Everyone again is so wise after the event

Smart is a club champion. Saying he cost us Surjan is dumb

You could say Carey or Burns or Clarke or Doughty or anyone else for that matter.

No team took Surjan in the whole draft remember incluing Port so he can't have been that flash.

Bulldust.

So by your reckoning everyone overlooked Edwards, Goodwin and Vardy in the National draft so they can't be that flash.

that's correct. At the time, that's correct.

I am saying if we had wanted Surjan we could have taken him.

I am sick of all this negative crao about the club almost always after the event.

Well my opinion in this case is not after the event. I was hoping Smart would retire at the end of last year. Once he didn't and it became apparent that we couldn't afford to have a pick in the pre-season draft because of salary cap, I even suggested that we ask our higher payed players for a small pay cut this year and we would make it up to them next year when Carey, Burns and Smart retire, so we could take Surjan in the pre-season draft. My suggestion was shot down to pieces by many for various reasons starting from "it wouldn't be fair on Parker" to "we just shouldn't backload contracts".

I don't want Smart to retire midseason. I think he deserves better and he should retire on his own terms.

I can understand a few years ago how players slipped through to rookie lists and PS drafts.
But "supposedly" today recruiting is so much more sophisticated - yet 5 games into the season players who were overlooked in the main draft, are starring in their AFL teams, and the clubs are cheekily saying how they always knew how good they were.

How can clubs recruiting still continue to get it so wrong? is beyond me.

The AFC have been getting it wrong for years, the supporters are just so used to it now:rolleyes:

OOH wouldn't be too critical, we're not too bad with 2nd round picks onwards.
Its just the first round picks we struggle with;)

Some how I think it is going to be hard for Smart to make his way back into the Crows line-up, given he wasn't picked for this big game against Port. However, knowing Nigel, he will give his all for South in the hope of being picked for AFC again. Sad that Smarty probably won't end the game on his terms.
