think we have enough fire power to beat them, simple as that.

Our 'great side' is a myth based on 3/4 of a successful season last year where we formulated a game plan that destroyed teams more often than not.

As soon as that game plan doesn't work, we simply revert back to 2013/14 bottom-8 level.

Scary to think that the only reason we made the GF last year was based on a single game plan that worked, but might now have been found out and picked apart.

I yelled and cussed a lot at the game today. Think I freaked the Mrs out a bit!

what really pissed me off was the lack of intensity in tight situations. so many times they let the hawks dish the ball off with ease in a tightly contested siutation, only for them to run off with it and score.

seeing this lack of intensity tells me this is beyond the game plan. even if simmo managed to expose hawks game plan with his own, the playing group simply didnt have the will.

there was definitely something off with the way we played.

I don't know, we're essentially running the same gameplan as the Hawks. It's that kick up to the wing that's killing us. The Hawks were always able to push us to kick up the wing to a tall target with a 2 or 3 on 1, where all they had to do was halve the contest in the air, have a crumber swoop and ping it back to the half back line to reload through the middle. We won a lot of games last year by doing the something similar, but punching it out of bounds to have Nic win the throw in and bring it back through the middle.
In reality, we don't work hard enough for long enough and we're not as skilled as the hawks, so going head to head with this game plan is always going to end badly, particularly if we're not willing to put pressure on their ball carriers to at least create a turnover. They ran amok today and in the GF and made us look lazy. And we were lazy.
Too many blokes going in for second efforts, but then standing back thinking their job was done, and the Hawks players would go in a third and fourth time and win the ball. Simmo needs to drill into them that their jobs aren't done until the ball is won, and we're back in an attacking position.

The players need to know that performances like this reflect on how their careers will be perceived. As it stands, they're a talented group that goes belly up when the heat is on. I guess AS backed his gameplan in and backed the players to respond, and they just didn't. The only way to beat Hawthorn is to outwork and outpressure them to bring their precise kicking game apart. Geelong did that very well. The major thing we need to change is our mental approach.

I think that you are right about the MCG. It's hard to develop a system that will work there without being able to practice on a ground of similar dimensions. Your new stadium will be similar to Domain to keep your home ground advantage. Perhaps Eagles need to build an oval of similar dimensions to MCG for match simulation. I believe if Hawks Dingley project goes ahead we may eventually have 2 or 3 different ovals to replicate other key venues.

Of course Dockers won't need to as they can win " Any time. Anywhere".

Well, i remember at the start of this year when Simmo said they "moved on pretty quickly" after the GF and didnt bother reviewing it.

I guess thats exactly what happened. Hence what happened today.

They say the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over and expect the same result...
I believe he said sometime after the match that leaving Rioli unattended was something that they would look to rectify. So you had an extra defender to curb Rioli and we had a spare defender, and his name was Gibson.

Your midfield was ordinary today. If you look at the possession and inside 50 discrepancy the scoreline could have been ugly.

Yeah yeah we know all this. Are you just gloating or you have a point?

Sorry. Rude of me. I've explained in an earlier post that the wider flanks of MCG pose a problem because you are unfamiliar with them.

Hawks always struggle to defend against balls that come in quickly leaving our defenders one on one as our defenders are generally undersized for their position and not great in the air. Given that Natanui looks very fit I feared we would get smashed out of the middle and concede a lot of inside 50's to Shuey and Priddis.

Dont know whether, it is problem of the game plan or the execution of the game plan, the following issues need to address:
1. The Hawks had more players on/around the ball.
2. The Hawks defended closer to our players (more man on man defence) while we stands 10m away from the enermy allowing the Hawks enough spaces to move around.

We probably need to learn how to play "man on man " again!

There is one huge indicator that our game plan has fallen to bits and clearly not working......When Kennedy is close to the goals....You know the goals where if he kicked it through the middle it would result in a point for the opposition ;)

I didn't even bother to watch it

Knew that we would get pantsed. Taped it then deleted it when I got home

Don't care about losing, but really, really care when there is no effort or Kaizen gone into the process

Shame on you Eagles...

Shame on you too , don't waste your time coming back ,you down hill skier .
