With Smith being selected for the trial against Fremantle, have we just got our biggest hint that Stevens might be finished?

If Ayres is so hell bent on playing "the Round 1 team" more or less, why select a rookie?

My guess is that the club is preparing for the worst with Stevo and will promote Smith back to the main list if Stevo cannot play on.

Thoughts??

I fear that you're right, as that's exactly the same thought process I went through.

I nearly gagged when I read in the 'tiser this morning that "in an inspired selection" Smith had been included in the team to play Freo?

I've read some crap in my time, but Matthew Smith an "inspired selection"???

Wouldn't mind Watts being given a run though.

Happy to give him every chance jars, particularly as I have really seen very little of him.

Got to admit though it hardly classes as an "inspired selection".

I was making more of a comment about the Tiser than Smith there.

What I can't understand is that if they have chosen Smith to play, why didn't they choose Parker instead? He's had better form out of all the rookies, especially last year.

Another one of Gary's workings which I can't comprehend.

Parker may have missed his chance with a poor trial match against Glenelg.

Also theoretically at least Smith is more versatile than Parker.

I would have thought Parker was first in line though, especially given that we have been led to believe he was talked into staying on our rookie list rather than going onto any number of clubs full lists through the draft. How much truth there was in that is hard to say.

I think you have hit the nail on the head with that one. Smith "can" play at both ends of the ground where as Parker is a defender.

It will be interesting to see who gets promoted, if anyone.

Yes, what a shame games of football aren't played in theory. Smith could be a wonderful player.........theoretically.

Wakey wakey, back to reality........he is cr@p.

If he was half a player Carlton would have picked him up. The fact they didn't want him speaks volumes.

He was given a run against a crap sanfl side, and was absolute rubbish.
I don't know if you can call Glenelg a crap side. I think Tigers will be big improvers this year. Last year they took a big step forward, this year I think they could make the finals with a bit of luck. David Noble is doing a fantastic job.

They weren't, but he was. One kick, one handball for the game.

"Inspired selection" my arse.

Is that journo a relative or something??

Wasn't yob refering to Parker's game against Glenelg??????

As I said, selecting Smith is a joke. I would have played Watts instead as Freo are playing a bunch of youngsters. I would have given Watts a full game tommorrow.

Honestly people if Smith was any good why didn't Carlton pick him up considering the fact that they were crying out for talls. He did train with them after all.

No it doesn't. the conclusion does not represent the facts.

How many players spend what 3 maybe 4 years on an AFL list, get delisted in the end, THEN get invited by another club to train with them, and eventually get redrafted.
there is obviously something about this kid, don't know if he'll make it, but there is something about him - how can you argue that point?

many, many players disappear without trace, that he hasn't speaks volumes. maybe he is a lazy **** but he can't be without some ability.

Also Carlton crying out for talls - what about us????

Well I did suggest that Smith (or Hazell) would be promoted if Stevo is done. Right after the Norwood night. Most thought I was crazy. Will be interesting to see if it happens.:D

It's not cut and dried I must admit.

If Stevo goes on the long-term injury list, and Smith's inclusion suggests that he will, then the most likely replacement would be a tall.

Andrews is not ready - nowhere near.

Dabrowski doesn't look up to it either.

Parker plays in defence - Stevo's been earmarked as a forward. Parker also played crap against Glenelg.

Smith is allegedly a forward or at least that's what he was drafted as. But I don't rate him.

Hazell is a very neat player but a small.

It's not clear cut is it?? I'd wait a few weeks and let form decide.

Strange comment to make...I thought it came across as a bit of a dig at AFC. It could be taken two ways - either the writer is trying to say "yes, finally they've woken up he's in!"...or he's not impressed, he doesnt rate him either, and he's being a smartarse. I'm leaning towards the latter, ****stirring is all your average Tiser writer is good for.

I haven't played any AFL games or won any brownlows, but I still reckon I'm good enough judge to agree with tinman that Smith is crap. Happy to be proved wrong. We are all entitled to our opinions on this board.

I'm not saying I agree or disagree with Tinman, but he is not alone in his criticism of Smith so why single him out?
Also, this whole board is made up of opinion, so why be so aggressive because someone has one that isn't the same as yours.

I think we have our answer. The same journo referred to the selection of Smith as strange in today's 'tiser - perhaps he's been reading this post and wants to clarify his position!!;)

He went on to suggest that perhaps the AFC were trying Smith out as a possibility for promotion if Stevens didn't come up.

I agree with Kane that you don't have to have played AFL footy to judge that Smith is crap.

Two eyes seems to do it for me!! :)

just a quick reaction to a bad post thats all.......but it isnt very fair to say someone on any AFL LIST is crap. l have no football skills and would love to have the talent that some of these guys do. So dont bag them because you think they are crap , because they arnt crap they are not up to the other players standard thats all

football would be great if everyone was a Mark Ricciuto or Andrew Mcleod player
