Just heard that the selectors in their infinite wisdom, have decided to drop Michael Slater. He's been replaced by Langer. Apparantly the source is Slater himself. Steve Waugh is also tipped to return. I didn't think Slater had done the bad but obviously the selectors thought otherwise.

Borrowed time

I believe he has been living on borrowed time.Good to see JL get another chance, has had a run of outs but deserves another chance. If Ponting hadn't made runs this time he probably would have gone instead of Slater.I believe that they will open with Katich and Langer will bat at no3.

Slater hasn't exactly set the world on fire this series but it's not as though JL has forced his way back through weight of runs either.

This was taken from the cricinfo site quoting Steve Waugh:

"Slater's form hasn't been what it should have been and Justin deserves his chance.

"There are always related issues but that's for the selection panel. Slater has been dropped on form," he added, quashing speculation the 31-year-old had been dropped for disciplinary reasons.........

1) Why does Justin deserve his chance?

2) Steve's fueled speculation that Slater was dropped for disciplinary reasons.

Apparently Slatts spat it when he was told.

Lets look at it this way ....
What has Hayden done this series?

G I no R HS Avg S/R
Hayden 4 7 1 166 42 27.66 58.65
MJ Slater 4 7 0 170 77 24.28 61.15

Slater has scored more runs, and has at least past 50.

The only reason Hayden has a better average is because he has a NOT OUT ...

In another interesting statistic...
McGrath has averaged more this series then Brett Lee and Shane Warne
McGraths average is 11
Lee's 6
And Warnes 3.25

It was reported that Slater was dropped for diciplinary reasons, building up from India. And its Great to see JL take this oportunity with open hands, 102 Retired Hurt, but says he can continue if needed. One West Aussie in, One Out for the 5th Test

I think he has a massive chip on his shoulder which exploded in India and hasn't changed his attitude since. I think it's a good move and Langer has shown that given a chance he'll make the most of it.

If Slater can't get back into his position, this now opens the door up for another opener, Elliot, Blewett, Hussey...

Jeez he'd be as sick as a pig to miss out on this pitch.
Slater may not have scored many in this series but I actually believe that his gun ho batting style right from the start of an innings has put the English bowlers on the back foot & really helped the middle oreder to make big runs as it has stopped Gough & Caddick getting into the groove that they like when the scoreboard isn't moving.

Amazing, they have dropped someone from NSW!

I think he had to go. He certainly has not starred this series.

yeah so why didn't they drop Brett Lee as well? How gutless are our selectors? How crap is Brett Lee (at the moment)?

Sure we stuffed up in the 4th, and Gilchrst's captaincy was below par (not just the declaration), but above all, he has to shoulder some blame as a selector for NOT dropping Brett Lee for the 4th test.

I mean, are some selection choices just not blatantly obvious?

4th test: IN: Fleming, OUT: B Lee
5th test: IN: Miller, OUT Fleming

not difficult really.

i disagree. I was disappointed that they did not take 3 openers, as policy should dictate, but I think you pick the best team possible. and if that means you pick Damien Martyn and Justin Langer, then it will be hard to fit another opener in. Damien Martyn just cannot be dropped, and Langer, together with Slats (the sook) and Matty (bloody champ in India) are all on the same shaky ground.

David Boon was an opener, but where did he move to make way for Tubby? He batted at number 3, and boy was he good. So what I'm saying is that Langer or Martyn should open, together with Matthew Hayden, or whoever happens to be our best opener of the day.

One thing I do know, is that playing Brett Lee in this 5th test ain't helping much. Why do you think Ponting and Mark Waugh are bowling? I guess Colin Miller was only test cricketer of the year (actually, there's another thing for Slater to be upset about - although that WOULD be justifiable - he wuz robbed).
