God we are slow. How the **** do we expect to keep up with running teams?

Truck
Reilly
Otten
Lyons
Tex
Thommo
M Crouch
Martin

Plus a heap of average paced players. How did it come to this? If we recruit one more slow player I will cry.

It's so hard to defend and put pressure on with slow legspeed. Essendon got so many soft goals early because we couldn't get to the contest or pressure effectively.

If Rutten and Otten are already in defence beats me how we can play Reilly. Who kicked beautifully but he can't defend. Smith can't cover for everyone.

Hartigan can come in for Rutten or Otten…this week Rutten.

Henderson for Reilly.

Brad Crouch for Danger or Douglas (whoever the most banged up).

Cameron for Martin.

Lynch (slow but elite runner) for Lyons.

Have been thinking about this, do you think it has something to do with our pre-season training as well?

We heard all pre-season about how the players were putting in 60km a week, etc. etc. but maybe we were doing the complete wrong running. This has made us be able to run marathons but what we need is that explosive speed and repeat sprints.

Of course players like Lynch, Kerridge and VB can run and run and run but you need that real explosive closing speed to rush teams.

Also think it's where our head is at as a team as well. People are already deflated and won't chase as hard.

unfortunately its very difficult to improve someones running speed. You can improve the jump off the line slightly, but top-end speed is essentially fixed.

fwiw you have to WANT to run quickly too, a lot of players with ball in hand can't concentrate on running at full tilt and working out who to kick to at the same time. It's why guys like Jetta and Dangerfield can get dumped by players who would lose by 8 lengths in a 100m sprint.

As per my post on GBU thread...we are a pretty good team....but we allow way too many easy, cheap goals by not being able to get to the contest. I pointed this out earlier in the week too. Please...some genuine foot speed to come in this week....or we'll get absolutely smashed...

Are we slow physically or slow mentally?

I personally think the bigger issue is having too many dumb footballers on our list who react slowly and make poor decisions. Thus having to play catchup as their opponent has already seen the game unfold and are physically beating our player in a footrace due to the first few steps break they get in when reacting quicker.

Isn't he supposed to be very quick?
was, pre-knee.

unfortunately his body is completely cooked. I've always felt sorry for the guy in that regard, one of our best in the guts department but Porps would probably beat him in an agility contest.

But that's what everyone posts as to a reason he should stay in the side?

It's his pace. Guess not.
To be fair his pace was ok before his knee reconstructions - so it's not exactly his fault - but he's completely lost his pace and is getting run down from behind too easily which is really a shame. If he had the pace pre-knee(s) he would probably be close to AFL standard.

haha, cant believe my luck to see another predictable thread. Havent we had this discussion already 50 times. I don't know how much faster you thought the same players had gotten since the last time we discussed this.
Can you bump the 50 threads? I couldn't find them.

you raise a good point, but at an absolute minimum it is physically if not both.

thread isn't about why are these players slow, its about why do we insist on playing them all in the same side.

you wouldn't field a team of players over 6'4" would you? But its handy to have a few.

this discussion was done to death last season in all our pre draft threads and why we shouldn't draft crouch etc. I don't think stating the same players are slow all over again really adds to anything. I don't know what you expected when we couldn't make any real changes.

I tend to agree but always think is it we are just dumb footballers, or is the coach not getting his game plan across to them (both could indicate dumb footballers).
Or is the game plan not right for dumb footballerso_O

Well don't post in it.
