for the last 5 months ive been on about 4-6 hours sleep a night. i often have to get up at 5:30 in the morning, but i can't seem to fall asleep until at least midnight. even if i try to go to bed at 9 i can't nod off, nor can i sleep during the day. i put the reason i can't go to bed early is because my body has adjusted to really late night cramming before exams, and my body clock is still screwed.

sometimes i worry that i am not falling asleep and that only makes it worse

i feel REALLY tired every time i have to get up, but im not too bad for the rest of the day.

am i getting enough sleep? should i be waking up feeling fairly awake, rather than wanting to sleep for an extra 5 hours? how much sleep is normal and how much sleep do others get?

i found this:

SLEEPTIME

Sleep needed by an average adult per night: 8 hours
Sleep an average adult gets per night during the workweek: 6 hours, 57 minutes
Sleep an average adult gets per night during the weekends: 7 hours, 31 minutes

I like to get about 8 hours.

What is your eating like? Because I've found my body adjusts to a schedule of sleeping if I eat proper meals at certain times.

Like if I eat brekky at 6am, then lunch at 12, then dinner at 6. I will start to feel tired after dinner.

Try doing a bit of light exercise 30 mins before you go to bed.

thanks ozzult, my eating is probably not the best. sometimes i skip breakfast because i choose to sleep a bit more and just have a bigger lunch.

and i read that exercise before bed, unless its sex (which relaxes you) is a no-no.

im about the same as you Nicko. If i have nothing on, i will sleep from say midnight or 1am till about midday or 1pm the next day, simply because i just need the sleep. But if i have work or uni on and i have to be up by 7 or 8, my body is so tired that it is a struggle to get up. If i sleep in it means i find it difficult to go to sleep that night. Its quite weird and frustrating.

i hate sleeping past 10:00 though, even if i have nothing on. if i go out the night before, and get home around 4am, i still wake up at 8 or 9 o'clock. i feel too seedy if i sleep beyond that, and think geez, half the day has gone.

ive heard people say you dont live as long if you dont get enough sleep, hence the motive to change my sleep, plus i don't like being so damn tired when i have to wake up

I usually get around 8 hours, although I can do by with less. However, anything less than 4 hours, and I feel absolutely terrible for the rest of the day. I find it hard to sleep before midnight now, due to years of staying up late. I'd just lie in bed for hours before dropping off to sleep.

My high school maths teacher used to tell us she got by with only 3-4 hours each night, and she looked fine and healthy to me.

My body clock has completely changed. Used to be asleep by 11, up at about 5:30. Uni days have seen me not be able to get to sleep til well after 12, and struggling to get up earlier than 7, which was unheard of for me 2 years ago.

I seem to function better at night a a result, often get home from work at 11:30 and sit down for a couple of hours study before hitting the hay.

*recalls Psychology*

You could have insomnia. Everything you've described are classic insomnia symptoms. ;) I'm serious though.

I have the exact same problems. Most of the year I have stayed up til midnight doing homework (except the week before exams, because everyone told me I was looking sick and tired). No matter how late or early I go to bed, I can't seem to fall asleep til at least 12:30, and am awake at 7, and I don't think I sleep very well in that time. I blame school also, but you get used to it. Bloody annoying though. And worrying about sleep definitely makes it worse. I also find that I'm definitely a night person, which probably doesn't help my sleep habits - I can't really do homework before 7pm, and generally do best between 7pm and midnight, which are about my homework hours.

An average adult should get about 7 or 8 hours of sleep. Sabre, I'm thinking perhaps you have hypersomnia! ;) You shouldn't sleep that long every night, it could mean something is wrong. And did you know people who sleep that long are more inclined to die earlier? ;)

Also; exercise before bed is definitely a no-no.

Sleeping in until 10:00am - 11:00am is Hypersomnia? I think the condition relates to if you sleep up to 2:00pm on a constant basis. I would say that and adult had Hypersomnia if he/she were to sleep for over 12 hours on a constant basis. I slept from 12:00am 'till 10:30am on a few occasions. I certainly don't have hypersomina. ;)

How many of you sleep in when you have the chance? It's great.

My sleeping patterns are similar to sabre's. I usually get 10 hours a night and can't function properly if I have less than 7 for consecutive nights.

Even when I have nothing on the next morning, I set my alarm so that I only get 8 hours but when it wakes me up, I just end up switching it off and sleeping through for the full 10 hours and by the time I get out of bed, it's almost midday. :(

You could see it that way.
Or you could say that if you sleep too much now, you're wasting the best time in your life on sleep ;)

Apparently you need less sleep as you get older... once you're 60 and above apparently you only need 4 hours or so of sleep per night!

True. OK, so I just wanted to scare him. ;) Hypersomnia is 12 hours plus sleep regularly, but he did say 10 on a regular basis, which I still think is too much. ;)

I love my sleep 10 hours a night 6 days a week no problems.
I eat no vegtables so dieing early is somthing I expect.

That said I do weight training 3 times a week and that night I sleep like a baby. Some times up to 11 hours uninterupted sleep.
Its absolute bliss!
And yes I am a lazy uni student.
Dont go to bed before 12
Dont get up before 10 or "riki"

Prolonged sleep problems have been known to have caused sleeping walking, sleep paralysis and sleep terror disorder. I knew someone who had all three conditions. Has anyone experienced the above?

Everyone has sleep paralysis every night, when you are dreaming. ;)

I was referring to this sort:

Sleep paralysis consists of a period of inability to perform voluntary movements either at sleep onset (called hypnogogic or predormital form) or upon awakening (called hypnopompic or postdormtal form).

In Primary School and early high school i struggled to stay up past 11 pm, almost always in bed by 10 and ALWAYS up no later than 7am. I used to say anyone who slept past 7 was wasting the day. Upper School and now uni has changed this dramatically:P Never in beds before 11.30 and even then i dont sleep till bout 12-12.30. Get up at 8 for uni usually and on days off can quite easily sleep from 12.30-1 till about 12.30 till 1 the next day but this is only very RARE occasions. Never used to be able to sleep past 7am no matter what time i hit the sack, now i struggle to get UP before 7.

Alright, alright, I was just being a smart ass, stop making me look bad! :p

On weeknights, I never goto bed before 1, and aren't usually asleep before 1:30-2 Getting up at 7 is a real struggle, and it takes a lot for me to get out of bed.

On weekends it's more like 3-4am going to sleep and waking up around midday.

Whether it's healthy or not, thats another story.
